Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick (Part 2) Lyrics

LATER.
See there! A man born and we pronounce him fit for peace.
There's a load lifted from his shoulders with the discovery of his disease.
We'll take the child from him
put it to the test
teach it to be a wise man
how to fool the rest.

QUOTE
We will be geared to the average rather than the exceptional
God is an overwhelming responsibility
we walked through the maternity ward and saw 218 babies wearing nylons
cats are on the upgrade
upgrade? Hipgrave. Oh, Mac.

LATER
In the clear white circles of morning wonder,
I take my place with the lord of the hills.
And the blue-eyed soldiers stand slightly discoloured
(in neat little rows) sporting canvas frills.
With their jock-straps pinching, they slouch to attention,
while queueing for sarnies at the office canteen.
Saying: "How's your granny?" and good old Ernie:
he coughed up a tenner on a premium bond win.
The legends (worded in
the ancient tribal hymn)
lie cradled in the seagull's call.
And all the promises they made are ground beneath the sadist's fall.

The poet and the wise man stand behind the gun,
and signal for the crack of dawn.
Light the sun. Light the sun.
Do you believe in the day?
Do you? Believe in the day!
The Dawn Creation of the Kings has begun.
Soft Venus (lonely maiden) brings the ageless one.
Do you believe in the day?
The fading hero has returned to the night
and fully pregnant with the day,
wise men endorse the poet's sight.
Do you believe in the day?
Do you? Believe in the day!

Let me tell you the tales of your life
of your love and the cut of the knife
the tireless oppression, the wisdom instilled
the desire to kill or be killed.
Let me sing of the losers who lie
in the street as the last bus goes by.
The pavements ar empty: the gutters run red
while the fool toasts his god in the sky.

So come all ye young men who are building castles!
Kindly state the time of the year
and join your voices in a hellish chorus.
Mark the precise nature of your fear.
Let me help you pick up your dead
as the sins of the father are fed
with the blood of the fools
and the thoughts of the wise and
from the pan under your bed.
Let me make you a present of song
as the wise man breaks wind and is gone
while the fool with the hour-glass is cooking his goose
and the nursery rhyme winds along.

So! Come all ye young men who are building castles!
Kindly state the time of the year
and join your voices in a hellish chorus.
Mark the precise nature of your fear.
See! The summer lightning casts its bolts upon you
and the hour of judgement draweth near.
Would you be the fool stood in his suit of armour
or the wiser man who rushes clear.

So! Come on ye childhood heroes!
Won't your rise up from the pages of your comic-books
your super-crooks
and show us all the way.
Well! Make your will and testament.
Won't you? Join your local government.
We'll have Superman for president
let Robin save the day.

So! Where the hell was Biggles when you needed him last Saturday?
And where were all the sportsmen who always pulled you through?
They're all resting down in Cornwall writing up their memoirs
for a paper-back edition of the Boy Scout Manual

OF COURSE
So you ride yourselves over the fields
and you make all your animal deals
and your wise men don't know how it feels
to be thick as a brick.

Jethro Tull Thick As A Brick (Part 2) Comments
  1. H.... K....

One of my all time favourite song! And I listen a lot of good songs....

  2. J.... H....

My previous comment could be (probably is) wrong about radio in the UK at the time of Tull's great recording.

  3. J.... H....

One of the great things about Album Oriented Radio was it's power to make an "underground record" (which TAAB certainly was) accessible to young people in the U.S. Sad that Britain didn't have an equivalent to it.

  4. J.... H....

How could I have missed this brilliant recording?! I'm so glad to have rediscovered it.

  5. L.... M....

I've heard this album dozens of times over the years and I hear something new every time!

  6. J.... W....

    I do...

  7. F.... L....

Jethro Tull best album to me :-)

  8. P.... N....

When I was 16 or 17 years old . I had an apartment with a neighbor. That neighbor would beat on the walls(I think to tell me to turn the column down) oh well...!!!! I still turn it up! Now I'm 66 years old. I never thought.....

    P.... N....

    To hell with them hehe

  9. S.... R....

Well as I bought this LP I brought it home and lay it on the turntable with the label saying the title. I didn t realise I put on this side first wondering when the well known part will finally begin

  10. C.... B....

    side 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>side 1

  11. G.... I....

My first Tull album, probably the most avant-garde for the times,, classic, by class act musicians.

    B.... B....

  21. H.... F....

    I loved it!

  22. B.... H....

Actually J. T. is not my taste ( I'm a hardrocker) TAAB is a wonderful composition! Really great work by musicians, who know how to create music with different feelings ! HATS OFF :-D

  23. S.... B....

I've been told I am a very wise man, but, I still know how to think and feel as thick as a brick... just add alcohol. Hic I think therefore I am, I drink therefore I might be.... getting drunk.... hic (owner builder http://dogdragons.com & to be a Jarl)

  27. b.... g....

I remember getting kicked out of the high school library with my friends listening to this on headphones and reading the "newspaper" that came with the album. Old lady [deleted] didn't even know we were drunk!

    b.... g....

HA! My friends and I had to endure an hour long mandatory weekly "study period" in the library during high school (1971-1975) We would smoke a little sweet leaf in the parking lot before going in and had more fun than study. One of the guys is a judge now. Which almost proves that anyone can become, ah, er, I forgot what I was going to say.... Ah, good times....:)

  28. Y.... W....

the best jethro tull album ever

  29. 1.... ....

All I can say is thank god for Gerald Bostock.

  30. J.... F....

Felicidades IAN ANDERSON QUE CUMPLAS MUCHOS MÁS....

  31. E.... H....

Who is the primary composer within Jethro Tull? What is Ian Anderson’s educational background? Are they all basically self taught musicians?

    E.... H....

Ian is the genesis of most of the ideas. On this album he stated he brought in bits of music each day and the band members added to the arrangements, some parts art specifically written [ or shown] to the other guys. I believe a lot of fans think every note was orchestrated by Ian, but as in a lot of music, the main ideas are sometimes layer down, and the creativity of the band fleshes out the rest. John Evan was incredibly creative, and I believe some of the percussive synchronizeations of Martin and Barry are their creations. Ian said he would add the words afterwords mostly, so the band was usually creating instrumentals, and the words would be incorporated later... Barry said he thought he overplayed many sections on the finished product, once the lyrics were added. I think a lot of drummers were glad he did.

not many people can understand this music...can we who think understand... meet some place and listen together? please...

  42. G.... L....

You couldn't do this album today I'm shocked that us 2nd wave boomers loved this album. I love this album. Fuck Metallica Tull a way better band.

  43. V.... C....

18:05 will forever be the best transition i have ever heard in my live

  44. T.... U....

    where the hell was Biggles

  45. S.... W....

back in 1972 I played the lp for a feeble 90 year old man...for 45 minutes the look on his face was one of intense concentration...who says all r&r is a young man's choice!

    S.... W....

    never too old

  46. J.... L....

It just occurred to me that this album has traces of 'Tommy'.

    J.... L....

GOT BOTH ALBUMS IN 70S....NOT SURE OF A CONNECTION?

    J.... L....

What I do see is structural elements like JEFF WAYNE :WAR of the WORLD. Except Ian sings all the lyrics , while Jeff narrator [Richard Burton] and singing [Justine Hayward & David Essex etc].

  47. F.... I....

Fucking masterpiece! The musicianship is off the charts! The springboard for any prog album to ever come afterward

  48. S.... ....

at 6:30, I want to have sex with my own dick.

  49. T.... V....

the last cool thing done with a Hammond b-3!

    T.... V....

excluding Jon Lords "Before i Forget" 82"

  50. J.... R....

That bass line in the first movement. Those drums & keyboards in the 2nd movement. Then the acoustic guitar kicks in - and it goes on and on. A true masterpiece that contains way too much to comment on specifically. Having seen Tull 37 times, I suspect I saw them play this in its entirety 4 times. Just magical stuff that no longer exists.

  51. S.... C....

Thick as a Brick Part II aka the drummer officially goes insane

    S.... C....

@Eamonn the Egg - Gaming and more!
Yer dad didn't say he was forty years old. He said he was a Tull fan since he was fifteen.

And if you leave yer toys out, yer dad is liable to start playing with them! 😆

    S.... C....

@Pynaegan okay I'll stay out of my dad's music then

    S.... C....

    Pynaegan 🤣😆🤣

    S.... C....

    fucking fantastic.....

    S.... C....

Whilst queuing for Sarnies at the office canteen...now THAT's British!

  52. D.... ....

    Light the Sun!

  53. l.... ....

This music reminds me, we are in a perpetual war, with a curse, not to be toyed with. We wrote all the songs, together with our souls, now we have to rethink / make the garden, or lose it to nothingness. Our choices may become easier, as we go along, & we must make it so.

  54. A.... C....

Remember when my mom used to shake her booty just bad to the Bone music

  55. a.... a....

Hey it's music, not noise with sexual innuendos and half naked people dancing

    How..odd

    a.... a....

auf auf auf Jethro Tull music had many sexual innuendos

  56. o.... ....

Barrie Barlow's drumming on this is sublime

  57. E.... A....

Que importante aporte es ésta banda.
    Da mucha satisfacción escucharlos.
    son muy grandes como músicos

  58. S.... W....

the song is a 43 minute long suite which incorporates a hell of a lot more than simple rock. like that scum Richard wagner's gotterdamerung, it is full of motifs (wagner used leit-motifs) which
are united. the difference between Anderson & that awful composer of the ring cycle is I think wagner used the coda to end his opera. Taab's motifs are summed up in a sort of pseudo-coda
& the suite really ends with the opening bars repeated....What genius!!!!

    S.... W....

,....why do you call the great Wagner an awful composer? Is it because of having been Hitler's favourite one?! ;-)

"Thick As A Brick (Part 2)"

    LATER.

    We'll have Superman for president
    let Robin save the day.

  71. 1.... ....

This has always been my favorite album since it was released.  I have seen Jethro Tull or Ian Anderson more than 20 times, and the music and live performances continue to amaze.  What an amazing talent, composer, poet, musician.  Rock on forever JT!

  75. 2.... G....

started listening to this song just to see what it was like considering it is a 43 minute song, i wasnt expecting this sort of a journey, im currently a junior in highschool, and all i can say is, rock on jethro...rock on

    2.... G....

20Tristan Grace is actually an album but blends so well Ian Anderson has such a creative mind musically

    2.... G....

'Unfortunately. ' Cup of Wonder ' seems to have gone ,after all these years. 😰

    2.... G....

    Good cherry popper ain't it?0

    2.... G....

20Tristan Grace As another excited kid said awhile back, "it's an adventure!". Your age is a great time to discover Jethro Tull. Ian's lyrics lean more adult, but much humor and insightful metaphors can carry you for life. Notice how carefully the words and music fit together.
Ian didn't listen to other rock music, so his work would be as true to his vision as possible.
...oh, and nowadays, you don"t have to feel like your the only fan.

    2.... G....

20Tristan Grace This is the best time of your life to discover Jethro Tull. I always looked Ian as an older brother, enlightening me to think outside the box!

  76. f.... ....

I had this remastered CD issue with the box, and fake newspaper inside. very innovative packaging solution

    f.... ....

Thankfully I've got an original ......(as well as the CD ).....but I am very old and a Tull fan for 50 years .

    f.... ....

@bogen broom im not that old :-) i discovered it probably in 1997 or 98

  77. f.... ....

5:22 is the most thrilling moment - so dramatic, almost like horror movie soundtrack

  78. I.... ....

    cursed_song part 2

  79. M.... ....

    Best part starts at 12:38

    M.... ....

    And how!

    M.... ....

I mean the whole song is spectacular but this part is just THE ONE you should listen to if you can't spare 21 minutes.

    M.... ....

I bought this album the day I heard it on the old KFML 98.5 FM in Denver, Colorado. Then I saw the concert when they came to town, great show. I think I wore out at least three copies on vinyl.

    M.... ....

    It's all good ..

    M.... ....

    The best part is akk

  80. d.... ....

Absolutely still Yet marvelous , I’m 62 , long for those days . Miss em Greatly

  81. s.... ....

I still can't decide if this LP is superior to close to the edge or its equal

    s.... ....

    It's superior IMO.

    s.... ....

You don't have to choose. Both are outstanding. Interestingly, they both came out in the same year. Helluva year for music.

    s.... ....

@Jeff Carroll Don't forget Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo!

  82. W.... L....

A few years ago I `ve got the great honour to see Mr. Anderson in Basel with both TAAB Parts. I was so impressed that I`ve can`t hold back tears. And goosebumps still when I remember this evening. One of the gigants of the golden age of rock. And two absolute masterpieces of music. I take off my hat, Mr. Anderson.

    W.... L....

    Fantastic !

  83. T.... M....

Born on 1960.....we are so lucky to have been alive at this time so we could hear Tull and other classics of our day, I feel sorry for my parents generation who never opened up their minds to this stuff....and the new generation today who mostly don't have enough exposure to the good stuff to be able to appreciate it....

    T.... M....

I agree. 90%. There is good music today. Unfortunately often hidden and not at the main stations. But exist still. Many young musicians make good music with full heart.

    T.... M....

My mother used to listen to Tull in the 70's. Nothing for me to come home from work and she had Aqualung blasting at 10 on the hifi.

    T.... M....

You got that right, I was born in 63, our parents generation were too uptight, close minded, conformist, and religious to get into music.

    T.... M....

I was born in 80 and this is the type of music I listen to. There is hope for some of us 😁

    T.... M....

play it to your grandchildren if you have any

  84. T.... P....

What a prophetic song! Sure did see what we are seeing today perfectly! A lot of folks are as Thick as a Brick! He said it was written to be a satire! Damn it though! This satire became our reality today!

    T.... P....

And why are so many people so thick ? It is so much easyer to govern a herd of dumb sheeps....

    T.... P....

Ian was sent to inform us mere mortals .....

    T.... P....

ditto on the THICK HEADED PEEPS, did you know only 2 out of 10 of them have common sense, its true I work for a man who has 62 patents hanging in his office, he did a 6 month study on this subject

  85. J.... ....

Just listened to this while in the dentist chair. As great as it was when it came out. This and Passion Play were the best of the era.

  86. t.... ....

Ian Anderson's Madness Running Wild.......Tull Forever.

  87. C.... T....

From what I understand..Ian wrote Thick as A Brick as a parody of the “progressive rock album”.. pretentiously
    unpretentious..genius!

    C.... T....

Mostly, he created a concept album because he was tired of critics claiming he had created concept albums when he hadn't. So, he said "OK, you want a concept album. HERE'S a concept album!"

    C.... T....

@Thomas Maresh a bit like the story of Yes with Topographic Oceans.

    C.... T....

    @Thomas Maresh Agreed

  88. I.... V....

"As the wise man breaks wind and moves on"?  Does that mean the wiseman farted?

    I.... V....

    @Mr. Scout Jaws ,... n o !

  89. O.... i....

Ian Anderson is pure musical genius

    O.... i....

and Martin Barre, and John Evan, and Barry Barlow, and Jeffrey Hammond. The band ( Martin and David Palmer in particular wrote many an unaccredited pieces of music). Sadly now as Ian has aged ungracefully he should have been a solo artist.

  90. c.... h....

Ian even gave us his Bolero 11:00-12:40. Thank you very much.

    c.... h....

chris huetteman Yeah, great part, just builds and builds..

  91. N.... F....

It should be illegal to drum that hard

    N.... F....

And they should outlaw drum machines!!

  92. S.... K....

Favorite part is from 6:00 to 11:00

    S.... K....

My least favorite part is the end.

  93. E.... V....

    obra maestra.

  94. C.... K....

So where the hell was biggles, when you needed him last saturday? and where are all the sportsmen who always pull you through?

    C.... K....

    IM RIGHT HERE!!!

    C.... K....

PERHAPS BIGGLES WAS STILL STAYING IN BED !?

  95. J.... W....

Glad I grew up listening to this music. Saw JT in Houston TX, the third row from the front, after fainting in line for tickets at a mall. Guess they felt bad for me fainting and gave me tickets.
