Jay & The Americans - Gypsy Woman Lyrics

From nowhere through a caravan
Around the campfire light
A lovely woman in motion
With hair as dark as night
Her eyes were like that of a cat in the dark
That hypnotized me with love

She was a gypsy woman,
She was a gypsy woman

She danced around and round to a guitar melody
From the fire her face was all aglow
How she enchanted me
Oh, how I'd like to hold her near
And kiss and forever whisper in her ear

I love you, gypsy woman
I love you, gypsy woman

All through the caravan
She was dancing with all the men
Waiting for the rising sun
Everyone was having fun
I hate to see the lady go
Knowing she'll never know
That I love her, I love her

She was a gypsy woman
A gypsy woman, a gypsy woman, a gypsy woman

Jay & The Americans Gypsy Woman Comments
  1. J.... O....

    Que coooros! Grandiosa cancion

  2. B.... S....

    Great Hurcules story line

  3. R.... O....

Lo siento pero aquellos que escriben que la version de bryan hyland es mejor estan eqivocados. ESTA ES LS MEJOR VERSION!

  4. R.... M....

Every time I hear this I think of a picture in National Geographic of a really ugly Gypsy woman opening a beer bottle with her teeth.

    R.... M....

You mean the toothy woman seducing Herc? Yeah, he should have hit on the dancer lady but beercap teeth would have had him killed.

  5. D.... S....

What a fantastic choice of visuals! I almost forgotten how all those epic Sword, Sand & Sandal films always had a hot dance scene. This was one of the better ones! ...I also remember Debra Paget dancing with a snake in another similar film.

  6. g.... ....

That video is so erotic, but very tasteful.  I love it.

  7. j.... s....

    Where's Mike and the bots?

    j.... s....

That was the perfect movie for MST3000. If it wasn't for MST I would have never seen the original Herc.

  8. S.... ....

You should hear this by Brian Hyland. It is the definitive version of the song.

    S.... ....

Brain nailed it, but this is also a great version.

  9. t.... ....

I love Hercules was that Steve Reeves?

  10. J.... J....

That is not Jay & The Americans singing this, and it doesn't even sound like a man singing it, it sounds like a woman, but it surely is not Jay Black.

    J.... J....

That is Jay singing this.  You can really tell in the second half of the songs when he sings "All through the caravan...."

    J.... J....

It most certainly is Jay Black. I assume you have never seen him in concert.

    J.... J....

It is Jay. I remember this song from early 60s. I bought the 45 and have the mp3 on all my devices. That dancer is the high point of that herc movie. Good match with the song.

  11. l.... ....

    I love the video.Steve Reeves-Hercules Unchained

  12. j.... p....

Good job but check out The Impressions for the unchallenged 1st version, not to say that other versions don't stand on their own but differently, like Bobby Womack's rocker and Santana's Santana.

  13. L.... T....

Sorry, Curtis Mayfield had it going on!!

  14. W.... R....

Brian Hyland's Gypsy Woman.....you can hear the lyrics on the original by him...

    W.... R....

+Wolfs Rain I just posted the same thing!!!

  15. J.... D....

    HERCULES UNCHAINED

  16. J.... D....

good movie and steve reeves musle man

  17. D.... ....

@dunepaul9999 You don't name the Steve Reeves movie. Thief of Baghdad ? That is a very rare movie and extremely hard to own. I read years ago that it is seldom offered for sale. I hadn't heard this version of Gypsy Woman prior to visiting here, amazing sound, better rendition than Brian's as the style is more appropriate to the lyrics. Then again, it's just my opinion. Thank you.

  18. m.... p....

Poor Curtis. This really sucks.... Sure Mayfield would raise FIRE over this slipshod

  19. m.... ....

What a great combination, Steve Reeves was my favorite childhood hero and this is one of the songs from my teens that just sticks in my mind.

  20. J.... ....

Thanks for this. I used to play this B-side at the old corner store jukebox and haven't heard it in quite a while. Great version, but they all are really, 'cause Mayfield wrote such a fabulous tune.

  21. A.... ....

What a different sound from Jay Black! Heard this before, but didn't notice how different it is. Love anything by Jay Black, of all stages and ages. Thanks, dunepaul, and thanks for the info which I had forgotten.

  22. J.... F....

I'm a big fan of Steve Reeves also!

  23. d.... ....

    @emmettk

You are so right. My bad. Impressions are great and deserve all the credit due.

  24. d.... ....

    @1959Munchkin

fabulous peps r great, no doubt about it. very different style but truly great. i listen to them often.

  25. 1.... ....

Sorry great song but fabulous peps by far the best version...........

  26. 1.... ....

Sorry great song but fabulous peps by far the best version...........

  27. s.... g....

my fave is still the original so soul ful but i like them all

  28. B.... H....

Gypsy Woman -by Curtis Mayfield or (Curtis Mayfield) in the Impressions in the 60's was his song, the rest were bad covers,Curtis like so many other artist that were ripped off. Do yourself a favor and dig the originals ,nothing to do with old or new just quality like any art........

  29. i.... ....

Nice version and funny to see my old time bodybuilder hero, Steve Reeves in this clip. Muscles, Music and Mujeres

  30. J.... S....

    OK WHO DOSED MY COCO!!!

  31. m.... ....

    Steve Reeves was awesome.

  32. t.... ....

Thank you for sharing that with the group. Curtis (solo) gets my vote.

  33. d.... ....

you hit the nail on the head

  34. d.... ....

all opinions are welcome. thank u for yours.

  35. J.... S....

all are good in their ON way...

  36. N.... H....

    Oh ok... thankyou.

  37. d.... ....

No, The Impressions 1963 were the originals

  38. N.... H....

    Is this the original version?

  39. a.... a....

    Is that Steve Reeves?

  40. d.... ....

you are right. brian actually got the idea for his version from jay & co, not the original from the impressions.

  41. m.... ....

Bryan Hylan took a great song, accentuated its best parts and made it better. Thats all. He couldn't have done it without Jay and Co.

  42. d.... ....

Well, maybe thats why it was the "B" side to "Hushabye".

Thanks for your comments. All are appreciated.

  43. m.... ....

good record cover version or not

  44. M.... ....

Definately a fine version of this song. I just found a version of "Sister Love" on You Tube. It's the first song on "Nuggets from the Liverpool Five ( Part 2)" . Well worth checking out. I did like this video work too.

  45. C.... M....

THe original was by The Impressions in 1963, seven years before Brian Hyland's. When did THIS version come out?

  46. j.... r....

nice steve reeves video to go along
with song.did u know steve reeves
did almost exact scene in later film
he did 'thief of bagdad' sitting on
    couch with beautiful woman drinking
    and watching some women dance.
    anyway great version of song.

  47. d.... ....

Thanks for commenting. It comes down to what you prefer as to your taste. I just happen to prefer this version.

  48. d.... ....

I agree and thanks for the comment.

  49. d.... ....

Yes that is Steve Reeves and thanks for the nice comments. Glad you enjoyed the video.

  50. g.... ....

Keep up the great work. Excellent rendition of cool song. U picked a great video to accompany it. Was that Steve Reeves (of Hercules fame) in the vid?
