Jefferson Airplane - Turn My Life Down Lyrics

When I see you next time round in sorrow
Will you know what I been going through
My yesterdays have melted with my tomorrow
And the present leaves me with no point of view
When I see you next time round look into my eyes
Where we'd be never could decide
Borrowed moments they cannot fill the moments of our lives
And wishful thinking leaves me no place to hide
No place to hide
No place to hide
I see the shadows softly coming
Taking me into a place
Where they turn my life down
Leaving mourning with myself
And nothing to say

Was forever fortunate to see them live in San Diego, Balboa Stadium where the SD Chargers used to play. I believe it was the so-called "Summer of Love". Also there were Poco, and I think Buffalo springfield. If I dig back into my old photos, I'd find other bands also. My wife and I made tuna sandwiches for anyone who wanted one. Very special times.

  14. M.... C....

  20. J.... K....

The Airplane flew me right into a new style of music way back in 1965!! Everything they did was solid gold!!

  21. 1.... ....

These young kids today don't know what good music is.
    I have become my parents.
Ha ha ha. I love it.

Baby boomers are perfect assholes. Our nation can finally heal when they all die off.

    J.... F....

You are correct James. We are perfect......OBTW, I didn't realize the country was ill.....later pal.

  25. W.... Q....

Worst song Kaukonen contributed to the band. Completely unmemorable, and one of two tracks (the other is Song For All Seasons) that prevents Volunteers from being a complete masterpiece.

    W.... Q....

If you were a musician you would understand the sublime nature of this piece. Listen to Jorma, listen to the counterpoint, listen to the originality. Sorry for your inability to appreciate this masterpiece.

    W.... Q....

we're all different: i feel exactly the opposite - this is the best song on the record - creatively, harmonically, and melodically...and i can do completely without the rest of the album....and i love the Airplane

    I beg to differ.

  26. R.... E....

    Almost Reggae...

  27. A.... ....

I know this song is from Volunteers and Volunteers was a great piece of work. But for me Bless It's Pointed Little Head was the Jefferson Airplane's best. In 2008 I read where Marty Balin said that BPILH was his favorite and the rest of the band felt the same way.

  28. g.... m....

I love this album! All songs. This one and Crown of Creation are my favourutes Jefferson Airplane' s albums.

  29. N.... J....

    Steve Stills on organ...

  30. O.... R....

    RIP Mr. Kantner

  31. s.... ....

Incredible! This is one of the best late-60s songs ever. I love how it is begun so quietly and mysteriously. It simply expresses the sentiment of such a turbulent decade.

  32. F.... D....

    Glorious music !
Makes you happy to be alive !

  33. M.... S....

Peace, Love, and Joy my friends, I pray you find it all and join us in God's Paradise for eternity. All You Need is LOVE.

  34. J.... B....

The Ace of Cups' backing vocals on the Airplane's Turn My Life Down are exquisite

    J.... B....

    Another great S.F. area band!

    J.... B....

Tommy Smothers once introducd them as some of the most vicious ladies around.
    His brother corrected him: vivacious.
    Brought down the house.

  35. R.... I....

as good a guitar solo (at the end) as there is; right up there with the one grom "darkness, darkness" (youngbloods 1969)

  36. F.... ....

    Doesn't come any finer!!

    F.... ....

They said I can't smell?? pissonit&,,ant hills will eat you?

  37. J.... A....

Surely one of my favorite Airplane songs as well, but some here wonder why it's not better known and more popular? IMHO, it's just too
complicated to ever be popular! How can a song so short have so much detail and how can a song so memorable be so unhummable (think I just made that word up)?

    J.... A....

+Julie Alexander I think it's because most people only really cared about White Rabbit and Somebody to Love. Hardcore fans are probably the only ones to take the time to appreciate all of their other material.

  38. J.... ....

I'm surprised this song isn't more popular. It's a really clever composition and I think it speaks to most people's lives.

  39. S.... D....

my favorite Airplane song, I have been saying since this song came out that the ending lead was Jerry Garcia, the middle lead was definitely Jorma. I saw both The airplane and the Dead many times at the Fillmore east and the lead at the end of this song was Jerry playing uncredited. Anyone agree?

    S.... D....

them's that have ears say.... nope!

    S.... D....

I have ears and i say YES

    S.... D....

If that is Garcia he was playing Jorma' srig. Their two sounds are very different. On top of it there is signature riff of Jorma's at 2:36

    S.... D....

That is 100% Jorma on lead at the end. Never have questioned it. Never EVER thought it might be Jerry. The mere suggestion strikes me as kind of silly. The tone of the guitar is signature, Jorma. That tone is all over every Airplane album from Baxter's onward. Like the dude above said, "them's that have ears say.... nope!"

    S.... D....

I've heard the song since the album came out, and never suspected it was anyone other than Jorma. However, now that I'm entertaining the question, my guess is that if it's NOT Jorma, then it probably isn't Jerry G, either. Not really Garcia's type of playing at that time, or any other, it seems to me. Jerry does appear on the album elsewhere, and on subsequent JA, JS, and Kantner-Slick-et al., endeavors, of course. But if the last lead in TMLD is not Jorma, then my guess would be that it's John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service. Listen to his leads on their studio version of "Fresh Air" and his leads elsewhere in QMS. Just a suggestion, but it's where I'd lay my money if, in fact, it's not Jorma.

  40. p.... ....

@pq02lamzo I know what you mean, but there was a lnk to the very special time,ie 1966/7 when everything was new and good. comparatively, volunteers isnt quite as good, if you can objectively judge such things, but if the 2 you mentioned were 10s ,volunteers would be a good 8.

  41. J.... T....

    @bendbadgersteve you're nuts....the later stuff was gold....as this is...

  42. K.... A....

@pq02lamzo Wooden Ships, Turn My Life Down, Eskimo Blue Day, Hey Frederick... Yes, I can say this is an elite album, and one of their best. I'd say it has more standout tracks (Wooden Ships is one of my favourite tracks of all time), but isn't quite as consistent as SP, Crown, or Baxters. I probably frequent Volunteers the most, though. Or Bless It's Pointed Little Head, or Live At The Filmore, or Baron. I think these guys were at their bast in the early 70s, When Jack's bass ruled.

  43. J.... A....

no question.... this is the best airplane album

    J.... A....

    it was my mother's favorite . . . . .

  44. L.... R....

    best airplane lp ever sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

  45. K.... A....

    @puddypuss

I'd have to (respectfully) disagree. Bark and Long John Silver certain had some special feel tracks. When The Earth Moves Again, Third Week In The Chelsea, Easter?, Alexander The Medium, etc... some of the finest work by Jefferson Airplane imo. Not to mention, Kantner, Slick, and Frieberg's Baron Von Tollbooth... (1973) is quite possibly the best album any Jefferson Airplane member has been a part of, and nearly all of them are featured on there. But you're right about the 70s era..

  46. K.... A....

the first half is excellent, the second half is incredible!

  47. p.... ....

this is a good solid lp with good songs, and was the last of their special feel albums before the onslaught of the more commercial 70s

  48. b.... ....

@pq02lamzo Back then, these bands were under such intense pressure to put out new material. We knew this album was thrown together, but hey, we were just along for the ride. And what a ride it was!

  49. b.... ....

Great lead break by Jorma to finish out a really neat tune. Great vocals by Marty...again.

Really good album. From Surrealistic Pillow through Volunteers, everything Airplane touched was artistic and/or commercial gold. All downhill from there save for Kantner's BATE.

Never the same after Spencer left.

    b.... ....

I'm seven years late but if you were referring to the last solo, that's Jerry Garcia :)

  50. I.... ....

There's a video posted of Jorma on an interview show where he is asked what artist living or dead he would have wanted to record one of his songs. He said Aretha Franklin. The interviewer asked what song and he said this one. I can kind of hear it.This thing holds up pretty well.

  51. t.... m....

One of my favorite songs on one of my favorite albums!!!!!

  52. K.... A....

    @hellswinter

I love the change in mood at 1:40. A perfect example of the kind of powerful shift in direction only JA could do well.

  53. K.... A....

@rockman1754 not sure if I agree, but it's honestly the one I most frequently listen to. Especially while driving! this...hey frederick, wooden ships...awesome driving music, and you never get tired of it

  54. c.... b....

Nice song...Not usually the one that anyone recommended but when it was performed it always evoked a nice HUSH over the listeners.

  55. k.... ....

Steve Stills on the Hammond B3 gives this song a nice edge!

  56. i.... ....

I was talking to Vanessa Kaukonen last week about this song and she told me that Jorma has never played it solo because there is "no way he can hit the notes"

My take...do it as a shuffle and put it into the Hot Tuna repertoire

  57. b.... ....

Superb vocal by Marty and two great guitar breaks by Jorma. Concise and to the point.

Love it. Always have. Always will.

  58. n.... ....

Hear what you're saying skinhead. I never saw them myself, but my brother went to a concert back in the late 60's or early 70's and Slick could hardly stand up, let alone sing! She apologized, said she was to high (or drunk) to perform and walked right off stage not to return! Sad that some artists seem to forget that they have a full time job just like the rest of us, eh? Great song though, one of their best IMHO.

  59. J.... D....

Totally underrated, but I think they only have themselves to blame. I saw them a long time ago and I was not impressed by them live. However Jack and Jorma did a kick ass Acoustic Hot Tuna set. I think Grace should have given a little more respect to her audience and put on a decent show rather than showing up two sheets to the wind. Anyway, I still think they kick ass!

  60. B.... G....

Just google Ace of Cups website.

  61. B.... G....

The female backup singers on this track are a group called the Ace of Cups. They have a website.

  62. l.... ....

Yes, this one is one of my favourite from the Volunteers album. Stephen Stills on Hammond organ is great, but the best is how Marty sings this song.Amazing!
'I see the shadows softly comin' '...:)

  63. j.... ....

Was hoping someone would post this up, my favourite Airplane song. Jorma's guitar break, though it's short, is superb.
