Jethro Tull - No Lullaby Lyrics

Keep your eyes open and prick up your ears ---
rehearse your loudest cry.
There's folk out there who would do you harm
so I'll sing you no lullaby.
There's a lock on the window; there's a chain on the door:
a big dog in the hall.
But there's dragons and beasties out there in the night
to snatch you if you fall.

So come out fighting with your rattle in hand.
Thrust and parry. Light
a match to catch the devil's eye. Bring
a cross of fire to the fight.

And let no sleep bring false relief
from the tension of the fray.
Come wake the dead with the scream of life.
Do battle with ghosts at play.

Gather your toys at the call-to-arms
and swing your big bear down.
Upon our necks when we come to set
you sleeping safe and sound.

It's as well we tell no lie
to chase the face that cries.
And little birds can't fly
so keep an open eye.
It's as well we tell no lie
so I'll sing you no lullaby.

Don't even look at me unless you can play that drum part 30 seconds in.

A friend of mine was a rock-n-roll bump-in for one of Tull's tours in Australia, late 70s (he was also keyboard player for Aussie band Supernaut) ... he told me that Jethro Tull rehearsed the opening to No Lullaby for about 2 hours - just on the first 30 seconds. Apparently, Ian Anderson was berating the band for not getting it note/beat perfect. My mate was astounded at Tull's rehearsal ethic.

    N.... O....

@Fuz Capp Or perhaps Anderson's manic obsession. I think he took the fun out of the best era of the band. Evan, Palmer and Barlow were happy to move on by then. Martin Barre's band has bought the fun back to Tull's music.

Nobody on earth can play this drum part without busking at some point. It's insanely complex & Barlow would nail it every night live without fail. Guy was a mutant.

  8. k.... ....

I had a lot of mosquito bites after polishing the brass on my humboldt fog meter.

  9. P.... C....

First album I ever bought, back in 1978. I was 16. Still my favorite album, and this is still my favorite song.

    P.... C....

Phillip Craig can you rub your ankles?

    P.... C....

Wow! First album - now that's stepping into rock music in a big way. It was my first Jethro Tull album and after one play I thought, WTF have I bought here?!" Then I applied my album rule - play it at least 3 times. It has been my favourite album ever since. And turned me into a genuine Tull fan.

  10. E.... M....

    Barriemore Barlow.

    E.... M....

Ellis Medavoy one of my alltime favorite drummers! Unique!

    E.... M....

    Absolutamente

    E.... M....

    Drumming GOD!

    E.... M....

    He´s the BEST.

Sensational, playing a few gigs with Martin Barre in the new year, be great to see as Martin plays the harder rock bluesy edge to the Tull songs.

  11. A.... T....

Bought this album 40 years ago, still my goto when time to slow down and reminisce, country boy at heart.

  12. B.... D....

  13. R.... L....

  14. D.... T....

I used to ride up on High Knob, roll a few joints and listen this and many other Tull classics for hours. Lots of good memories on that mountain and the fire towers up there.

  15. u.... ....

Martin Barre on guitar. Distinctive sound...clear, crisp and biting. Cheers!

  16. J.... M....

Bought this album back when the re-master was issued. Would put it on repeat and drive around Myakka, FL, with the windows down, enjoying the fresh air.

    Thank you.
