Jayhawks, The - Comeback Kids Lyrics

I drove out to hubert humphrey at five in the morning
With a carry-on bag and a southwest ticket in my hand
In my hand

You were waiting at the gate
In the same dress you wore the night I met you
We raced past the desk clerk
She looked up from her bookwork and she smiled

Rdu and here we are
Rdu and here we are

Cold and blow like a baseball diamond
Waiting for the summer
Staying inside, your toes'll stay dry
But never touch the sand
Go it alone, feet moving forward
Trying to find the answer
Then you appear, like fate put you here
And then I'm finally home

I fumbled for the door
And on the sunlit desk I bent and kissed you
Your neck swept up like a graceful sail caught in the wind

We're the comeback kids
Never forgetting what we did or where we came from
I held you so close
As we slow danced to fox in the snow

Rdu and here we are
Rdu and here we are

Cold and blown like a baseball
Diamond waiting for the summer
Staying inside, your boots'll stay dry
But never touch the sand
Go it alone, feet moving forward
Trying to find the answer
Then you appear, like fate put you here
And then I'm finally home

Jayhawks, The Comeback Kids Comments

My favorite song from the album, which is fantastic. I'm from Raleigh, NC, and Gary has played solo around here many times over the past few years, and I've often wondered if there's a specific reason for it (other than just performing). The chorus of this song mentions the airport code for here (RDU), so Gary obviously is familiar with it. Would be cool to know what, if any, is his connection to here. Hoping to see the Jayhawks here in the next month.

@PD Larson That would explain it. Thank you for the info.

Is it my mind playing tricks on me, or did the volume go up just a tad at 3:28 when the volume knob on the car radio was turned? That was either a neat mind trick or a brilliant concept to add to the video. Anywho... my favorite track from one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite bands.

Revisiting 2016...this is definitely in my top 5 songs of the year! The wurlitzer at the end is my favorite part of the song

Never a dull track from these guys

The whole album is stunning. This is a standout track, along with Lovers of the Sun (that soaring mid-section) and Ace. Lucky enough to see The Jayhawks again recently in Bristol, England. Very few bands can perform as well as they record. Brilliant.

Great track from a cool band
