Jethro Tull - Wind-Up Lyrics

When I was young
And they packed me off to school
And they taught me how not to play the game
I didn't mind
If they groomed me for success
Or if they said that I was just a fool

So, I left there in the morning
With their God tucked underneath my arm
Their half-assed smiles and the book of rules

And I asked this God a question
And by way of firm reply
He said, "I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays."

So told my old headmaster
And to anyone who cares,
"Before I'm through I'd like to say my prayers."

I don't believe you:
You had the whole damn thing all wrong
He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays

Well, you can excommunicate me
On my way to Sunday school
And have all the bishops harmonize these lines

How'd you dare tell me
That I'm my Father's son
When that was just an accident of birth

I'd rather look around me
Compose a better song
'Cause that's the honest measure of my worth

In your pomp and all your glory
You're a poorer man than me
As you lick the boots of death born out of fear

When I was young
And they packed me off to school
And they taught me how not to play the game
I didn't mind
If they groomed me for success
Or if they said that I was just a fool

I left there in the morning
With God under my arm
Their half-assed smiles and the book of rules

Well, you can excommunicate me
On my way to Sunday school
Have all the bishops harmonize these lines

When I was young
And they packed me off to school
And they taught me how not to play the game
I didn't mind
If they groomed me for success
Or if they said that I was just a fool

So, I told my old headmaster
And to anyone who cares,
"Before I'm through I'd like to say my prayers."

Well, you can excommunicate me
On my way to Sunday school
And have all the bishops harmonize these lines

I don't believe you:
You had the whole damn thing all wrong
He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays

Great Album ...my favorite song on the album , (WindUp). Alot of inside meaning to me, but no all tracks here are great. The one before it also ( Benifit) also another great one

  9. C.... W....

He says “I’m not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays”

Our singer, after struggling with his faith, calmly realizes “He’s not the kind you have wind up on Sundays”

  10. A.... R....

Seen this show at Detroit's East town 1971.always be one of my fev's

I was in the process of quitting the Catholic Church when this song came out on the Aqualung album. I could relate very much to this album as I was growing into spirituality from being in a religion at that time.

  15. r.... ....

And they taught me how not to play the game...

  16. C.... J....

How come whenever looking up specific song by group or artist, you always find, they always display every single song under the sun of theirs, accept the specific one you're trying to locate...ugg!

    C.... J....

I agree, but that is YouTube! I am now listening to " Wind Up ". I am so happy to hear it. But me must defeat the machine, anyway. It has no right to tell me
what I am really after, when it comes to a certain song! How can defeat be done?

    C.... J....

@Anne P I totally agree with you...machines, algerythms, will never know man...(or however spelled), that's googles failing...like the movie the 'Matrix'...
    Be well...

  17. j.... f....

Deep song--God is not a toy to be winded up on Sundays..Hes always with you every day

  18. C.... E....

I listened to this after praying a rosary and attending a vocations meeting where our bishop of the Catholic church was talking and when he was talking about a lacisted priest who was in a monastery this song was going through my head. When he was answering questions about the lacisted priest who was in a monastery all could think of was "all the bishops harmonize these lines"!

  19. M.... S....

A good song from jethro tulls best album all time....!

  20. M.... S....

Oh this is so profound. The headmasters at the private college in MI where I graduated were full of themselves. I lived this!

I don't believe you. You had the whole damm thing all wrong. He's not the type you have to wind up on Sundays.

  21. s.... f....

    1!LOVE JETHRO TU+LL AND these......

  22. J.... W....

The second time I saw them they were touring behind this album and they did it straight through in order. It was fantastic . Seen them 11x from 1970-2016. My favorite album is still "Stand Up ",but this isn't far behind.

  23. T.... R....

I miss old classic progressive rock, new music these days is just terrible....I remember biking in Hilton Head on the beach once during a professional conference, all I could hear was this song in my head!

  24. T.... R....

CAN I HIT LOVE A FEW MORE TIMES MORE???

  25. A.... N....

The album artwork is telling. "How'd you dare to tell me that I'm my father's son?" There's a dog with him while he's on the curb. THEN he's hiding something in his coat. THEN there's a feast inside. Where's the dog? They weren't going to tell him who he was/is UNTIL he sinned. PIGS! His father couldn't keep his pants on. He was born amidst less than desirable. Love, Friends.

  26. A.... t....

  35. A.... D....

Aqualung when referenced as a concept album or not ..is one of the best musical achievements of its time. From the albums art work to the musical arrangements including the order presented and of course Ian’s lyrics are absolutely classic .

    A.... D....

I have no idea what you were talking about in your other comments (or who was talking about pulling the video), but I've removed them. Play nice.

    A.... D....

    its called tyranny asshole

  36. T.... R....

I am disappointed at the concert versions, I think he was on drugs at that time...this is one of the most masterful pieces that Ian Anderson made!

  47. M.... B....

As someone brought up in the catholic faith with a devout family, this song means the world to me. I'm much younger than this album, but it spoke to me as teen. Its truly a timeless song and message. The impact will always live with me, and I thank Jethro Tull for that. Rather be a wise seeking young man than a blind old man.

    M.... B....

exactly! taught me there was a place called "outside the box"

  60. G.... B....

    WHAT A SONG.

  61. J.... G....

THIS song, in it's total conception...say's it all...for MANY of us.

  62. P.... P....

It's not just about thhe Church of England. I was born a Catholic, and i totally relate to the lyrics. I've known so many so-called " good catholic " taht wound up their God on Sundays and then forgot about christianism the rest of the week

  63. t.... s....

Reminds me of the 8-track days with the Craig Power Play car stereo that lit up when you got into high wattage. Vintage stereos were great if you set them up right. Change tracks at a click.

  64. J.... G....

It put's the perspective of that which is God...is w/in us all, at all times...underneath our arm's...everywhere. NO matter WHO or WHAT say's otherwise! THUS..IT is MY God I carry w/me!

  70. w.... r....

Ian Anderson has it right with this one. God and religion are not the same.

  71. R.... S....

My bad! I truly thought that they were inducted 30 years ago. They should be there!

  72. r.... s....

    S.P.E.L.L.I.N.G....D.O.G....backwards?

  73. R.... S....

    Martin Barre at his best!!!!

  74. R.... S....

This song has an appropriate title. If the tempo doesn't get you rocking, nothing can. And the lyrics are killer!

  75. j.... M....

Beautiful. It’s our dynamic interface with life. We see it as we age. Hindsight...you know the rest.

  76. m.... ....

Go home Ian. Find something better to bitch about.

    m.... ....

What are you so salty about?

  77. m.... ....

So self absorbed in his own perceived importance that I entranced

  78. r.... s....

JETHRO TULL IS NOT IN HALL OF FAME?

    r.... s....

randall scott burress No, not in HOF. They don't like "progrock". Ridiculous

    r.... s....

    ignorance is SAD..

    r.... s....

    IT'S A CRIME!1

    r.... s....

    that BLOWS !!!!

  79. b.... ....

    fuck yea

  80. D.... M....

Last song of the album and by far the best...

    D.... M....

Martin's guitar really "winds up" and launches into a great and memorable solo. What else separated Wind Up from the rest of the album were the powerful lyrics and the way they helped smash a real societal problem at the time.

    D.... M....

Martin really cooks on this one, just wish there was another verse, so he could cook even more.

    D.... M....

@Arya Faeqy Aqualung and Locomotive Breath are great songs as well. Both were regularly in the encores in Tull's concerts.

Absolutely agree with the description provided above...

  85. A.... S....

...they taught me how NOT to play the game. Amen!

    A.... S....

    you're not the only one

  86. J.... H....

The first time I heard Tull was in army barracks in Budingen Germany in 1969. The song was Bouree and from that moment I was hooked. Sad that Ian Anderson has lost that fantastic voice.

    J.... H....

same here b4 & after usareur !!!!! his next new CD cover one foot in North america & one foot in D-land ( 'Rads loved 'em & german "son" !!! Florian op !!! ) and his package over, Blighty !!!!! lol

    J.... H....

Back in the late 1970s, I remember as a 15 year-old avidly listening every Friday night to a 6-part BBC radio interview with Ian Anderson. The intro music to each of the episodes was Bouree. Your post brings back memories.

  87. F.... S....

    "Wind-Up"

When I was young and they packed me off to school

and taught me how not to play the game,

I didn't mind if they groomed me for success,

or if they said that I was a fool.

So I left there in the morning

with their God tucked underneath my arm --

their half-assed smiles and the book of rules.

So I asked this God a question

and by way of firm reply,

He said -- I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.

So to my old headmaster (and to anyone who cares):

before I'm through I'd like to say my prayers --

    I don't believe you:

you had the whole damn thing all wrong --

He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.

Well you can excomunicate me on my way to Sunday school

and have all the bishops harmonize these lines --

how do you dare tell me that I'm my Father's son

when that was just an accident of Birth.

I'd rather look around me -- compose a better song

`cos that's the honest measure of my worth.

In your pomp and all your glory you're a poorer man than me,

as you lick the boots of death born out of fear.

    I don't believe you:

you had the whole damn thing all wrong --

He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.

  88. D.... C....

    Classic song!

  89. M.... S....

He's not the type you have to Wind up on Sunday's

  90. D.... W....

Haven't been on social media in a while. Your point is well taken. I had to be wound up every Sunday growing up, and I was still a quite devout believer. I've relaxed my stance on other people's beliefs; I've been very dismissive in the past. If it gives you solace, it's all yours. But don't tell me I have to play as well, especially legislatively. I've revised my ethic to anti-theist rather than atheist. I think that more clearly reflects my values.

    D.... W....

I never heard someone referring to him as an "anti-theist".. I kind of understand what you mean, but can you please leaborate a little more on this?

  91. T.... V....

saw them in '70 at 13 in my hometown (New Paltz NY) and I took a tab of orange sunshine before the show. Wow !

    T.... V....

Tom Vardin Good timing on that Sunshine!!!!

    T.... V....

still has an effect to this day

  92. R.... H....

I was 18 when I first heard this and I've been wrestling with the subject ever since.
