Jethro Tull - North Sea Oil Lyrics

Black and viscous --- bound to cure blue lethargy
Sugar-plum petroleum for energy
Tightrope-balanced payments need a small reprieve
Oh, please believe we want to be
in North Sea Oil
New-found wealth sits on the shelf of yesterday
Hot-air balloon --- inflation soon will make you pay
Riggers rig and diggers dig their shallow grave
But we'll be saved and what we crave
is North Sea Oil
Prices boom in Aberdeen and London Town
Ten more years to lay the fears, erase the frown
before we are all nuclear --- the better way!
Oh, let us pray: we want to stay
in North Sea Oil

Jethro Tull North Sea Oil Comments
  1. k.... k....

God! Tull just kicked ass! Best concerts in my life .....

  2. d.... d....

has been a favorite tull album: if I recall correctly what I read, ian had played most of the bass lines on this album because glasscock was in the hospital at the time, and was warned to take it easy on his heart, but it failed him in 1980

  3. S.... R....

40 years later the title would better be North Sea Winds

  4. M.... B....

    I always liked this Album.!!!

  5. a.... j....

From this album on and into the 80s they changed their style dramatically but i do not judge them , i think that is what makes them even more interesting. And they changed even more in the 90s, now that is a band that is always reinventing themselves.

  6. R.... C....

  8. M.... B....

Thick as a Brick (1972), A Passion Play (1973), Storm watch (1979) & Living in the Past are my favorite albums. Sheer Masterpieces.

  9. w.... m....

Serious Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong vibes with the instrumental. Love this

  10. W.... ....

Before I was Born I was @ Stormwatch Concert in March 1980. I think it had influenced me *g

  11. w.... s....

Got age 15 so cool 😎 man!

  12. L.... M....

The only group whose albums I would buy sight unseen

    L.... M....

    Same by me 🎸🎵👍

  13. S.... ....

I've been listening to Tull since 1572. Zapp since 1172. The beatles since 1874. I've been strong since 1974. I've heard enough of your crap since 739. I now hate this otherwise decent song because of you people since BC 3.

  14. J.... E....

I remember when I bought this lp. I was a teenager.

  15. V.... S....

una formidabile band ,,,,,,,, naste kala e ciao ,,

  16. a.... s....

    Harold Saxon likes this song

  17. i.... ....

My second favorite Tull album after Songs From The Wood...

    i.... ....

    Broadsword and the Beast!

  18. M.... S....

    British Petroleum Theme Song?

  19. B.... B....

This is my favorite song. I love you Jethro, thanks for your talent and optimism, it shows in your good music. The freedom shines through. Thanks, Good bunch of Merry Men +

  20. S.... M....

A bit of a moodier album from Tull. More darker and cynical. Except for 'Home" and "Warm Sporran" there are no real positive or joyful songs. The music is still excellent , harder edged and clear with ripping guitar. Anderson shreds modern society: from the oil industry to self destructive materialism to homelessness. His outlook on humanity here is mostly bleak and on 'Flying Dutchman' he asks us to "set a sympathetic flag a-flying" for those less fortunate, "or the Dutchman you will be."

  21. M.... S....

The most underated band ever.....................and most loyal fans..............thanks Ian and your many talented musicians......truly the best of Tull!

    M.... S....

not sure 'under-rated' is a relevant term here... they've been playing to a huge fan base for about 50 years! :-)

    M.... S....

Indeed! This album went un-noticed in the USA. I found it in a discount bin, took it home and reacted with an 'Oh wow, I found a winner!" 30 years later I still am amazed I never hear any of it on the radio!

    M.... S....

@馬克Marco It did get to #22 on the Billboard charts apparently, not too bad for a band that at the time was being called "dinosaurs" by the music press

    M.... S....

@馬克Marco That's because heavy horses was their last good album

    M.... S....

... and the most original band of all times.

  22. M.... ....

    Great song.

  23. J.... C....

Good tune, even if the guitar is a little weak in the mix. Could've *really* rocked if they'd turned it up a bit.

    J.... C....

Time to get the wax out of your ears--the guitar is more than adequately integrated into the overall mix, sonically speaking...

  24. C.... R....

Been listening to Tull since 1972, I was but a mere lad at the time...now its 2015...do the math

    C.... R....

Aye, me too. Earliest Tull memory was Heavy Horses - on 8-track!

    C.... R....

    ........sssssss'.

  25. F.... M....

Wonderful. It's a great pity that Mrs Thatcher didn't complete her life's ambition to shut down the North Sea oil industry after succeeding with the coal and steel industrys thus completing a 'hat trick'.

    F.... M....

    Don't talk pi-sh

    F.... M....

Frank Manzeroy I thought you hated Scotland and the Scots? Ian Anderson, the lead singer of Jethro Tull, is a Scot. Went to school in Edinburgh. Lives in Fife.

    F.... M....

He lives in Fife yet he plays flute.

    F.... M....

Eddy Viscosity I see what you did there.

    F.... M....

@lord daver Ian's dad was Scottish, and his mother English. And yeah Ian was born in Scotland but moved to England when he was like 10, so he is just as English as he is Scottish.

  26. t.... ....

At about 2:53 Barrie starts ripping a new ass and leads this song into a most intense ending.

    t.... ....

¡¡Well put, my friend!! I´ve always loved that move by Barriemore and, as you stated, the surprising ending that follows it.

  27. I.... T....

    Nuclear - the better way!

  28. T.... E....

Easily one of their best songs ever (at least in my opinion).

  29. G.... L....

My mum was hearing this song when she was 15 and I found the album in a wardrobe!!Very nice song!!
    Greetings from Greece

    G.... L....

I Agree... While you are at it...
Check out the song "Somethings on the Move" and "Orion"...
The whole album is brilliant!   :)

    G.... L....

    Saw Tull 4 times

  30. k.... b....

What a great album. Bought it new when it came out and played it TO DEATH.
Under-rated but oh so tasty. yum yum.

  31. C.... A....

Some of the songs from the 80's albums would have been better if they were arranged with better instruments and not so much keyboard laden riffs. I would love to hear A and Broadsword arranged for the old band line-up. Jeffery and Barrimore, John and the rest.

    C.... A....

    oh shut up will ya

  32. a.... ....

:44 - :50 clip was used in radio promo for the concert back then, yea I remember that.

  33. r.... ....

My first was TOTRnR. I stopped counting after 15 or 16. The great thing about the SFTW show is it was an intimate venue, a benefit show. Then 5 months later they came back to town to play the large arena, where I saw them yet again...same album. In 2000 Ian Anderson came to town where I and 10 others were participants in a local radio station meet-and-greet. Listened to him play & talk in the studio for about an hour, then come spend a few minutes with us. Impressions: very personable fellow.

  34. j.... ....

I'm envious. I never saw the SFTW/HH line up live. I did catch the Stormwatch tour in London, but by then John Glascock was sadly gone and Peggy was on bass. I'd seen Tull live once before - Warchild tour in 74, which was indescribably good, especially for an impressionable 18yr old, and many times since, but nothing in between. Can't believe now I let it happen, but I was on a low income and saving to get married. One of the many great things about youtube is being able to see what I missed.

  35. r.... ....

I always attributed this turn in style, in part, to contributions by the dual keyboard players during SFTW's conception and delivery. I remember how overly amazed I was at the richness of the keyboards, when I saw them perform SFTW, at a small little auditorium in Pasadena, Ca, about a month before its US release.

  36. j.... ....

The third "break through" in about six years :-) It certainly got them back in favour, for a while, with the critics and won them a lot of new fans. Ian never stands still musically and every album is different to my ears, but there were certainly phases - TAAB and Passion play being one, SFTW, HH and SW being another - maybe something to do with the band line ups at the time, especially the rhythm section?

  37. r.... ....

SFTW was definitely the 'break through' album for the time.

    r.... ....

More like a "comeback" album, at least in the eyes of the critics...not like they ever liked Tull much before, but after Passion Play, Tull was basically public enemy no. 1 in the critics' minds.

  38. g.... c....

i agree. Barry is certainly a more complex drummer.

  39. K.... S....

No progfan. In '82 Nuclear was still thought of as Safe and Clean. Now we know solar is the way to save the future.

  40. j.... ....

That's arguable. I'd go for SFTW myself, but they are three really good albums.

  41. j.... ....

Indeed, Clive is a great drummer - but this ain't Clive; it's Barry Barlowe, who I think is an even greater drummer, but that's a completely subjective judgment.

  42. c.... t....

Total "Salute To The Flute" Fabulous Album :)

  43. E.... B....

    heavy shit

  44. j.... s....

it is quite possible it does exist, if the songs do? then it must be really in effect then. look outside & tell us what you see..... it is reality.... this is something that does exist is DAMN GREAT music.... so sit back & listen to the greatest artistic jeniusness of IAN ANDERSON & Stormwatch...

  45. R.... B....

How does something this good exist?

  46. L.... E....

back in 1980 I made a mix tape of up-tempo songs to play on my walkman while I jogged; I put this song and 'Warm Sporran' at the very end to keep my energy up 'til the end of my run.

  47. j.... s....

this was my first album "StormWatch" ever & i still have it on cassette tape.my 1st rock 1

  48. J.... H....

@MontanaWildfireMusic I remember purchasing this album back then. the clerk at the store said: "You have good taste". I replied, "Are you into Tull?" Clerk said, "Ian's My Man". The memories....

  49. J.... H....

I understand that they rate this album as the third in a trilogy (Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses) and I must say it is the better of the three. I loved all three but the trilogy progressively got better culminating with this 1979 entry. GREAT ALBUM.

  50. l.... g....

clive bunker one of the great drummers ive heard

  51. d.... S....

    Pas mal.

  52. J.... L....

All these album covers look like Ian, u go Cat.............

  53. D.... W....

    Love this song . . . :-)

  54. J.... L....

Very cool album cover, would love 2 have it on a jersey.

  55. J.... S....

these guys play real music (actually takes skill, not just ad campaign), so there better be zero dislikes, my people !! (the torchbearer has spoken !!)

  56. 3.... ....

C'mon. It's a long way from Aqualung. But this tune is sweet.

  57. b.... .....

Probably one of the most underrated Tull albums ever.

    b.... .....

Agreed. Saw Tull perform this at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Amazing performance.

  58. M.... T....

Tull of course...not much use for the oil...

  59. H.... G....

    Tull has kept me kickin'

  60. N.... ....

    love it

  61. A.... C....

Ian plays bass here not bad ;D

  62. R.... ....

    Great song&great upload! Thanks!!!

  63. t.... l....

Living in the past is in 5/4 as well..

  64. O.... H....

    @progfan10 5/4 timing 4 sure. well spotted

  65. K.... ....

One rule though is that if you hear fantasy/esoteric lyrics and some melodies that vaguely remind you of...well fantasy. Chances are its probably a heavy metal band.
Maybe one of the reasons Blue Oyster Cult and is sometimes seen as an early heavy metal band.
And Rush sometimes bordered on heavy metal for example early on in their career.

  66. K.... ....

Not to be rude but you dont seem to be all that familiar with heavy metal..
Its been around since the seventies and what often sets it apart from hard rock is a less earthy sound and less blues influence.
Somethimes the line is very iffy though.
Like with Guns n Roses...which is kinda like a heavy and aggressive bluesy hard rock band. And the early bands had alot of blues influence too.
    Black Sabbath for example.

  67. K.... ....

    @rushpython100
The only one of them I know is Rammstein.
And they are more like Industrial alternative metal.
    Not very traditional.

  68. A.... B....

the only 2 german metal bands ive heard are megaherz and rammstein

    \(O.o)/

  69. K.... ....

    @rushpython100
    Never heard of BG?
Its a pretty big german power metal band.
And again im referring to somewhat folk influenced european metal here.
And the intro sounds a bit like a riff imo...take Mirror Mirror by BG for example.

  70. A.... B....

i listen to alot of iron maiden
    what are the other 2?

  71. K.... ....

    @rushpython100
I think it goes without saying that im talking about european fantasy metal here.
The intro has that heroic "lets go hunt some orc" omph to it and then it goes back into Tull's usual folk rock.

  72. K.... ....

    @rushpython100
Yes when you think of extreme metal bands like that then no.
Listen to some Blind Guardian or Elvenking or even Iron Maiden.
    ...pfft Defiantly..

  73. A.... B....

    listen to some pantera man
    or anthrax
    it is defiantly not metal

  74. M.... T....

Just like a fine wine lads, it just gets better with age.

  75. K.... ....

    The intro sounds kinda metal.
