Jefferson Airplane - Long John Silver Lyrics

Long John Silver, ring in his ear,
He's the hero, make that clear.
Does the same thing his father did,
Sailing around the Caribbean,
Robbing kings with his talking parrot,
This time I think he's on the high side.

Scabs are forming, scraped his knee.
Guards are warning, a bad man is free.
He's like electric clock that needs no winding,
Keeps the time without your hands.
Western feet need no binding,
Take a barefoot run through old Japan.

He's seen a thousand countries,
They're all the same.
Some men are crazy,
Some of them sane.
But all men are ruled by a flag or a game,
And he knows nobody's got you if you don't sign your name.

Long John Silver serves no king.
No land holds him, that's why he feels like singing.
Every country now and then,
Roars like Irish, drunk and singing.
Every monk will now and then call his men to hear the wenches,
Night bells ringing.

One of my favorite albums including Bark.

My copy of Long John Silver is signed by Paul kantner Jack casady and Jorma Kaukonen. Yours is not. I've had mine since 1974 and used to sell dope out of it, yours is not. But truthfully on the inside of the Box word has all the marijuana, the weed looks like they weren't even getting high on it, low-quality dirt weed from Mexico

  6. c.... b....

sincere thanks and technicolour rainbows for posting this meta-psychedelic album..... everything on here is geared to take ya much further than ever before.... with a bit of assistance from the ever vigilant neon angels..... what a fantastic album.... lyrics music and the universal narrative...... greetings from tasmania and suitably wasted in the growing antarctic freeze

  19. R.... U....

Long John Silver was john lennon first stage name ,, wonder if he Long John Silver !

  20. m.... ....

Grace Slick was an astonishingly good lyricist. This is probably her last great song. I totally forgive her that gratuitous reference to us Irish in the last verse. We are not all roaring drunks. At least not all the time.

    m.... ....

Last great song? What about Hyperdrive, Theme from the Movie Manhole and Garden of Man?

  21. C.... Z....

Grace Kelly : poderosas voz y un icónico grupo.

  22. T.... D....

Jefferson Airplane actually broke up in 1970 when Marty Balin quit to launch a solo career and Spencer Dryden was thrown out for being too stoned to play and missing gigs. However, there were still legal contracts with RCA requiring them to do three more albums, so the remaining members went into the studio for the absolutely insane studio sessions that produced Bark and Long John Silver. When Jorma and Jack quit, they released Thirty Seconds Over Winterland to finally complete their obligations.

    T.... D....

@Thomas Devine Was Dryden still lying around nude in the sand ? Just couldn't grow up :)

    T.... D....

the sixites took it's toll on everybody

    T.... D....

    Just a lonesome la cowboy

    T.... D....

you dumb fuck, you are so false history . know nothing

  23. L.... V....

@wakarusarat its not that her vocals are raw, its that its a shoddy microphone/mixing by the soundman/studio. This is a good song, but could have been better if it was a little more crisp, 'high-fidelity'. Aside from the bad mic, the rest sounds like it was recorded on a 4-track whose tape heads haven't been cleaned.

    L.... V....

Linas Vepstas I know what you’re saying. Always thought the same thing. Love to hear a remix of this album.

  24. J.... Z....

Grande King!

    J.... Z....

    Me too.

    J.... Z....

    me too !

    J.... Z....

Sue Snell cosiendo.....a poco de que estalle el Infierno.

  25. M.... ....

No way to explain how Grace's quirky power-voice always hits the most hedonistic nerve in my soul.

  26. t.... ....

Grace's vocals sound rather shot throughout the whole album for a good reason - -she was drinking (and maybe drugging) heavily during the sessions. She's said that she remember recording it! The rest of the band was rather burnt out as well -- the Hot Tuna and Paul/Grace albums that surround this one are tons better. But this tune is sort of fun -- an ode to a brand of pot? Thanks for uploading!

    t.... ....

Hmm..why do I have this line drawn through my post?

    t.... ....

she was indeed blasted during this trying time for the band..

  27. D.... R....

This album has a far heavier sound than their other records. I don't know why I've always liked it best.

  28. Q.... ....

I bought it new, right after it was release. I used that stash box until until it started to leak. I never saw the commerical they made with Rip Torn as Long John but I recall a photograph. I love the guitar work on this album was well as the vocals.

  29. D.... B....

I, too, believe that Grace Slick is the best female rock vocalist ever. The only person who comes close, in my mind, is Stevie Nicks. Airplane and Tuna rock!

  30. O.... C....

Mi banda predilecta por muchos años!! y sigue alegrando mis días!

  31. G.... F....

Who else discovered this album because of the novel "Carry" of Stephen King?

    G.... F....

    Georges Farina Me

    G.... F....

Yes, Carrie led me here. Not sure it's my thing but it's good to try new music.

  32. G.... B....

Lord, I used to have "the hots" 4 her, back in the day!

  33. L.... ....

She was one of the best singers, period.

    L.... ....

    WAS? Ladybug you mean IS....................

  34. n.... ....

I heard this song for the first time just crossing the Ontario boarder into Quebec on the 401. It was summer and I was 18, and it;s still good to be alive, but I relive that exciting moment everytime I listen to this song.

  35. M.... S....

The Airplane was coming to the end of their hey-day with this album, so I'm glad they decided to go out on a fiery, angry balls to the wall delivery. Not the tightest, not their best, but throws you against the wall with its fury. Many a stoned night loving and listening to this angry LP.

  36. j.... ....

gee, the airplane must be getting popular again - you have to watch a commercial before hearing Long John Silver

  37. j.... r....

I still have the album in mint condition the day it was released. I think I paid $ 4.99.

  38. P.... ....

    MUY BUENA!

  39. g.... ....

    @jackhillt Isn't that sad?

  40. j.... ....

@grandmachristine42 it's Easter they took off youtube - mustn't be critical of the Church in the these days of ultimate freedom

    j.... ....

seems like the vatican has so much to hide

  41. 6.... ....

@grandmachristine42 There is a vid of Aerie....search on YouTube and it's the one with the pic of Grace Slick....enjoy.....Peace....61

  42. F.... B....

Usually an old man with a white beard walking around in long johns is homeless or a child molester, but in December he's magical

  43. g.... ....

"Aerie" can't be heard on YT in America?

    g.... ....

    bloody hell why not...?

  44. i.... ....

@kchauncey BARGAIN?? ...its a bargain as in history.....I dont care about price.....bargain here means music bargain...you are obviously obsessed with mathematics... loosen up, take some acid...... re-aligned your values

  45. J.... ....

    this song is awesome

  46. P.... ....

    Great Song !

  47. O.... C....

Este es el album que más me gusta de JS. Tiene un sabor que mezcla la vieja rocola y el buen rock.

  48. r.... ....

this is fucking horrible,no wonder why they gave people such awesome album artwork for this album and bark.

    r.... ....

who cares about your stunted tastes

  49. K.... A....

@theperkinater That makes three of us. This album in particular showcases Grace's incredibly powerful voice....songs like this one, Aerie, the end of Alexander the Medium, and Easter? are good examples.

    K.... A....

agreed this is a temendous album and such a progression of differences to that which came before

  50. G.... H....

my favorite track from this great album...lyrics are like a 'Fairy Story on Acid'...cool!

I had this album as well. The cigars all had JA on them. Jefferson Airplane or jays......you make the call.

  57. j.... ....

beautiful song - performed somewhat incoherently but not without its own loopy charm
