Jethro Tull - Rainbow Blues Lyrics

Through northern lights on back streets
I told the coachman, "Just drive me on,
It's the same old destination
but a different world to sing upon."
So he threw back his head and he counted.
I jumped out about five to nine.

And I waved at the stage door-keeper
said, "Mister, get me to the stage on time."
Oh, but the rain wasn't made of water
and the snow didn't have a place in the sun
so I slipped behind a rainbow
and waited till the show had done.

I packed my ammunition.
Inside the crowd was shouting, "Encore",

But I had a most funny feeling
it wasn't me they were shouting for.
So when the tall dark lady smiled at me
I said, "Oh, baby let us go for a ride."
And we came upon two drinks or four
and popped them oh so neatly inside.

Oh, but the rain wasn't made of water
and the snow didn't have a place in the sun
so we slipped behind a rainbow
and lay there until we had done.

Let me pack you deep in my suitcase.
Oh, there's sure to be room for two
or you can drive me to the airplane
but don't let me catch those rainbow blues.

  5. S.... ....

One of the best songs ever!

  6. 2.... ....

This is one or my all time favorite Tull songs...how on earth did it get left off WarChild? I say replace “Two Fingers” with this and have “The Third Hoorah as the last track, since it reprises WarChild.

This particular Tull lineup had a sound and personality that can never be replicated. It's like every individual part being played is a parody of a part for that instrument, yet it also holds up in a serious musical sense.

  9. d.... p....

    beautiful

  10. A.... B....

Ian Anderson is one of the greatest musicians of all time

  11. T.... G....

superb vocal tone.  flute whipping past. Martin lead. rain wasn't made of water, snow didnt have a place in the sun. precise. melodic one of Trulls gems.

  12. D.... T....

Rainbow Blues was not on the War Child Album. Although it was recorded during the making of that Album. It was released on The Best of M.U. Album. Either way it is a great cut.

    D.... T....

Domenic you are right in that it wasn't on the original 1974 release of the album (which had only 10 songs) but it was included on the 2002 Remaster which had 17 tracks including Rainbow Blues.

    D.... T....

    @The Aftershock Continuum
    Actually, you are both right.
But the Best of M U was released before the Remastered.

  13. M.... S....

Ian's a cat fancier as well.

  14. D.... L....

Rainbow Blues n'est pas dans la version originale de Warchild, ce titre n'apparait que dans la version remasterisée sortie en 2002. Cette chanson figurait à lorigine sur MU Best of Jethro Tull sorti en 1976.

  19. e.... ....

Long live the greatest Scot evah!

  20. H.... W....

    J.T.= 👍

  21. I.... ....

A hidden gem from the "Warchild" era, this. Magnificent prog rock, and stellar Anderson-esque melody and quirkyness all at the same time. Love it!

  22. g.... ....

Always imagine a Hogarth painting when I hear this.

  23. T.... N....

There is not a single song better than this one.

  24. a.... ....

One of their best, along with Pan Dance and Backdoor ....  stuff

  27. d.... d....

impresionante, lo escucho hace 40 años y no se termina............

  28. H.... ....

I heard Jethro's music way back in 1969 while in Cuernavaca, Mexico and was captured by his flute 6 harp sound..... Es muy bueno en su flauta combinandola con la armónica.... hacia mucho que no lo escuchaba.... Great to hear from him again.. Thanks

  29. R.... ....

I don't know much about Jethro Tull but have liked every song I heard so far.

    R.... ....

+Richie “RichieTheHorse” Jones Tull's catalog is so vast that you're bound to find some you won't like lol. The great stuff far outshines the lesser stuff though. Keep digging and enjoy.

  30. J.... ....

seen Tull twice 1972 Tour Orlando,FL,and Columbus ,OH ..USA best Ive seen..to bad now days you pay to stand , and wave your hands LMAO

  31. J.... X....

One of Tull's best, but lesser-known, tracks. I've loved it for years. Nice to find it on YouTube in stellar sound quality. Thanks!

  32. K.... M....

awesome song!!!! One of their best. Talent dripping off their fingers.

  33. G.... J....

what's the relationship of this music with the album War Child?

    G.... J....

It was recorded as part of the Warchild sessions but wasn't released until the greatest hits LP.

  34. T.... ....

One of their best...possibly the best band on the planet.Well...except from 'The Monkees', of course.

    T.... ....

    ThePurpleHarpoon The monkees 😓

  35. r.... ....

Huge Tull fan, but this never appeared on War Child, at least not in the US. According to Wiki:
"M.U. – The Best of Jethro Tull, released in 1976, is the first proper greatest hits album by Jethro Tull. It spans the years 1969-75. The earlier Living in the Past compilation mainly dealt with non-album material, but this album only features one previously unreleased song, "Rainbow Blues"."

  36. z.... s....

    Ian Anderson Genious

    z.... s....

zebraxas screamin ...that is a fact.

  37. B.... W....

Awesome !!! Had to listen twice . Now can't get it out of my head !!!!!

  38. w.... ....

Some (sadly forgotten) song ! :)

  39. w.... ....

This song is an amazing conflagration of layers of melody lines. Try to play it with all of the off beat flourishes, fils and interludes ..nobody's playing the same thing.
And with captivating story line to match!

    Only Tull.

  40. A.... D....

The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame isn't worthy of Jethro Tull!

    A.... D....

    You got that right.

    A.... D....

    Aaron DeMasi, Absolutely!!

    A.... D....

    Right on

  41. T.... ....

    Jethro Tull and Megadeth!

    T.... ....

    Ok youre great

  42. b.... j....

    this is more like it..

  43. G.... ....

you can catch very nice pics on Tull's facebook fan page.

  44. s.... s....

    ジェスロ・タル 本当にかっこーぜ 本物のブリティッシュロックだ!!!!

    s.... s....

    :\ Hmmm,....Yeaaa!!! * What SHE Said!!! * lol :p

  45. L.... ....

I'm guessing I'm like the only person who knows this song from the Blackmore's Night cover? :D both versions are great imo, though BN should make it a bit more clear which songs are covers and not... I thought they wrote Diamonds and Rust for a while as well...

  46. P.... M....

@Aqualung71 found the song! Its a Dot.Com session song. Just write the name of the song on youtube and you'll find it.

  47. P.... M....

@yodel1967 yes my man.Like u I never buy best of's I thing at least rainbow blues is at The Best of Jethro Tull- M.U. Vol I or II, but this is a jewel. Great song. Warchild era no doubt about it. Great era for Tull members and fans.

    P.... M....

Rainbow Blues is on Mu vol 1, and Glory Row is on vol 2 (previously unrelised tracks)

  48. P.... M....

@Aqualung71 in case u find it post it and let me know. I've never heard of such song either

  49. D.... M....

    100th like yay :)

  50. c.... ....

    Temazo. Escucharlo sabe a gloria.

  51. R.... R....

thanks for the song and the pictures. Sounds a little slower though than my CD.

  52. C.... B....

I'll admit "War Child" wasn't my favorite Tull album, but among the bonus tracks on the remaster, 'Rainbow Blues' was one of the songs that made buying the CD well worth it!

  53. j.... ....

@Aqualung71 Rainbow Blues was a previously unreleased song on the "Best of" Album in 1975. Just like Glory Row was a previously unreleased song on the 2nd "Best of" album in 1977

  54. J.... R....

This is my favorite Tull song of all time. Followed closely by Two Fingers from Warchild (or Lick Your Fingers Clean if you bought the 20th Anniversary set).

  55. A.... D....

@davidcl40 Because Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is a joke.

  56. K.... ....

    I have that belt buckle @ 1:00!!!

    I wear it every day!

  57. s.... ....

where did you get all these pics i have never seen some of em like at 2:04 thats a good one

  58. P.... ....

I actually have a LIVE version of this song.
    Very rare.
Tull only played it live a few times in early 1976 to promote the M.U. Best of Tull Lp.
I'll post it song with some live shots.

  59. e.... ....

that may be, but i heard it in live concert much earlier! Greats mems, thanks again.

  60. e.... ....

    Dang I ain't heard this since 71!

Thanks!!! And you are a cup of wonder to do this

    merci, e

  61. d.... ....

I love this song, but it was not on the original Warchild album.

It was released on Tull's first BEST OF album, 1975's "M.U. Best of Jethro Tull" as an extra track that nobody ever heard before.

  62. u.... ....

    This is a great song!
    thanks!
