Jefferson Airplane - In Time Lyrics
Long time since I climbed down this mountain before
Things I've seen here make me want to go running home
Lean close put your lips next to my face
Look further on past the surface
Orange, blue, red & green
Are the colors of what I feel
And my mind y'know it starts to reel in time
To know your flesh layin' by my skin
And I wonder whenever I'm in
Warm, soft, nice & now
Are the word things of what I know
And my body y'know it's so in time
Ah darlin' tell me what can I say
Dance, sing, sleep & dream
Is the music of what I feel
Among the many things whenever you're near in time
Come with me my friend
Come on now and take my hand
You can be my friend
Soon be in another country

SUBLIME
This music and group were/are special to me. As an electric bass guitarist, i really think that Jack Cassidy's sound was special. Love to hear his playing!
You can feel the darkness of the end of the 60's here
Kantner's most sublime composition. Would play this for space aliens who wanted to know what the hippie ethos was all about.

one of the trippiest love songs ever........ <3

This album is drenched in acid. Brilliant psychedelic album that is basically a continuation of "After Bathing at Baxter's." I'm 67 and happy that I saw JA numerous times at their peak.
Grace's voice is transcendental on this one.
This song is a perfect example of Jacks 'GROWLING" bass....
Perfectly executed song. Sublime guitar licks in the background add to the beauty of it. Coordination between vocalists and musicians is so cool. No dull moment. A close listen or two reveal the layers of sheer beauty this song has.
I totally, completely, absolutely, extremely, frantically, permanently adore the sound of JA. Balin, Kantner, Slick, Cassidy, Jorma, and Dryden were all great. They knew the art of creating sound so beautiful that it is just out of this world. Nobody had done it before. Nobody has done it since. One and only JA.
The Airplane at their polished best. Gone were the experimentations of 'After Bathing at Baxters' and in it's place tight, potent acid-drenched love songs. Paul Kantner in his finest hour. The first time I heard this, I shed tears of joy and inspiration.
we may not hear these songs originated by people anymore, but to me they sing loud in my heart
Jorma is impeccable on this. He was tuned into something pretty deep
At 2:22 you can hear Grace (with headphones) give out a little moan.... beautiful song
Goodbye< Marty Balin, thanks for the great tunes. Hung out with the Airplane & The Dead & Crosby, Stills, etc. as they jammed together at The Dead's home - 'The Family Dog' off the Haight in San Francisco, 1968.
Does anybody have a clue as to what Paul is doing on this? Can't figure out the voicings, sounds like a 12 string for the acoustic rhythm parts...possibly in one of his c tunings he learned from croz?? songs in a minor so that would make sense...
Absolutely fantastic tune. Timeless. Wish I could have seen JA live Soo bad in their hey day.
I can't find one bad song on this album. I think it was their best one by far..
One of the most quintessential bass performances EVER...
That sustain at the end. Magical. And Jorma's solo break demonstrates why at times he was an astonishing electric guitar player.
Another forgotten gem.... 8th grade Council Rock middle school Damn I was a cool kid. Great stuff! Still sounds fresh.
Jack Casady's bass playing is amazing. Jorma Kaukonen's guitar break (2:04) is beautiful, elegant and packs a powerful emotional punch. One of my favorite JA songs....
Mike Shannon oh, and the harmonies.
cifra CHORDS PLEASSEE
I was lucky enough to see JA at the Westbury Theatre in New York back in 1968. Westbury is out on Long Island not too far from CW Post College. I was 18 and playing drums in various rock bands as well as working in the the New York studio scene as a session player at the time so I know my music. JA stood out from all the west coast bands with just their presence and sheer musicianship. For me, one musician changed my life as a drummer - Jack Casady. To this day, his tone and fluid playing impress me. So, when you listen to the JA, stop for a minute and really listen to the bass playing of Jack and you'll see what I'm saying. Especially on the song "Triad", or go back to the "Baxters" album and listen to "Martha" which will really put you back in the Summer of Love.
Hello San Francisco 1969 Goodbye
albums like these make me wish i lived through the 60s, but then again being able to listen to it 100 times online is pretty sweet too
no echo chambers reverb auto tune back in those days just music
A couple of days. Sorry.
Listening to this a couple after the anniversary of Paul's death. Yet another great song he never got the credit he deserved for.

Put “in time” on its own lines and then read the lines backwards
Great song. So interesting how they played behind, on and in front of the beat. I'd say it was a bitch to play live though.
Fine track from my favourite band of the 1960s. So good.
Favorite cut from this album.
rip Paul, my dear friend. forever the airplane in my heart. you live on
" My friend,My Friend".
I can see the peaks of Colorado emerging!
I was unaware of Paul's passing until now... no wonder he hadn't written. Better check in with the family
And they say Paul wasn't a good singer.... This sounds like good singing to me.
His voice couldn't have carried a band, but it nicely complemented those of the great Balin and Slick.
Who said that?!!
Paul, Grace, and Marty - All fine singers.
Paul was a good background vocalist but Grace and Marty had the mighty pipes....
@Kim Parish Usually people who need to hear a high note to consider someone a great singer. Yes, Paul wasn't a flashy singer, but he had one hell of a vibe going on whenever he did lead vocals.
I love this tune by Paul & Marty I'm going to miss you Paul. RIP
Always loved this song. A true hippie anthem.
RIP Paul Kantner :(
This one hurts. Airplane has been a personal fave forever.
I caught a pretty good version of Jeff Starship in 1979 or so. Kantner, Slick, and Papa John Creach were there. I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember if Balin was in the band. But they played "Have You Seen the Saucers!"
Afterwards, we sneaked backstage. I espied Paul Kantner walking up some stairs and yelled something to grab his attention. He looked our way and I, a bit starstruck, could only muster, "Did you know Jimi Hendrix?" "Yes." "Was he cool?" "Sure." He walked down the stairs to talk to us. Alas, I had nothing for him to sign. Ah, but I did!! And so for several years afterward I had Paul Kantner's signature on the back of my driver's license.
His greatest work...
Saw the Airplane do the album live, on their 'Crown' tour, back in, was that 67, or 68? At the end, we all joined them on stage, and I was a foot in front of Grace, she smiling at me, and I was rather sprayed by her spit as she was singing away...didn't ever want to was my arm again... They were one of the absolute best bands ever. Saw them 5 times?...
Daniel Mantey that is fucking amazing.
A window in time when all was perfect and glorious but held in suspension by death and destruction in a land far away...
I had grace by both her ankles at the same time both were not on the ground. hmmmmm....
I wish I had been there 67or 68
Daniel Mantey Probably spring ‘68. They played a lot of it May ‘68 when I saw them in NYC. Always loved this trippy love song, in time.
In Time is one the Airplane's best examples of their sound, reflecting the hope, mind frame, and beauty of it's era. Danny, I was there, and do I miss it. Then and now, the US is a completely different place.
+Phillip Pacheco Is it, though? We have a corrupt govmnt, a war that makes no sense, A generation seeking balance. I'm not too political, but I sure was then. I think the spirit of our times is alive and struggling to save our country. Peace to ya. You were there.
. . . ah darlin' what can I say? Dance, sing, sleep and dream is the music of what I hear. Maybe not applicable to our great society today but your point is well taken. Only, JA and many others were exploring the final frontier of the mind and spirit, not the "plastic" and physical realities of ordinary life, and for one very brief period we taught ourselves to play. Learning playtime in all you do IS really being in time. Thanks for your post, ToolCat.
+Phillip Pacheco Thank you, Phillip.
You don't think someone felt the same way about the US as you do now?
this song captures sex, love and acid all in a steamy caldron
Back in the day this was considered music to ball your old lady by.
In some ways, this is the weird song they have did. I love it soon. Did they ever do it live?
@Larry Beckham Yes, on the Copenhagen concert on youtube. Good show that one.
This makes me miss a time I wasnt even a part of
Feel the same, and it make me feel sad.
Peace
dannydreadboy that explains everything I've ever felt. glad to see I'm not the only one.
yes, but, you'd be much older, now! enjoy your youth!
You are a part of it because this still is.
Even after all these years, it still sounds as great and fresh as ever.
Jefferson Airplane in my opinion one of the greatest American bands from the hippie era. Would have loved to see a The Doors and Jefferson Airplane concert. The two best bands at the time. Shame that JA is so underrated nowadays, people only know Somebody To Love or White Rabbit.
Saw the Airplane and the Doors in concert, and yes, it was an incredible time to be young--they were a part of my generation.
I have nothing against The Doors but JA is a class of its own. To me, music by The Doors is 30% noise but that of JA is all honey and silk.
Grace Slick..Manhole album is Awesome.
@Chris Morfas Need to listen to their in-between years. Planet Earth RockNRoll Orchestra.
DE ACUERDO, HUBIESE SIDO DICHOSO VER Y OÍR EN UN CONCIERTO A JEFFERSON AIRPLANE Y LOS FABULOSOS DOORS!!
7 people are clueless and obviously have no idea what good music is. They probably listen to Justin Beiber and Adam Lavine.
The song is absolutely beautiful, like a dream. Jefferson Airplane was in top form with the album. 1968 was so turbulent... but JA added music that lifted a person out of the turmoil. "In Time" is soothing.
I couldn't agree with you more. This song, in my mind, defines Jefferson Airplane. Peace.
Dante LeVally This cut seems to be a continuation of the vibe from Baxter’s. Agree one of my favorites. Sublime
@Thomas Bedell yes. they carried the Baxters vibe, but pulled the reigns in a bit and polished it. a beautiful flawlessly crafted song.
Sexiest hippie song ever...I got laid to it
not unless he's talking about windows OS
Do orange, blue, red and green represent anything in special? I am not good with country flags.
maybe theyre discovering it now and truly diggin it...? I dunno maybe they just want to step into another "place" ...I would if all i had was justin booger and the other pop garbage of these day ,,ya know? But good question. :) LOVE the Airplane! ! ♥
It's on the right actually.
Can we drop the "I'm this old and I have this opinion about this song" and embrace the music? Age is only a number, my friends.
Who the fuck cares how old are you? It's not about the age, it's about having a good taste in music. You could be 3 and hear this music, just as you could be 80 and hear pure shit. So stop with these stupid messages, nobody cares about your age.
here here! i'm 60 and am having the time of my life, much happier than I was in my 20s
im 19. i really dont give a shit
THATS RIGHT
Check out phosphorescence - the quotidian beasts

A symphony of sensuality.
Please let it never end! Please.....

3 people unfriended me?! WHAT?! but...but...i dont even have a facebook... T_T this is blasphemy
My beer review channel's named after this song!! The Airplane sure were at the top of the Psychedelic scene! What a band.
whats up with 12-19 year olds telling how old they are and how they love old music?
You just reminded me of the Be Here Now guy- Richard Alpert\Baba Ram Das
@anacanapooner woah now
what the fuck does plane head marine mean?
plane head marine
thanks for posting this
Paul Kantners absolute best song ever. Sexy, haunting anf beautiful.
This song makes my mouth get all watery, just like back in the old days.
Hello JoaniePH51, It was a magical special time. I too have remembrances and thank you for yours. We then made it what it was. "Come on my friend..."
Thanks for the post
@fIugasche But they were harsh critics of all the BS around us.
@geckoman1220 I did when i got wicked stoned and started jamming along then my friends joined and went off into a crazy spacey jam. I'll stay sober and re figure it out and this time write it down for you and JimmyPage968. And others who happen to come across it.
@iheartaltoids I'm actually saddened to read this post. Don't kid yourself, many of those runaways ended up in a lot of trouble from which they NEVER recovered! I do agree with your point that the "music" of your era totally f'ing blows!!
@nachoisone Oh yeah, would that be great. Well, definitely let me know. Thanks
@JimmyPage968 I would love to learn this song as well I think it's in G I''ll take time to learn it then I'll message you
@nachoisone Haha, thanks, yeah that's true. But i do really want to know how to play this song.
@JimmyPage968 All i know its played in the key of epic
Does anyone know the chords to this song?
@JoaniePH51 I can't relatrr relate ...I am 55... never found a love like you.... cant relate4u........I will someday...pray for me...serious.... i found alot of stupid woman.....stupid
@JoaniePH51 I'm a 19 year old guy, but this almost brought me to tears...Your poise is very admirable
Grace and Marty's backing vocals on this are as good as it gets anywhere. This is what a clinic sounds like. Dig it.
@popmachine12 I agree, even alot of hippies prefer "feel good" music like Grateful Dead to Jefferson Airplane. JA was always intense and often brooding like this gem is.
@ivycompton Yeah there's no other song in all of rock with an ending like this. Sublime!
@MrNikesify be where you are now, man. you mom is mistaken in this. you were born when you needed to be born. your era is now. your music is what you hear today. please don't hate music. just listen to what makes you feel. don't hate. please.
a 42
Wonderful <3
Perfect name for the song cos they were all so in sync with each other on this classic tune, allowing perfect space for each other. Love it.
