Jay & The Americans - She Cried Lyrics

And when I told her
I didn't love her anymore
She cried (she cried)
And when I told her
Her kisses were not like before
She cried (she cried)
I thought that our romance was over and done
But to her it had just begun

And when I told her
Another girl had caught my eye
She cried (she cried)
And when I kissed her
A kiss that only meant goodbye
She cried (she cried)

And when I told her
I didn't love her anymore
She cried (she cried)

...This is the ORIGINAL Jay/ John Traynor on cover of SHE CRIED album...center top row...We were in the same Marine Corps unit from Paris Island to 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines ...6 years... he is also in the photo with plaid jackets, bottom. At P.I. The drill instructors would call him out of rank and bark
“Sing it Traynor”, and he would sing it acapella ...sounded great in the midsts of a hectic round of basic training...Jay was a mild mannered gentleman and nice to be around for our M.C.stint... You can find a few performances on You Tube, search: “Jay Trainor she cried” Jay passed away a few years back...I think they mention it in memoriam...RIP...Jay...Semper Fi 🇺🇸 (Google for photos of Jay)

Such a sad song, but his voice is so awesome. And the music is so beautiful !!!!! love this song. One of my favorites I listened to with my dad

My favorite by this group, Jay Black amazing voice, but this Jay is just as good.

  10. J.... M....

I'd like to comment on the above. While David Blatt agreed to be called "Jay" the "Black" came when he was misintroduced on a day time talk show by either Mike Douglas or Maury Povich

this sounds like something youd hear in a horror movie while the killer is breaking in and brutally murdering a family

I'm 39 and I grew up listening to 60's music from my late mother. This is without doubt the greatest music, other than classical, the world has ever known and ever will know.

Young people pay attention to what this ballot is about. This may have been the best thing that would ever happen to this guy in his life but he did not recognize that. A true love comes but once in a lifetime and I hope everyone will be able to recognize that. I am saying this from experience. I like the singer met other girls also but even as a very young kid I knew what I had in the girlfriend that I had and thank God I did because we spend a lifetime together before cancer stole her away from me. You never know you may only have one shot at true love make sure you take advantage of it.

I miss Jay, we were friends back in Greenville Central school. We kept in touch . I miss him - he was such a gentleman all his life. I remember him on the basketball team and the night he slipped on the floor and split his knee open. WE rode school bus together. He was so humble all his life. I remember it all like it was yesterday.
    I miss him so much.

I knew Jay as well from High School days as I went to Cairo Central and remember Jay competing in a Battle of the Bands held at Cairo High. Jay had a really great voice and I was VERY SORRY to see him leave the 'Americans'. I met Jay years later when he was cameraman on a job for a Albany station and he was still the great humble person he always was. RIP Jay and know you're sorely missed

  31. d.... ....

Oddly, my first single purchase of Jay & the Americans was "Cara Mia", although I was aware of the earlier hits. I had "She Cried", so it has to have been a later release. Did the group reissue the single later? Always loved Jay Black's voice, only recently learning that he wasn't the original lead singer. That man could sing. I saw him on the PBS doo wop special and he still had the ducktail (even though his hair was fully gray). His voice was still powerful, easily hitting that high note and holding it forever. Getting back to "She Cried", I had the Shangri-Las' record, and Jay's version hit here a couple of years later. Unless it was a reissue, I am baffled by the timeline quoted above. Also, you state that Jay Black was the only member of the group not to attempt a solo career. I was a follower of Billboard by then, and he did, indeed, have at least one unsuccessful solo single. It was a time when solo acts weren't getting the airplay. Wayne Fontanna left the Mindbenders and failed to score as a solo. The same fate befell Mitch Ryder after leaving the Detroit Wheels. I was always under the impression that Jay had the same luck. Hope someone can help with this confusion.

  32. K.... M....

They are showing Jay Black. Jay Traynor was the lead on She Cried, not Jay Black. The B side of this is as good as She Cried! Dawning. Not on this site, though...

  33. P.... F....

I was very young roundabout this time and had no idea of the singer but I did recall hearing Cara Mia. I have recently heard the song again on You Tube and how delighted I was. Jay Black is the only one I know and he had a fantastic strong voice. The songs are very atmospheric.

How a man with a voice this magnificent ended up as a "one hit wonder" is tragic. John Traynor, born in Brooklyn in 1943, died from liver cancer
    aged 70 in 2014.

On this day in 1962 {April 6th} Jay & the Americans performed "She Cried" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
At the time the song was at #34 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, six weeks later it would peak at #5 {for 1 week} and it spent fourteen weeks on the Top 100...
Two covered versions of "She Cried" have made the Top 100 chart, the Shangri-Las {#65 in 1966} and the Lettermen {#73 in 1970, and #6 on the Adult Contemporary Tracks chart}...
Between 1962 and 1970 Jay and the Americans had twenty records on the Top 100 chart, four made the Top 10...
Besides "She Cried", their three other Top 10 records were "Come A Little Bit Closer" {#3 in 1964}, "Cara, Mia" {#4 in 1965}, and a covered version of "This Magic Moment" {#6 in 1969}...
John Traynor, the original 'Jay' and lead singer on "She Cried", passed away at the age of 70 on January 2nd, 2014...
    May he R.I.P.
Personal note: In 1962, WTLB-AM in Utica, NY was central NY's only local rock 'n roll station, and they played the B-side of "She Cried", "Dawning", as often as they aired the A-side...

Reminds me alot of "Out in the Streets". That's almost like the female perspective of this song.

  53. T.... ....

I’ve always loved 50s music and I still do to this day. I loved this song since I was younger because his voice just pulled me in. I love singing this song because the words have such a meaning to them.

  54. C.... ....

For many of us we have good memories from the 60s sandwiched between Vietnam memories. Loved Jay And The Americans. Had some of their albums but my mother threw all of my music away after I enlisted along with all my clothes and personal possessions. But so good to hear this music via youtube again. You really can't go home again....as they say.

  61. k.... n....

I was unaware that Jay Black was also one of their lead singers. I just listened to this song and thought it didn't sound right but it was because it was with with Jay Black. He was good but I liked Jay Tray nor better. Loved their music!

  62. j.... ....

Isn't this sung by Jay Traynor, and NOT Jay Black ("The voice")?

    j.... ....

I think I'm confusing this with another early hit tune of theirs.

    j.... ....

I was right the first time unless they both sang it. But I do know Jay Traynor sang it in 1962 and it was a hit,

  71. C.... D....

    WOW Beautiful Music!

  72. P.... L....

Sounds so optimistic. I wish politicians loved music.

  73. R.... D....

Jew singers ashamed of their real names and heritage. Good song.

    R.... D....

I don't think they changed their names out of "shame," but because their names were either difficult to pronounce, too long, or didn't have enough appeal to them because of various other factors. People of many races and cultures changed their names upon entering show-business, especially non-Jewish white citizens
born in England and the USA, descendants of the Anglo-Saxons. Your comment sound like something an ignorant
contentious racist lunkhead would dream up!

  74. L.... D....

love that my parents got me into this beautiful music at a young age.

  77. T.... W....

Most wonderful songs on the 60's! Their songs had such great meaning!

  78. B.... C....

One of the best slow dance songs ever. His voice was so rich and crisp.

  79. j.... ....

they show Jay Black here but it's not his voice.

    j.... ....

    It's not Black....it's Traynor.

  80. M.... R....

    fabulous

  81. 0.... ....

The phenomenal fact of Jay and the Americans is that when Jay Black replaced Jay Trayner, his voice ad vocals were so close to Traynor's that it blew away the rest of the band, and the public, back in 1963 never knew the difference. It was thirty years later that I learned the voices were two different people. But Traynor or Black, this group will be one of my favorites forever!

  82. R.... F....

Jay Traynor had a fantastic voice, one of the best pop voices ever. However, Jay Black was, in my opinion, the man with the best pop voice of all.

  86. M.... W....

With the great voice of Jay Black's the group went on to have numerous hits throughout the 60's. Cara Mia is a classic, but their other hits were excellent as well.

    M.... W....

Jay Black did have a great voice, but it's not him on this hit.  This is Jay Traynor - the original Jay.

  87. j.... s....

    Traynor died 1-2-2014

I had heard this mournful break up song long ago and many times. It sounds so Brill Buildingly. I just knew the composers HAD TO BE one of the following Brill Building teams (Lieber/Stoller), (Pomus/Shuman), (Goffin/King), or (Weil/Mann). I figured I had it down to Lieber/Stoller, their instrumental bridges (I'm no musician) on "Spanish Harlem" and "Stand By Me" had the beautifully sad element to it, and how they used the strings. King (Ben E) wrote part of SBM, and Phil Spector wrote part of SH. I suspect had Lieber/Stoller written the song it probably would have been sung by King and/or The Drifters, which should have been my clue they didn't compose the song. Surprisingly (to me anyway) it was none of the above. The song was written by Ted Daryll, and Greg Richards. Can't find much on them except that Daryll is a drummer, and Richards plays guitar. I have their photos of an earlier day, and know they were New York based, so they just MAY have been Brill Building dudes, I don't know. The song just smells of of the Brill building and or perhaps Phil Spector in some way.

I just love the ending instrumentation with the arrangement of those soaring violins, cellos, and double bass(?). Sometimes I won't let the song end because I keep going back to the 1:45 mark and replaying that section, it could be it's own concerto.

  89. J.... E....

The lyrics to this song are so sad that I want to cry. :,(

    Thanks, yet again, Phil Spector.

  96. G.... ....

My God. So sad but so beautiful. What a voice. I always think I want to turn back the clock, but boy, I don't want to go through that kind of pain again.

@steve hammond I am still alive and thank my God for ell He has done.

    G.... ....

@steve hammond Yes. I am awaiting Jesus's return. I canot wait. Thank you Lord.

    G.... ....

    @Pat Melton
You people have been waiting 2000 years for the return of Jesus. You're kind of slow Learners aren't you. Get over the fairy tale from the Bronze Age. And stop spewing your nonsense when a comment on this song would have been enough.

    G.... ....

@tackless .... what business is it of yours to be replying to something that you have shown you have absolutely no understanding or concept of!! And a further point nobody was even addressing you!! I would suggest you mind your own business, reread the last sentence in your OWN comment and apply it to yourself... Stop being a troll!!!!!!!

    G.... ....

    @Bonnie J
I don't quite get what you're saying . It's okay for a Christian to give his opinion but not me. You're just another Evangelical asshole and I stand by my statement keep God out of the comments. Go back to reading the good book of fairy tales I'm sure you'll be happier. Faith is the death of reason.

  97. N.... ....

I don't know why but this always had a West Side Story feel to me.

    N.... ....

It may have been recorded during the same session when they did record a couple of songs from "West Side Story."

    N.... ....

it was the sound of the very late 50's early 60s..

    N.... ....

That makes sense. Same era. Good observation.
