Jennifer Warnes - It Goes Like It Goes Lyrics

Ain't no miracle being born
People doing it everyday
Ain't no miracle growing old
People just roll that way

So it goes like it goes
And the river flows
And time
It rolls right on
And maybe what's good gets a little bit better
And maybe what's bad gets gone

Bless the child of the working man
She knows too soon who she is
And bless the hands of a working man
He knows his soul is his

So it goes like it goes and the river flows
And time
It rolls right on
And maybe what's good gets a little bit better
And maybe what's bad gets gone

Yeah, it goes like it goes like the river flows
And time keeps rolling on
And maybe what's good gets a little bit better
And maybe what's bad gets gone

Jennifer Warnes It Goes Like It Goes Comments
  1. M.... R....

Remembering Ron Leibman today, who was part of this wonderful movie.

  2. S.... J....

This is a great song but "Rainbow Connection" should've won the Oscar for Best Original Song. There is a reason why "Rainbow Connection" is on iTunes and "It Goes Like It Goes" is not

  3. U.... ....

At 1:56 when the music soars and changes key- it gives me goosebumps every time..

  4. L.... C....

Judge Forces Elon Musk to Hire Back Fired Tesla Union Organizer.......still relevant today.........

  5. R.... M....

    Soooooo touching !!!
But I still think Judy Davis (a passage to India ) should have won over Sally

  6. L.... A....

    This song heals me

  7. A.... G....

If you have ever worked fast food or retail and punched a clock for minimum wage, which I have, this cascading melodic whirlwind is written for you.

  8. k.... ....

this beat out Rainbow Connection. I think this song is musically superior in many ways... but my heart wanted Rainbow Connection.

    k.... ....

    kevinfan726 seriously ???

Many who were young in North America at the time of 'Norma Rae's' release heard this beautiful song and were struck by it, and David Shire, the composer, a lesser known trooper who slipped easily from the New York stage to Hollywood to orchestrating pop, was at last handsomely rewarded with an Oscar for his work. If only 'Best Song' winners today had this grace on a regular basis.

As for Martin Ritt's film itself, it stands as a testament to the misunderstood and often derided 1970s: I can't imagine anyone today - not even Netflix, footing the bill for a story about a barely literate lower working class female southerner and a Jewish labour activist attempting to start a union in a greasy textile mill - maybe...if it were set in the costumed past, say, the 'ragtime'/menshavik era of 1905...or in another country [with subtitles!]...but in the [then] present day? - the idea seems like a bad investment...and there's all the difference between that oft presumed to be less enlightened time. The 70s were in no way perfect, and socially a great deal HAS improved since then, but now everything seems to be glazed in the 'slick'; the aesthetic of the truly shabby (except in select cases where racial divides are the focus) is avoided, even banished...and the idea that a struggling underclass is still the experience of a great many in the most technocratic of societies is quietly avoided.

  10. S.... B....

Well Barnett I am alkmost 67 years "young" and I still think that this i s THE BEST movie song ever.

  11. K.... B....

She's prettier than Sally Fields But I ain't seen an ugly "Jennifer "yet!

  12. D.... V....

Sally Field is one of the most talented actress of her generation , This film is simply a réal masterpiece , not simply a movie but a sensitive human story play and script by so Much sensitivity and so Much talent ... the kind of film that you can Never Forget if you have the chance seeing it

  13. T.... ....

This beautiful song won an Academy Award that was greatly deserved. "Rainbow Connection", written by Paul Williams for The Muppet Movie, was heavily favored to win.

  14. G.... J....

This is such a lovely song.
    ( ´∀`)ノ~ ♡

  15. l.... ....

Thanks for posting. A great song and wonderful movie ("Norma Rae" about a real life hero Chrystal Lee Sutton) about a time and people that are too far gone. These were people who fought for what was right despite the possibility of harm to themselves. It’s a shame that we no longer recognize the sacrifices from those who helped make our middle class as we become part of history.

  16. t.... ....

Rest in Peace Norman Gimble - thank you for this beautiful piece of music

  17. g.... ....

    R. I. P. Norman Gimbel 😔😔😔

  18. D.... M....

If I see the movie and miss this first song I feel cheated. So gorgeous.

  19. E.... L....

    She should have married Burt

  20. M.... W....

    MASTERPIECE!!!!

  21. J.... L....

8 people are either heartless or tone deaf.

  22. J.... L....

Perfect for the film, and an unbelievably touching and yet hopeful song.

  23. A.... S....

This is such a pretty song

  24. W.... ....

I still will never get why some in the industry have criticized this song for winning. It is probably one of the best Academy Award Original songs of the last 40 years. If anyone wants to criticize a choice it should be giving the award to "You Light Up My Life" over Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better"

    W.... ....

    The Rainbow Connection

  25. M.... W....

Miss Jennifer is A CONSUMATE Artist!

  26. D.... b....

This beat Rainbow Connection? Nice song but really?

    D.... b....

Rainbow Connection is a beautiful song, but yeah, really. This is a powerful song.

  27. J.... 1....

    Very heart touching.

  28. J.... 1....

Wow. Very heart touching. Norma Rae is also an classic.

  29. M.... W....

Beautiful song and so appropriate for Norma and what happened to her! Sally was brilliant in her portrayal!

  30. B.... L....

I first heard this song I guess it's been 38 years ago. I must have gone to see this movie back then at least 10 times ... mostly to hear this song. After all these years, it haunts me still. It's been almost as many years that I put away singing and acting to make a living. Now that I'm old (69) I've picked up my very first string instrument ... a baritone ukulele my Mother bought me when I was in the 6th grade. This is the song I still remember -- and this is the song I'm learning. I don't sing any more - but surprisingly - one still can learn things, so I've been working on an instrumental arrangement on the Bari for this. It's a very complex and beautiful ballad and I'm not sure if I'll every master it -- but it is so lovely -- and it brings back so many memories of when Sally Field and I both were young. The world was so full of promise. Funny how time can steal so much of that. Glad to hear this again and remember. Thanks for putting this up.

Love this comment. The best comment on YouTube!

    B.... L....

I don't know what tore my heart out more, listening to this over and over or your comment. Probably a bit of both. I too gave up my music career to get a "real" job back in the early 80s to be able to support my new wife and child. It's funny what time and circumstance bring or take from your life over the years. What it can never take is the love of beauty and this song was and is nearly the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. In all these years, the beauty of this song has never left me.

Thank you for your words sir. They too are beautiful.

    B.... L....

Haunted! Yes, that's the word for it. Only this week on You Tube I viewed and listened to every version on You Tube. Somehow, here's a song that gets better. Here's a song with sheer melody...something modern songwriters (well, they are writing chants, really) have forgotten about. Can recommend the Michael Crawford and Sarah Mann versions highly.

    B.... L....

Barnett Langford thank you for your story. The song and your words made me weep.

  31. D.... G....

    Haunting Melody.. Great Performance...

  32. S.... B....

t his was absolutely the BEST rendition of "It Goes Like It Goes" that I have ever heard! This is as close to perfection as one could get.

  33. O.... M....

Those 3 people downvoting this song clearly has no damn taste for good music.

  34. S.... ....

    Glen Campbell sang it best!

  35. M.... L....

An Oscar winning song. I remember the night it won.I was so glad I love this song.

  36. K.... O....

Okay, a powerful song about a working class struggle. Yes, I am biased thinking that " Rainbow Connection" from Muppet Movie should have won the Oscar for Best Song in 1979.

    K.... O....

Rainbow Connection is beautiful. But this is the better song. And I love ""Rainbow Connection", but its sentimentality doesn't beat this powerful song.

  37. l.... ....

JW did some fine work... This is only one of them...

  38. b.... m....

Makes me cry every time. So Beautiful.

  39. L.... P....

I love this song plus "The Flannerty Bird Flew Around Mars'

  40. S.... B....

this is absolutely one of the best movie songs which I have ever had the privilege of listening to!

  41. t.... ....

    Love so very much...

  42. M.... K....

    Love love love

  43. h.... ....

    Beautiful song, fabulous singer!

  44. g.... ....

Problem with this catchy tune is that it's too red.

    g.... ....

The problem with your brain is that it's a little too ignorant and outdated.

    g.... ....

    @Simon Deacon
    BAHAHAHAHA!  *high five*

  45. T.... ....

Absolutely, unquestionably the most underrated Oscar-winning song of all time!
