Jim Croce - Workin' At The Car Wash Blues Lyrics

Well, I had just got out from the county prison
Doin ninety days for non-support
Tried to find me an executive position
But no matter how smooth I talked
They wouldnt listen to the fact that I was a genius
The man say, we got all that we can use.
Now i got them steadily depressin, low down mind messin
Working at the car wash blues

Well, I should be sittin in an air conditioned office in a swivel chair
Talkin some trash to the secretaries
Sayin, here, now mama, come on over here.
Instead, Im stuck here rubbin these fenders with a rag
And walkin home in soggy old shoes
With them steadily depressin, low down mind messin
Workin at the car wash blues

You know a man of my ability
He should be smokin on a big cigar
But till I get myself straight I guess Ill just have to wait
In my rubber suit a-rubbin these cars

Well, all I can do is a shake my head
You might not believe that its true
For workin at this end of niagara falls
Is an undiscovered howard hughes
So baby, dont expect to see me
With no double martini in any high-brow society news
Cause I got them steadily depressin, low down mind messin
Workin at the car wash blues
So baby, dont expect to see me
With no double martini in any high-brow society news
Cause I got them steadily depressin, low down mind messin
Workin at the car wash blues
Yeah I got them steadily depressin, low down mind messin
Workin at the car wash blues

I know where the building is that held that carwash on Portage Road Niagara Fall's N.Y., I was about 9 year's old 1964 riding my 20" Stinray home from down the trails in the Niagara Gorge, riding passed the car wash and Jim was sitting on a chair playing guitar and singing and getting up, putting his guitar on chair to wipe water off the car pulling out of the car wash. I spun my bike around to turn back to listen to him. RIP Jim.

    O.... A....

    "smoove" I'd talk ;)

    Just perfect Jim!

I play his music to cheer me up every time I hear my asshole boss gripe at me over irrelevant things

  13. J.... W....

Croce grew up in suburban Philadelphia...Upper Darby to be exact. Where does he get that Alabama accent?

    J.... W....

workin at the car wash blues.

    J.... W....

Its more a street accent but he did have a tie to the south creatively probably from his draft time in Ft.. Jackson.

  14. G.... ....

Hard to believe he would be 72 now. Every time I play my CDs it hits me again what we lost. The songs he never had  a chance to write and sing.

    G.... ....

I always wonder the same thing.

    G.... ....

Yes. Same as Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens...a lot of lost talent...

  15. M.... ....

man great tunes back in the day. could somebody go back in time and learn this lost art.

  16. G.... B....

ur gonna have to arrest me cuz i raped that replay button like a check fraud celled with a serial killer;D

    G.... B....

    Grant there's a song in there :)
