Joan Armatrading - Down To Zero Lyrics

Oh the feeling
When you're reeling
You step lightly thinking you're number one
Down to zero with a word leaving, for another one

Now you won't put you're feet back on the ground
Down to the ground down to the ground
Down to the ground down to the ground

Brand new dandy
First class scene stealer
Walks through the crowd and takes your man
Sends you rushing to the mirror
Brush your eyebrows and say
"There's more beauty in you than anyone"

Oh, remember who walked the warm sand beside you
Moored to your heel let the waves come rushing in
She took the worry from your head
But then again
She put trouble in your heart instead
And you fall
Down to the ground
Down to the ground

You'll know heartache
Still more crying when you're thinking of your mother's only son
Take to your bed
You say there's peace in sleep
But you dream of love instead
Oh, the heartache you'll find
Can bring more pain than a blistering sun

But oh when you fall
Oh when you fall
Fall at my door

Oh the feeling
When you're reeling
You step lightly thinking you're number one
Down to zero with a word
Leaving
For another one
Now you won't put you're feet back on the ground
Down to the ground down to the ground
Down to the ground down to the ground

You'll know heartache
Still more crying when you're thinking of your mother's only son
Take to your bed
You say there's peace in sleep
But you dream of love instead
But oh when you fall
Oh when you fall
Fall at my door

Listening to this song with tears streaming down. Loved playing Joan with my boyfriend. We made plans - road trip to the US, a little cottage in rural England, caring for children who need us. We were getting married in December. Then suddenly he became quiet. Weeks later,.he told me that our relationship is becoming too intense. That was it.

My best friend Kesten used to listen to Joan back in 1995, long time ago and at that time I had never paid much attention to this music. Today, about 15 minutes ago actually, I was watching 'Only Fools and Horses'(Amazing must-see UK comedy show) and at the end of the episode, Joan's song 'Someone Who Loves You' was played over the end credits. I immediately came to YouTube and found that song which in turn lead me to more! I have just been enjoying some crazy flash backs to the nineties and I have realized that I have stored way more of Joan's music in my subconscious than I thought possible! I'm so impressed! Defo gonna be sharing the good news about her to everyone I know!

  26. C.... S....

A brilliantly constructed song. I never understood why it didn't sell as well as "love and affection". Great singing , and sympathetically supported by Jerry Donahue on guitar .

  27. P.... N....

I could get lost in her hair.

  28. L.... B....

I NEVER get tired of this track. The pedal steel solo is exquisite.

  30. L.... d....

The female Hendrix. Just oozing musicianship naturally. Amazing song and her voice has something in it that flows with purity.

    L.... d....

Hardly compares to Hendrix? Odd thing to say!?! They're both of the highest quality and make amazing music but they're both of different worlds too. Just MHO, and I mean no disrespect to you at all.

  31. N.... N....

    Here Christmas day 2019 <3

  54. c.... ....

Her songs were on regular rotation when Toronto's famous CFNY was in it's heyday as one of the world's foremost innovative radio stations of the late 70's early 80's and her songs added to the mix perfectly. She had an androgynous sound back then which was sort of the trend at the time it was cool to be that way.
