Jennifer Warnes - Hard Times, Come Again No More Lyrics

Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears
While we all sup sorrow with the poor
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears
Oh Hard times come again no more

Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door
Oh hard times come again no more

While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay
There are frail forms fainting at the door
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say
Oh hard times come again no more

Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door
Oh hard times come again no more

There's a pale drooping maiden who toils her life away
With a worn heart whose better days are o'er
Though her voice would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day
Oh hard times come again no more

Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door
Oh hard times come again no more
Oh hard times come again no more

  2. D.... C....

civilization 6 brought me here its the american theme song

  3. P.... D....

    Mom. 🍧

  4. D.... E....

Damn, so bittersweet, melancholic, and moving. The common experience of all people everywhere.

  5. J.... W....

LOVE Jennifer Warnes. I have three of her LPs, and treasure them.

  6. T.... L....

    Love her voice.

  7. p.... ....

One of the very best of American Songs.

  8. B.... G....

    Bernie’s campaign song.

  9. P.... B....

What was the cackle about ? . B

  10. P.... H....

*God bless you all that aren't in argument of harsh times is and has been for over 200 years upon us* !. Theirs a saying" we survived to see more times and this to shall pass !.

  11. D.... B....

Fosters songs perfectly captured the feelings of his time .. It gives us a window into the past ...Victorian sentiments and a distinctly American soul

    D.... B....

    Bianca Britt
I’m not sure that Foster’s songs are just about the past. This one and others are still relevant.

  12. C.... d....

Nice version but why did she or they change "sup sorrow" to "share sorrow" when "sup sorrow" in the original lyric perfect and alliterative to boot. And alliteration is a key in the opening lines:

    "Pause in Life's PLeasures"
    "counT iTs many Tears"
    Sup Sorrow

Sup has the powerful connotation of sipping the cup that Jesus drank from perhaps with connotations of the Last Supper. "Share" has a more abstract feeling to it. Also alluded to is Psalmist: "My cup runneth over (23:5).

    C.... d....

Oh, BALLS!. It's routine and acceptable in the folk tradition. to make minor changes. Many times these songs were passed down after one hearing, in a live setting....where there was non electronic recorded music. An old, old song like this no doubt has dozens of variations

  13. r.... ....

Oké, I love everything from JW's repertoire, but in this case: listen to TOMMY FLEMING's version !

  14. O.... ....

    Beautiful song.
    Easily adaptable lyrics too.
I sang a version of this for my girlfriend to shame her into not pooping with the door open. Vile creature.
"It is wrong, it's wrong what you are doing.
[Redacted], [redacted] poop again no more.
Many times your stink has lingered outside the bathroom's door.
Oh [redacted] poop again no more."

  15. j.... ....

    Nice old-timey version.

  16. 3.... ....

    GO TRUMP!

    GO!

    AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!

    AND TROUBLE US NO MORE!

  17. C.... W....

This paid advertising for Knute Buehler makes me want to vomit. Terrible candidate.

  18. E.... L....

    Simply gorgeous!

  19. S.... R....

    Chorus:
'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, hard times, come again no more.
    Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
Oh! Hard times come again no more.

    Chorus

    4.
'Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave,
'Tis a wail that is heard upon the shore
'Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave
Oh! Hard times come again no more.
    Chorus

  20. T.... E....

242 year state. Is this something? You could be proud of it! Slavery. Free work for Mexicans. Fallen wars .. First atomic bomb is your glory!
This music is a shit. Whine!

  21. P.... C....

Very nicely done, like your different voices how you did this Classic beloved Song. The photos were great to see with the Song.

  22. J.... N....

Thanks for posting this. I have it by James Taylor with Yo Yo Ma, Mavis Staples, and Bob Dylan. Gael Force has a nice version, too.

  23. K.... T....

    Far Cry 5 anyone?

  24. S.... P....

One of Stephen Foster’s best songs. I bounght Jennifer’s vinyl album when it came out circa 1969. A beautiful voice.

  25. A.... G....

Let's not forget the last verse: "Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave; 'tis a wail that is heard upon the shore. "Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave: O! Hard times. Come again no more!" Omitted here (as in all modern versions I've heard) is the beautiful diminished chord on the word "weary" in every chorus as written by the author. For some reason that's become, ubiquitously, a IV chord in its place. This is a beautiful a cappella, but I miss that diminished chord.

    A.... G....

Is there any version available out on the web which renders the diminished chord on the word "weary" as the composer had intended it, Alonzo?  I'd love to listen to it, if it exists.  Thanks.

  26. B.... E....

This is a great American song and Jennifer Warnes has one of the great American voices. She should be a household word.

  27. m.... ....

this is one of the nicest covers of this oh so sad song the images go so well with the storey

  28. L.... M....

    Brilliant!

  29. o.... h....

    Just beautiful...

  30. C.... R....

    this song is beautiful

  31. J.... W....

    Lovely singer

  32. i.... ....

First version I ever heard of this crazy intense emotional lyric, and the version that I will always prefer : play it at my parting.

    i.... ....

Oké, I love everything from JW's repertoire, but in this case: listen to TOMMY FLEMING's version !!
May be also some more from this remarkable singer.....his rendition goes 'trough the bones' ! He's the best what old Ireland has to offer!!

  33. J.... H....

Sounds like the McGarrigles accompanying her.  Very precise.

    J.... H....

It doesn't sound like the McGarrigles or the Wainwrights to me, that might have been nice though.

    J.... H....

There is a version of this with the McGarrigle sisters, Rufus Wainwright, Emmy Lou Harris, and Mary Black from the TransAtlantic Sessions that is very good, it's on YT.

    J.... H....

    or Debbie McClatchy

  34. M.... B....

Hank, no I don't want the wicked to be punished, yet, they need to be and they will be.
I play this song on the piano and love it. By the way, Mavis Staples also sings this song and has a beautiful rendition of it. I like the way Jennifer Warnes sings it too.

    M.... B....

I play the Mavis Staples' version on the piano as well. A beautiful song!

  35. R.... S....

For a spine-tingling rendition, listen to Tommy Fleming.  What a great song this is--it seems to work, no matter what!

    R.... S....

I thought Tommy Fleming's wasn't that good. This sounds much more original and heartfelt.

    R.... S....

I just listened to him , what a great rendition , I'm still looking around YouTube for other artists , thank you .

  36. M.... B....

The Millennium is coming and all those that made times hard for others will get their just deserts.
There will be no hard times then.
    The song is beautiful.
    Thank you Stephen Foster.

    M.... B....

so your first 'Christian' thought is punishment for others ?

    M.... B....

@Michael Bonner ...desserts maybe, but you don't often get just deserts

    M.... B....

+Jim S It should be spelled "deserts" in the context Michael B used, as the noun form of what people "deserve" (not that I agree with what he said).

    M.... B....

This new generation sucks - any slightly older generation

    M.... B....

The older generations sucks- every generation ever until they become the oldest living generation. So the cycle continues and nothing gets done. If the old generation continues to berate the younger then the younger will continue down the path the elder wants least. Even those among the younger that try to learn from the old and still move forward are undone as the majority of the young move towards madness. So I ask you how do you break the chain?

  37. p.... r....

Such lyrics and harmony is food for the soul. Makes life worth living.

  38. d.... ....

Truth Is...we look back through the filter of our existence...No way we can know that time, but some of Us get close , call it empathetic, call it whatever,,,is there for a reason if We but at least try and grasp it...has meaning beyond the obvious....amazing

  39. J.... J....

As true now as it was when written...It's so sad

  40. G.... ....

An incredible song, and without question one of the very best versions on record. My other favorite would have to be any of the Emmylou Harris versions.

  41. c.... ....

Thank you for subscribing. I am open to suggestions for uploads, Laerd.

  42. V.... W....

Yes, it's work and a half. That must have been a great concert, what with Taylor and the other "string merchants" putting a special touch to that music. Have to check out more about it.

  43. V.... W....

Yes, a fine CD. I listen to it all the time. You have a great library of songs on here. I subscribed to your site.
    Thank you for your work.

  44. c.... ....

That CD is great. I also really like "Slumber My Darling" by Alison Krauss, Yo-Yo Ma, Mark O'Connor, and Edgar Meyer and "No One to Love" by Judith Edelman.

  45. V.... W....

Yes, it's great!! I have it on a CD of songs from the Stephen Foster Songbook.
There are so many different approaches to this song by so many wonderful singers and instrumentalists. So far I haven't found a dud in the bunch, just so many great presentations. Okay, so some people don't like some of them. I haven't heard a dismal one yet..strange, yes, but certainly worth hearing.

  46. c.... ....

Also see my upload of Mavis Staples' version.

  47. V.... W....

I'll look for it. I think I like this song no matter who does it.

  48. c.... ....

James Taylor also did a very good version.

  49. g.... ....

Wow. Stephen Foster only lived 38 years?

  50. P.... ....

This nice song encourge us in hard times to-day!!!!!

  51. V.... W....

Mavis Stapes and Thomas Hampson set the example for singing this for today..IMHO. About your comment = hahahahahaha! Thanks.

  52. c.... ....

    Best version!!!!!

  53. R.... D....

The best ever arrangement of this song!

  54. D.... C....

This is one of my favorite versions of this song.

  55. T.... H....

I've love this song and listened to it for years by many talented singers. It's structured in such a way that it can be performed in very different styles and still be pleasing This version is quite nice it's a good arrangement and Ms Warnes has a beautiful voice.

  56. v.... m....

ouch.....this version should come again no more..shame..this song has true meaning which you undermine......
