Jimmy Buffett - Savannah Fare You Well Lyrics
There is something in the wind tonight
Some kind of change of weather
Somewhere some devil's mixing fire and ice together
I got a feeling that the dark side of the moon is one the rise
Black as a crow's feather
I could stay another day or two
But what's the use of stalling
Deep in the winter even holdout leaves start fallin'
Lately every night above the declarations of our love
I hear the road callin'
It's such a fragile magic
A puff of wind can break the spell
And all the golden threads are frail as spider webs
Savannah fare you well
In a vision I had yesterday
It rained so hard that I drowned
While I waited for a hurricane to die down
The raging water rolling over me was wild as a heart
That love cannot tie down
It's such a fragile magic
A puff of wind can break the spell
And all the golden threads are frail as spider webs
Savannah fare you well

Jimmy Buffett Savannah Fare You Well Comments
It kills me that this only has 313 likes. such a beautiful song. I'm named after his daughter
the first time i heard this song i was taking a humongous poop in Savannah Ga. Its been my favorite ever since. GO JIMMYYYYYYY
Actually, contrary to pop belief, this song is about his daughter. Savannah Jane Buffett had graduated college and it a farewell song to her.
hahahaha no its not listen to the words
Recalled this song after driving through a truly epic New Mexico thunderstorm. Beauty imagery in the lyrics.
How does this formulaic, pop singer convince those parrot heads to keep spending their hard earned cash on his over-exposed product? The Barnum Bailey of 21st century marketing.
You just don’t get what a lot of his songs have gotten people through.. music is about relating. A lot of jimmy songs kept me and lots of others sane. You just don’t get it and you never will.
@Brody Brady How the fuck do you know ? Jimmy and his fucking songs suck huge cock
This is the best song on the CD, LP.
I grew up listening to jimmy buffett because of my dad.. he actually named me after Savannah Jane. This will be my funeral song
wonder how many beautifully named Savannah Janes have this story..my grandgirl is one....I love this song...
need a hammock...
Needed to hear this this morning.........
one of his hauntingly beautiful song
Haunted melody. Nice
Like the way we lived in the Northern Cape.
Enjoy the lyrics an music. Love it!
i absolutely love the term, "fragile magic", it's implications are limitless. A fragile magic from each atom, ion, cell, to solar system, to galaxy, brick, mortar, and man, international relations. What a fragile magic all life and existence truly is.
Jimmy my man I just love this song . Out of all your songs this one is my number one . I Love All Your Music .
its about the place not his daughter..
went to a wedding in sav, pirate ship was there and we rode around in horse and buggies, great visit, bid wedding at the Methodist Church.
I think this song has little to do with the town of Savanna. I think the song is much more metaphorical in nature. To me its about a stormy relationship. Rained so hard that I drown(tears) "Puff of wind can break the spell" (one little thing can turn into a fight) "While I waited for the storm to die down (big fight with wife/girlfriend). "Mixing fire and Ice together" (hot....cold....relationship).....etc. Would love to have the opportunity to discuss the meaning with Jimmy. Like to think I'm not that far off.
The song was written by Hugh Prestwood. You could email him and ask... or maybe google for an interview with him. He seems like a really nice guy. I haven't looked for him for a few years, hope he's still with us.
Well, let's just say that we liked both of his daughter' s names so much that we now have a Savanna Delaney and she is our little Miss Magic.
I have a Savannah as well, born on June 1st like Savannah Jane
thats fucked up man
I'm named after his daughter too!
Agree, one of his best. Something strongly emotive about his voice.
Beautiful steel guitar!!! Jimmy Buffett sounds so much better with a steel guitar!
Rocky N , you are so right, the steel guitar in this is absolutely magical!!! Saw Pure Prairie League a couple of weeks ago. The steel guitar in their music was fabulous!
omg this song was so important to me it made me cry. especially since my dad used to sing it to me when i was little. such a sweet song. X3
1littlent love this comment (:
You're correct, it's about Savannah, GA
tom jernigan it’s about his daughter savannah lol
@Brody Brady NOOOOOO its not
Nope, written by Hugh Prestwood...it's about Savannah, GA not Bubba's daughter
FYI - I'm surprised how so many folks have this wrong.
Hugh Prestwood (a friend) is the songwriter, and it is indeed about my home town Savannah, GA...not Savannah Jane
I visited Hugh at his home in 2003 when he played the song (his original demo) for me from his board...I got choked up...Hugh burned me a CD of the demo
Hugh had never been to Savannah when he wrote the song
It took Hugh a week to teach Bubba the song
The vocals were recorded in an Airstream trailer at East Hampton airport
Hi Tom! Can you guess who I am? ;) Not surprised to find your comment here, 4 years later...
Thank you MisterLewis! When I first read your comment "GA* ;)" I thought to myself, "What? What kind of reply is that and what does he mean?" Then I re-read my comment and BING!, the light went on. Yes, my geography is much better than one would think and yes Savannah is in Georgia. When I posted this comment about Savannah, the song, the city...whatever, for some reason I had Charleston on my mind. Not the one in West Virginia mind you, but the one in South Carolina. :-) Thank you!
When one says, Savannah, Christmas, Texas, or any other noun of your choosing, followed by fare you well, you are wishing the one to whom you are speaking that that noun you are using is kind to them. Savannah in this song could be the city in SC or the name of a hurricane and he's wishing that you fare well in the storm. Wikipedia sugguest that the song writer, Hugh Prestwood writes of a hurricane in which the songwriter is killed by the storm...missing sailor or driver on the road - you pick.
I love Savannah, great city, great people, great bars... love to think of this song and think of the city...
@doublec9697 Its Jimmy Buffett, it doesn't really need to be about anything. Many of his songs are best if you take your own meaning from them.
it is pretty perty. lol
this is such a special song. our savannah died last year, at 14 years old. if ever i find the courage to spread her ashes this is one of the songs we will play.
One of Buffett's Top 10 songs if you ask me.
Savannah is his daughter.
