Jimmy Buffett - A Pirate Looks At Forty Lyrics
Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters
Since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all
Switch from sails to steam
And in your belly you hold the treasure
That few have ever seen, most of them dreams
Most of them dreams
Yes, I am a pirate two hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late
I've run my share of grass
I made enough money to buy Miami
But I pissed it away so fast
Never meant to last, never meant to last
I have been drunk now for over two weeks
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks
But I've got to stop wishin'
Got to go fishin', I'm down to rock bottom again
Just a few friends, just a few friends
[Instrumental]
I go for younger women, lived with several awhile
And though I ran away, they'll come back one day
And still could manage a smile
It just takes awhile, just takes awhile
Mother, mother ocean, after all these years I've found
My occupational hazard being my occupation's just not around
I feel like I've drowned
Gonna head uptown

This is the best Buffet song change my mind. Piano Man wishes it could make me as sad as this song does.
I love every single verse in this song. I swear he was singing about my life
Being a longtime surfnutter I knew a version of this song as performed by Jack Johnson, who's into surfing, too. When it goes "And in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen" I always thought he mend 'barreling waves'. And thought the lyrics were 'most of them are dreams'. Most barrels áre dreams. Some are dangerous nightmares. Great song, thanks for posting!
The movie beach Bum brought me here with. Matthew McConaughey
Margarita contry

It has made my life so much more than I ever imagined. You are drawn to to it and your life takes on a whole new meaning. I know that my life is like a book that you can't put down because of it.

sorry for your loss, Brad.
Made enough money to buy Miami but I pissed it away so fast
Thank God we (artist and audience) have been granted the opportunity to grow old(er) and hear this music for many years. Long live the music of our era, the world is still in love with it. 59 yrs old and still listening to music from those magic years. Would love to see this kind of music being created again before I die. It never, EVER, gets old, and it’s not going to die anytime soon. You can still hear it....EVERYWHERE! In commercials, movies, shows, etc. It’s still very much alive. I hope I fade before it does. Been loving it since around 1968. Nostalgia is bittersweet.
PARROT HEADS UNITE!!
yes they do
I sometimes think myself a poet, yet no way. This song is absolute mastery, at least as good as Shakespeare but to me far better. This and Southern Cross and but a few others should have some kind of hall of fame, and I am qualified to make this personal judgement.
The ultimate if i could go back in time song! This one and down to the banana republics
Anyone from “Beach Bum” here
Hunter Reese Yep butiful
hell yes bought it
You know how these songs mean more & more the older you get
great music for around the pool
Yes I am a pimp. 40 years too late...

It was and is a song that my father loves i am 32 now but as a younggin i didn't want to hear this stuff! But from 17 and on wow has that changed i absolutely love it and we enjoy it together every now and then over a beer. yes there were times when I was a victim, of fate, and my own stupidity. But I do go fishing, and when I am down to "rock bottom", the Maker rescues me thru amazing grace. May all of you know the Ocean as I have.
so many liars and delusions of grandeur in these comments
I quit my job at 40...left Europe for Mexico...was supposed to be a short vacation but never went back home! I've turned 60 and first heard this song few month ago covered by Jack Johnson...the story of us pirates! Bless you Jimmy!
Pietro Malinverni your a liar
Fe33:$/ x. Brad
I work for the main stream media - this is my song. Fits me perfectly. 10-20 years ago I would have been able to spread my lies for 500k a year. Now no jobs can be found and i have been drunk now since Nov 7th 2016...
Trump Derangment Syndrome is a bitch. All you Liberals are so fucking miserable.
As a 15 year old his songs make me feel like I’m missing something that I don’t know I’m missing. The meaning and impact makes me feel so at peace and I cry every time I listen to his songs alone. There is just so much energy and belief in his words and stories. I want to die listening to his songs while sitting at in the sand at a beach.
Chris Marston
This song made me feel that way when I was 15 too. Now I am actually looking at 40 and it hits even harder. I hope you do lots of amazing things in your life.
I liked this song until I turned 40. It is sublime now.
Miss the sea..
I made enough money to buy Miami but pissed it away so fast
The Beach Bum
This song and Leon Russel's "Back to the Island" are the best boat songs ever....Maybe throw in "The Southern Cross" CSN for good measure.
