Jimmy Reed - When I Woke Up This Morning Lyrics

When I woke up this mornin', I was in my bed alone
I woke up this mornin', I, I, was in my bed alone
I thought I was dreamin' but the woman I had was gone

I spent ten years in a steel mill, every cent would come home with pay
I spent ten years in the steel mill, every cent it come home with my pay
I was workin' on seven eleven an' that's when she go out an' play

I don't care about the money she spend, neither, the clothes she put on his back
I don't care about the money she would spend, neither, the clothes you put on his back
Yeah, but things from seven eleven, he was laid up in my shack

When I played with Detroit Junior, every once in a while he would just turn to the band and yell out, "Jimmy Reed!" What more needed to be said.

JR is the greatest blues singer. He never got the credit he deserved for the great songs he wrote and sang. I grew up listening to his music.

    S.... L....

And many of his earlier hit blues songs are not just the standard blues structurally either. However, after the success of "Baby What You Want Me To Do", he did pretty much fall into a formula.

    M.... D....

Standard twelve bar blues. But nobody did it better then JR. It's so funky with like.. a jump feel to it.

    M.... D....

Aye , what this fella said

Easy rockin' blues is what it is to me, and I love it. It is a special form or Chicago blues (by way of Mississippi). I much prefer it over "city blues" - where the singer stands up and sings a phrase, and then answers with a phrase of single notes on the guitar. "City blues" to me means no harmonica, and usually brass (horns) and a small sort of swing band backing up the singer/guitarist. Except for BB, & Freddie King - that form rarely sounds authentic to me. A lot of guitar player/singers of that sort of city blues just sound like they are masterbating their egos.

You just can't go wrong with Jimmy Reed.

  21. s.... ....

THIS......is the way the blues was meant to be.

  22. d.... ....

Keith Richards is right. Jimmy Reed does the laziest, most brilliant turnarounds. Can you hear how on the turnaround the bass remains on the IV, when it 'should' be on the V, then settles into the proper IV on its way back to the I? It's part of JR's sound, along with his special, consistently slightly out-of-tune tuning.

    d.... ....

"Nicely out of tune." John Lee Hooker, however, was a much more extreme example of blues eccentricity - sometimes staying on the tonic chord no matter what change anyone playing with him expected.

    d.... ....

What bull. LISTEN!!!! That is the sound of harmony. Eddie Taylor, Jimmy Reed. Harmony. Consistently out of tune? Are you people out of your minds? It's the tape speed. Jimmy slept in tune for Christs sake. His harp was out of tune? I could go on. That you need a pud like Keith Richards to legitimize a genius like Jimmy Reed is pathetic. Are we clear on this, or do you want me to paint a picture?

  23. G.... P....

This is my kinda blues...thanks for posting these great songs.
