Jim James - Candyman Lyrics
Come on all you pretty women, with your hair a hanging down
Open up your windows cause the candymans in town
Come on boys and gamble, roll those laughing bones
Seven come eleven, boys Ill take your money home
Here he comes and hes gone again
Pretty lady ain't got no friend till
The candyman comes around again, around again
I come from Memphis where I learned to talk the jive
When I get back to Memphis be one less man alive
Good morning Mr. Benson, I see you're doing well
If I had me a shotgun Id blow you straight to hell
Look out, look out the candyman
Pretty lady ain't got no friend till
The candyman comes around again, around again
Come on boys and wager if you have got the mind
If you've got a dollar boys, lay it on the line
Hand me my old guitar, pass the whiskey round
Won't you tell everybody you meet that the candymans in town
Look out, look out the candyman
Here he comes and hes gone again
Pretty lady ain't got no friend till
The candyman comes around again, around again

Jim James Candyman Comments
Blasphemy to say that this is better than the original?
It is Hands Down Much better than the Deads version, Sorry Slick. If you don't think so you probably aren't a musician and just a listener.
This is just so beautiful ❤️
just makes me wanna munch some acid. fried unit! rowdy east coast head!
Great cover. Jim James is an amazing singer.
Check out channel I do covers of Grateful Dead and similar music.
Absolute genius. Only Jim James could hit it right on the nose !
awesome cover! ♡
i love this, so good as well as the original.
BETTER than the G.D. version hands down. Much more melodically flowing with better guitar riffing too.
Constitution_89 oh yes it's fantastic- but check yourself-Better than The Grateful Dead?????????????????????????????????
@slim jim Infinitely better than the Dead's version in my humble opinion.
Very faithful cover of one of the Dead's most overlooked songs. Doesn't really break any new ground but I'm glad somebody decided to include this tune.
Yep, sounds like Jim James covering the Grateful Dead. In my opinion most of these covers on this album sound better than the Dead And Co. thats coming from a guy that has 87 Dead shows (with Jerry) under his belt. Dead and Co.? I meant John Mayer and Co. The National does a great job on Morning Dew as well.
This cover slips into the first place, sweet spot for the most all natural, sugar cane goodness version of Candyman I've had the pleasure of sipping up with my ears.
wow...this cover is amazing!
I feel conflicted. I like a lot of these covers so far, but I'm also starkly impressed by how few of them are able to really stand next to the originals. this one in particular, is so lacking in swagger compared to the orig. it just doesn't quiiiiite swing enough. it's a loving tribute though.
It's good and faithful but a straight up cover when I think most people were looking for a reinterpretation like what The National did with Morning Dew.
It's a good cover, I suppose, in a tribute sense. But isn't it a bit too much like the original? Don't get me wrong, I like this version as well as the original, but I think cover versions are much more interesting if they have more novelty. Perhaps it's just a very personal tribute to Jerry from Jim, though (and hence the "imitation").
Looking forward to the Day of the Dead LP! Most songs on it have been surprisingly good.
Yeah, I thought the same thing. It's a great sound but it sounds like the studio album, which was never the best of the GD. Still, this is a studio album, I guess...
Nostalgia, but I simply like that it sounds like Jerry.
Right up there w the excellent cover they did of The Bands - It Makes No Difference
+B Hamilton This is a good cover of a favorite GD studio recording. MMJ's take on "It Makes No Difference" is a fantastic cover, one of if not my favorite on that tribute album.
Oh sweet nuthin' is another killer
BW shoulda gotten JJ to tour instead of JM, at least for the singin'
I'm getting a Porno for Pyros / Roy Orbison feel.. Also getting some John Lennon too. Very chill track and it gets my nod.
oh, yes ♡
The vocals are stellar, but the accompaniment is all too "straight". It sounds very 4/4, which is IMO a bit of a disservice to Jerry and the boys.
+Kelly Cox to my ears it seems very similar to the way the song is played on the album, with a big country shuffle beat. Plus there's a nice swing to their shuffle. True, it sounds quite different from live versions. But most of The National's accompaniments have been true to the album versions (listen to their Terrapin, e.g.). I do love that heavy fuzz guitar solo
+Kelly Cox disservice? it's a band's rendition of a classic, not a carbon copy
@Desert Lake Striper Yes, I understand, but if someone covered a Louis Armstrong song in straight 4/4 without any swing, it would be inferior, don't you think?
Yeah, it's a bit squeaky clean, but my singing voice isn't as good so I think they've done a good job.
fucking stellar!!!! this would make Jerry smile for sure...
Only Jim can channel someone so gracefully, his cadence is so Jerry-like. Still infused with my favorite elements of a Jim cover... brilliant tribute.
what is scary is he DOES sound alot like Jerry sometimes lol.
Sometimes you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right. ;)
this is amazing
Thank you Jim.
