Jerry Lee Lewis - Wolverton Mountain Lyrics

They say don't go on Wolverton Mountain if you're looking for a wife
Cause Clifton Clovers has a pretty young daughter
He's mighty handy with a gun and a knife
Her tender lips are sweeter than honey and Wolverton Mountain protects her there
The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clovers if a stranger should wander there

You know all my dreams are on Wolverton Mountain I want his daughter for my wife
I'm gonna take my chances and climb that mountain
Though Clifton Clovers he may take my life
Her tender lips...

Oh I'm going up on Wolverton Mountain it's too lonesome down here below
It's just not right to hide his daughter from the one who loves her so
Oh her tender lips...

But I don't care about Clifron Clovers I'm gonna climb up on his mountain
I'm a gonna take the one I love I don't care about Clifron Clovers
I'm gonna climb up on that mountain I'm gonna get that girl I love

What you need now is a little history lesson. WOLVERTON MOUNTAIN was, as I already said, recorded in 1964 and released for the first time in the 1965 album, COUNTRY SONGS FOR CITY FOLKS. But you have it in a 1969 compilation album called ALL COUNTRY. Problem is, all the songs in that album were recorded much earlier! Got it?

But you said, quote, "I know that Claude King is the author of the song." That's not true.

Claude King wrote the song with Merle Kilgore and was the one who recorded it first. Released in May 1962, the single climbed upto #6 in the Top 100 chart, for a total presence of sixteen weeks. The B-Side was LITTLE BITTY HEART, but it did not chart. Anything else?

    V.... B....

Not according to Steve Kilgore, Merle's son.

I stick to the official reading on the record and the album's cover. You may be right, though. I heard many things about Phil Spector who wrote only a handful of songs, but who is credited with hundreds of them!

VICTOR BALIT )l also remember he had a tough ol’ relative who really did live up on Wolverton Mtn... Claude said he wrote it about him)
I only know & care about THE KILLER’s recording!!! ❤️THE KILLER!!! #1, Always! He takes any song, makes it a JLL record, outshines everyone! (Incl song writer) ❤️it!!!!!!
