Jethro Tull - A Time For Everything Lyrics

Once it seemed there would always be
a time for everything.
Ages passed I knew at last
my life had never been.
I'd been missing what time could bring.

Fifty years and I'm filled with tears and joys
I never cried.
Burn the wagon and chain the mule.
The past is all denied.
There's no time for everything.
No time for everything.

Jethro Tull A Time For Everything Comments
  1. T.... M....

Always loved on the album how this song seems to be a part II of ‘to cry you a song.‘ they kind of meld into each other. Maybe it’s just me who hears it. ?.....

  2. R.... G....

Loved this song and loved Benefit. I preferred Benefit over Standup.

  3. J.... Z....

That’s sustain on the “fake” les Paul is incredible. My favourite track on benefit. One of my favourite guitar albums. Martin Barre!!!

  4. R.... D....

    A Number one

    R.... D....

    Right you are Rick D
    Pat

  5. j.... t....

Ripple wine. Weed. And Tull. 1971. 17 yrs old wow

  6. R.... S....

... love Martin Barre's guitar work... one of my favourite Tull recordings

    this whole LP rocks!

  7. D.... L....

this was the magical Tull.Stand Up and Benefit.then it became the Ego Anderson band..magic gone by 1971.he fired glenn cornick.clive quit..ian still made some nice music but his voice ..and hair gone

    D.... L....

@ron de don don Really, you don't find any value in Tull's post-71 output? TAAB, APP, Minstrel, SFTW, and HH are all fantastic albums.

    D.... L....

@ron de don don Then you are just as wrong as Dave.

    D.... L....

@Mr Grey I don't discount all those albums you mention. All good albums! Just none seem to have that `magical' feeling (for me) that Benefit has.

    D.... L....

@ron de don don Funnily enough, Benefit is one of Ian Anderson's least favorite Tull albums.

    D.... L....

Dave Logan Seriously? Dude, hair ain’t where it’s at. Some nice music? I just have to laugh at you but we’re all entitled to our opinion. Wasn’t a bad album by Tull in the 70s. Just my opinion. Heck, Genius Anderson’s music from the 90s is dear to me.

    Did you stop listening?

  8. c.... ....

Ian is a musical genius and such thoughtful, enigmatic lyrics. The imagination to come up with a flute part that runs through the entire song! Who  else could come up with that?   I heard an interview with him  a few years ago(probably on you tube, but not sure), where he said," Most musicians have one trick, I have two, but Beethoven had three!" Enough said..

  9. J.... R....

Always wanted to see video of them performing this.. Who of us wouldn't?

  10. J.... A....

Few people notice that the lead guitar gets distorted from 1:21 to 1:31 and I could almost bet my life that it was fully unintentional but Ian and company decided to leave it "as is" due to the fantastic effect ir produced!

    J.... A....

Oooh - don't know about that. Remember, the man's a genius, a Musical Genius!

    J.... A....

    That's feedback...it was intentional.

    J.... A....

I always wondered if it was my record !!

    J.... A....

Completely intentional. And if it wasn’t there we would be bitching ! Us Tull heads appreciate those things that the producer probably wanted out but Ian (and Martin) said no no....that stays! There’s some great feedback on Aqualung as well.

  11. C.... A....

    masterpeace !!!

  12. P.... T....

I first heard this song when I was 16....loved it then, but it didn't mean much. Now I'm in my 50's....still love the song, and it makes total sense.

    P.... T....

Ian is such a genius he could write songs like this at, how old was he when he wrote this? 22 I believe. Genius. Nuff said!

Add: I was 16 and borrowed this album and Stand Up from my gf’s brother. That was 1975 had just seen my first Tull show tho I started loving them Christmas Day 1972 when my brother bought me Aqualung for my gift. I’m 61 now and still on board.

    P.... T....

57 and it's better than ever

    P.... T....

@Tom Mittemeyer Your times and memories sounds exactly like mine

    P.... T....

Rich Santoro Then you Rich, have some very rich memories my friend!

    P.... T....

@Tom Mittemeyer haha. That I do Tom. That I do.

  13. s.... ....

    RIP Glenn!!! :(

  14. z.... ....

Love the Echoplex effect in the middle with the flute..

  15. c.... ....

I always found this song humorous. We are sitting, thinking there no time for everything... meanwhile time keeps ticking away as we're contemplating.

    c.... ....

Life's a long song...but the tune ends too soon for us all.

  16. W.... B....

    A rainy Sunday morning...
    This is perfect for that

  17. g.... ....

    Love Jethro Tull!!!!!!!!

  18. F.... ....

Can somebody help me? I'm looking for a song that has a very similar (if not the same) melody as this one has right at the beggining, except that the predominant instrument is the flute and I think there is some percussion there, too. I'm not sure whether it is a Jethro Tull song, but it sure sounds like one. It is very popular. Thank you for the answer!

    F.... ....

    Witch's Promise?

  19. w.... ....

    Use your time wisely

  20. w.... ....

    Take me to the mountain...........

  21. w.... ....

Seems every bit as spacey as Pink Floyd or Genesis, understandable, challenging, with vision, rooted in the wind swept caves of classic rock....

  22. w.... ....

Most unique sound, even without the sonic sound effects of today! These guys approached music and attempted to fill every void, nook and cranny with interesting fills, subtle backgounds, well thought out changes. Always challenging the very music they just created, never idle in their evolving musicianship. They were un-famously known for NOT being in the spotlight, preferring to write and practice while touring. Not much in the tabloids then[or ever], true to their manifest MUSICIANS.

    w.... ....

willicat441 You are 100% Spot On. I couldn't have said it better myself.

    w.... ....

    Sold many millions of albums

    w.... ....

willicat441 Very well said. Big 👍 up.

  23. M.... ....

@captainlockheed214 i bloody needed him last saturday!!!!

  24. T.... ....

One of my all time favorites....this song says so much in so few words.

  25. I.... ....

@chillichomper-Oh they have every clue and its all directed at greed! Nothing has changed mate!

  26. g.... b....

@chillichomper funny how music went down hill since then, creativity went out the window.

1980 was death for music, lol.

started twitchen again in the 90's with seattle, flat lined again around 1997.

  27. S.... ....

This song is very special... I love it!
Ian's voice shines and echoes subtlely... the great guitar job and that only note sustained for 12 seconds invading the melody from > 1:20 to 1:32... simple and brilliant.
Benefit is definitely one of Tull's best albums!
    Thanks for posting :)

  28. T.... ....

@starman714 they all shine , greatest and most unique band of all time , and they can do it live !!

  29. W.... ....

Intelligent ,Heartfelt music...and excellent musicianship is ever-lasting. mainstream music doesn't want that... They promote crap you'll be sick of in a week and need to buy the next record ......

  30. p.... ....
