Jimmy Buffett - We Are The People Our Parents Warned Us About Lyrics
I was supposed to have been a Jesuit priest or a Naval Academy grad
That was the way that my parents perceived me
Those were the plans that they had
Though I couldn't fit the part too dumb or too smart
Ain't it funny how we all turned out
You know I could have worked the rigs when the money was big
Or hopped a freighter south to Trinidad
And when they tried to draft me I earned a college degree
Buyin' time till things were not so bad
But when I got a guitar found a job in a bar, playin' acid rock til I was numb
Tell me where are the flashbacks they all warned us would come.
We are the people they couldn't figure out
We are the people our parents warned us about
Hey hey, Gardner McKay, take us on the leaky Tiki with you
Clear skies bound for Shanghai, sailin' on the ocean blue
Now I got quarters in my loafers tryin' to fight inflation
When it only used to take a cent
Sometimes I wish I was back in my crashpad days before I knew what cash flow meant
Seems everybody's joggin' or heavy into health shit
Don't tell me that I ought to get rolffed
'Cause I love cajun martinis and playin' afternoon golf
We are the people there isn't any doubt
We are the people they still can't figure out
We are the people who love to sing "Twist and Shout"
(Shake it up, Baby now)
We are the people our parents warned us about.

Jimmy Buffett We Are The People Our Parents Warned Us About Comments
We are the people I warned my parents about.
Buffett was a Catholic?? No wonder I can relate to him. Catholic school and all. Funny thing is that I moved to Southern California and almost all my female friends are Catholic school grads. Cracks me up. We are like people in the program who can spot each other a mile away!
Sometimes I wish I was back in my crash pad days before I knew what Cash flow meant.
Bring it back!
I collect Gold Dollars and burn my homework, I know I’m crazy!!!

Story of my life
Growing up with a sailor for a dad I ended up being the person my mother warned me about; however, I'm exactly the person my dad told me to be :) I'll take it ;)
Jimmy Buffett is an inspiration to me
Just got my first real job out of college and my folks lectured me on saving for retirement. All I could think about was "don't tell me that I outta get a Roth!"
I looked in the mirror today and saw one of those people my parents warned me about.
Now I've got Sacagawea dollars in my loafers.
Thanks Jimmy love you and your music. Hoping to get to Florida to come to one of you hotels. Please bring your music and way of life up to Toronto.
I used to sing along to this as a little kid now I'm 24 and thinking fuck I'm the guy my dad tried to warn me about ;)
Lets hang out :D
Back in 1987, I was a Heavy Assault Helicopter Pilot with a Special Operations Capable Marine Amphibious Unit in the Mediterranean off the coast of Lebanon. A friend sent me a large bumper sticker. It read “I’m the person your parents warned you about”. I stuck it to the inside of my side window in the cockpit. The young Marines could see it when they boarded. It got more than a few stares as I always gave them my most maniacal grin.
Welcome to the club brother!
I'm in Myrtle Beach SC if you wanna party down
Self explanatory re: Catholics and school! Re: Nam, flashbacks...just listen!

I'm doing my best to be one of "the people our parents warned us about," I might not be doing such a good job of it ... but I've got a thirty-foot "yacht" and I'm [planning on pushing my boundaries for "sailing away" this year. Hope you'll wish me luck!
We are the people our patents warned us about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Proud to be a part of the Jimmy Buffet Crew
if you actaually were, you would call yourself a PARROT HEAD
More like a cool, chilling party Pirate Parrot Head
Yes, I was a going to say, a proud Parrothead who needs to remember "Buffett" has two t's. I read somewhere someone asked him long ago, "Hey Jimmy, where's the food?" and he replied like "No food, it's just me." (But can you image a Parrotheads party with no food?)
First time I heard this was before it was finished. He only played the first 30 seconds or so. Told us not to record it cos it wasn't copyrighted yet.
we cant here in Saratoga ny that's why buffett wont vome to the capital region cause he wants people to tailgate but were not allowed, ive been to 2 toby keith concerts and a zac brown, I hate rap except for colt ford
So true, my 90 year old dad is a huge fan, as are my tean age kids!
Thank you! Enjoy the show... whis I could go...
Great video collage. The ones I put together do not compare to yours. Heading off to Vegas for Buffett this weekend, and well, let's just say the video is a great way to start the weekend. Fins up!
I started listening to jimmy when I was 8 im 17 now only time I listened to rap is when I was on my cruise from the 24th - today im home now
sad to say but democracies and republics eventually fall. but tag lasts forever. (music not so much but those childhood games, i think they are entwined in the DNA)
Pleased to announce the publishing of my father, Gardner McKay's memoir with a beautiful foreword by Jimmy Buffett. Go to gardnermckay(dot)net and click on Journey Without A Map. Adventurers, enjoy!
amen ,country and jimmy buffet forever
Love this song, not my total Buffett fav - I'm an old soul & love Tin Cup Chalice...but the beauty of it all is that a throw-away song by Jimmy is so way much better than the sh!t being made today...I love The Who but I'll be a ParrotHead forever....
My Dad's fave was 'God's Own Drunk". Another RIP.
Have to agree . What a way to live . Buffett has got me through some hard times. His music always brighten the day . Parrot Heads Rule
