Jimmy Buffett - Southern Cross Lyrics

Got out of town on a boat goin' to southern islands.
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea.
She was makin' for the trades on the outside,
And the downhill run to Papeete Bay.

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas.
We got eighty feet of the waterline.
Nicely making way.
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you.
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away.

Think about how many times I have fallen,
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
Lookin' for that woman, girl,
Who knows love can endure.
And you know it will. And you know it will.

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time,
You understand now why you came this way.
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small.
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day.

So I'm sailing for tomorrow, my dreams are a dyin'.
And my love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain.
I have my ship and all her flags are a flyin'
She is all that I have left and music is her name.

Think about how many times I have fallen,
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
Lookin' for that woman, girl,
Who knows love can endure.
And you know it will. And you know it will.

So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do.
You will survive being bested.
But somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you.
At the Southern Cross.

Great sound quality for being amateur video. Nice job

  16. wheelinthesky300

If CSN had not originated this,
would have made a great Buffett song.
    Perfect for Jimmy.

I used to live in the Florida Keys. One night I stopped at this little roadside beach just to enjoy the quiet night and have a snack. I looked at the stars, and they weren't familiar at all - one constellation in particular stood out to me; it looked like a cross leaning on it's side. The next night after work I went to my local hang-out bar for a drink, and to hear this one local musician friend of mine play. Well, I told him, "I saw the strangest group of stars last night; I've never seen any of them before - one looked kind of like a cross that was kind of tipped over". My musician friend replies, "yeah, that's the Southern Cross"! I couldn't believe it - I'd long heard of it, but never thought I'd actually see it. When he took the stage, my musician friend says, "this song is for Hannah; it's called 'Southern Cross' by CSN". Afterward I told him I was in shock after hearing the lyrics - which described my personal situation as if the song were written about me. He dedicated 'Southern Cross' to me every single night after that for years and years! What a great memory...

  27. Michael Ramey

I know it's CS&N song, but when Jimmy says 'we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do,' it just rings truer. Best lyrics ever.

  28. Christopher Perry

    #7, she was.

  29. Christopher Perry

I’m gonna killem, you can smoke them out.

  30. Gabor Vargo

Jimmy and the Coral Reefers. Good Stuff. Was privileged to know Tim Krekel, a gifted Coral Reefer from Louisville. Had the good fortune to have been his dentist for a short while before he left us for that great big beach.

  31. 5litergt

Didn’t care for the original but this is smooth!

  32. Upper Left Coast Chelsea Fan

I love it when Jimmy does covers. I think he picks really excellent songs and does them justice. Classic CSN and Brown-Eyed Girl, Uncle John's Band, Mexico and god damn it even Neil Diamond! WWJBD (next)?

  33. james moad

Pretty tough version of this song

  34. kath nh

He actually sings this better than CSN! And he sang it at all the concerts I saw, which was six or seven. He was smart, as he was getting older, he could tell his voice was failing, and for the first time in his life, he took voice lessons. The difference was amazing. That was after this concert, though. His energy was absolutely amazing at his concerts and they were long! And he never drank anything but water at them. Some Parrotheads, like my husband and I, don't even drink but man we had a ball at those concerts!

  35. Peter

I like Crosby stills and Nash better but Jimmy Buffet is good

  36. SuperGaleford

This song was made for Jimmy...BUT this could have been better.

    I love everything about this.

  44. the boss

  45. Alan Sikes

Sorry, not quite as good as original with the gorgeous CSN harmonies... But still damn good!! I love this song!!

  46. Alex Dubler

The bass line is a Jimmy Buffett "trademark"... gives the song more groove and punch than the original version!!!

  47. Emma Collier

Was on a bridge fishing in the keys. An old salt asked if I was on vacation. I said “yes Sir, since Sunday, how about you?” He said “yep, since 1986” That was in 2014. His radio was playing this song at the time. I will never forget the day.

  48. 5959785

    Where is this?

  49. Kathy Carr

I was feeling really down about some ugly family issues. Almost in tears. So I thought about it - haven’t listened to Jimmy in a long while. So I put his music on and damned in I wasn’t smiling and dancing a bit!

  68. Fred Moore

Stills wrote it. First time I've heard Buffet do it. Nice.

  69. Roger H Werner

I love the CSN version but damn, this version is really great! A very funky beat with wonderful harmonica riffs that sound perfect.... What's more, I love watching a band and audience obviously having a ball! For those who feel this version is a disservice to the CSN original listen to the lead guitar: The guiitar riffs sound an awful lot like Steven Stills' custom Gibson guitar that gives the original song its distinctive tone (as it does on virtually every Stills song). Rather than complain and criticize, please simply enjoy!

  70. mrlair

  73. April W.

    Love Jimmy Buffet 🌴

  74. C.W. Nardone

Jimmy takes this already AMAZING song and brings a whole new life and energy to it. When I think of JB I don’t think of a serious musician but the truth is he has an incredible ability to transfer emotion from stage to audience. And that talent transcends any preconceived notion‘s one might have for Jimmy Buffett. If you are able to do something that makes other people feel so good, you must be doing something right. And if you can’t feel the power of this song, you must be doing something wrong.

  75. stephen brandel

Now i really need my B3 hammond
