How can anyone not like this song?

This sounds a bit like the stones....why do I say this? because it sounds like the stones got inspired to write "I know it's only rock n roll (but I like it)" by this song - the verse of their records sounds familiar to "feel so good".
Great record! Though I prefer the 11 minutes live version.

I saw them play this song live in '72. Jorma literally leapt out onto the stage, flashed the crowd the peace sign, and launched into this. :-)

Jorma's vocals are great here! At L.I. Raceway back in the 70's there were so many people who could not get into the sold out show the fence's came down when the A.P. started playing this song. Free double barrel Orange Sunshine for everyone at this show!

I had the extreme of witnessing this tour, but by Hot Tuna rather than Airplane. Airplane was the BEST and Hot Tuna is great!

Yup you're right. If you listen to the demo you can hear someone going 'boom boom, yup yup'. You can hear what sounds like 2 more people singing the verse along with Jorma too!

According to Sammy Piazza (drummer from Hot Tuna), him and Michael Shrieve (of Santana) played drums on this song, not Joey.

One of the all-time great rock attitude songs - I'd listen to this over "Layla" or "Stairway to Heaven" any day. This recording is so alive. Jorma's singing and playing on this song is iconic - some of the best wah-wah pedal work ever done. Jack's huge tone on bass makes my marrow quiver with excitement. Joey Covington's high point with JA, also. Who's on piano, I forgot - Nicky Hopkins or Grace Slick? Even Paul Kantner is cool here on rhythm guitar (and I really can't stand him).

The live version at Winterland blows this away.
