JJ Cale - Artificial Paradise Lyrics

Many loves in a lifetime, they seem to go astray
Many people come and go, they never seem to stay
Sometimes I kid myself, then I realise
I'm just living in an artificial paradise

A hundred times, my hopes and dreams are blown into the air
A thousand times, it always seems no one is really there
Then I know I'm fooling myself, I'm not so wise
I'm just living in an artificial paradise

Plastic state of mind, superficial clothes
Living in a vacuum, close to zero
Sometimes I kid myself, then I realise
I'm just living in an artificial paradise

  13. s.... r....

    amazing gyrating j j u r great.

  14. O.... M....

Tip: don't pretend that you have a heart made of glass. This was J.J.'s longest guitar solo, I believe, paradoxically...

  15. B.... R....

    Artificial paradise.......

  16. S.... T....

authentic...far away from media and marketing.

  17. T.... T....

Would sound better with the percussion turned down.

    T.... T....

it is a drum machine with no variation in tone. that's why. most rock drumming is also about playing at the same volume continually, like a machine. This one sounds unusual because it is a sort of jazzy Latin American beat but programmed. Maybe an intentionally "artificial" sound to match the song's title. The blues meets zero-head-electronica.

  18. m.... b....

    from album number 10 1992

  30. R.... C....

Nice jazzy blues track. This sound is rare with him. I could see Diana Krall improvising with JJ on this one.

  31. M.... M....

Just really cool playful guitar work and he still says something real.

  32. m.... b....

  33. A.... C....

One of JJ's best imo. A masterpiece from begining to end/fade.

  34. J.... R....

For those interested in the visual used to accompany J.J. Cale's song, it too is named "Artificial Paradise" and is a work of art created by artist Freddy Flores Kristoff dated 1992.

    J.... R....

cool. inspired by the song too?

    J.... R....

And a book, Les paradis artificiels, by Théophile Gautier and Charles Beaudelaire. Just sayin'... ;)

    J.... R....

Ah...there's always a root somewhere. Mind you, Baudelaire's flowers of sickness weren't designed to have any progeny. Not my cup of tea. But, to be sure, he had his own form of blues too.

  35. m.... c....

just class a genuine artist and mentor !

    G.... F....

@Try Thinking For a change BS. JJ's in eternal bliss. And I am not "religious"; don't believe the universe and this planet were "created" in 6 days.

  43. M.... C....

The reason he's so amazing is that he's enjoying himself and playing for the love of music :)

    M.... C....

    exactly. you understand perfect

    M.... C....

@Francesco Martinengo Like the Prophets of Old Testes, telling US the truth we don't wanna face. But to Ms Mallika Chauhan's point, which is a good one since part of the human condition is "enjoying" even tragic splintered life when we are doing what we feel we were put here to do: Cale also showed his unending curiosity about things technical yet always more concerned with effects on the human condition. Here is Cale's result after touring with his wife and creative collaborators Christine Lakeland Cale and longtime road partner Tulsa drummer Jimmy Karstein test piloting in lumber camps up and down the Pacific Coast the newest Roger Linn micro-chip drum machine. This song seems to have come from those test pilot small gig tours using the Linn drum chip with a live drummer and also without. At the time as I recall Cale was also testing Ovation electro-acoustic guitars built out of material used in the AeroSpace industry and testing their acoustic properties when matched with Rosewood face and finger boards. Also playing bass via pedal while picking and singing in a chair on those small stages in bars and roadhouses up an down the coast up to Vancouver and Victoria Island BC Canada. Cale strove for human intimacy in all his recordings and here he gets as creepy as was his own curiosity about digital recording technology. I recall also Cale having a wonderful sense of the absurd about his own unbridled curiosities....

  49. F.... ....

Perhaps more than any other, this song shows how much influence JJ had on more modern artists like Mark Knopfler. Many think this is Mark playing guitar when they first hear it. Knopfler calls Cale one of the biggest influences in his musical life. His unique talent and influence will certainly be missed. RIP

    F.... ....

Exactly on point! Even Mark Knopflers vocals have a distinct similarity to JJs. Thanks!

  50. o.... ....
