Jason Isbell - Tupelo Lyrics

Haven't been wasted in a long time
But tonight it feels just fine
Riding home with the windows up, alone with a plastic cup of real good wine

If I get out of this hole I'm going to Tupelo
There is a girl out there that will treat me fair
You get about a week of Spring and the summer is blistering
There ain't no one from here that will follow me there
No there ain't no one from here that will follow me there

She said there's nothing left to talk about
At my age I should've figured out
Which drawer to put the good knives in
And the wars between the weekends tore the playhouse down
Kept her close but way too close to me
She never lived up to my memory
Driving fast with the windows down
A past I don't belong to now
A mystery

I get out of this hole I'm going to Tupelo
There is a girl out there that will treat me fair
You get about a week of Spring and then Summer is blistering
There ain't no one from here that will follow me there
No there ain't no one from here that will follow me there

I get out of this hole I'm going to Tupelo
There is a girl out there that will treat me fair
You get about a week of Spring and then summer is blistering
There ain't no one from here that will follow me there
Well there ain't no one from here that will follow me there

  3. T.... I....

All of a sudden I am looking forward to listening to real music again.

    T.... I....

My sentiment, exactly. And inspired to play too.

  4. S.... S....

    YES. This fucking song rocks.

  5. J.... G....

Listened to this at least a thousand times. And was just moved by lyric I hadn't noticed some how. Amazing song writer.

I was in no hurry to move to Alabama back in 1995.. As a kid that just was old enough to call him a man, I moved taking my new bride. I work for Walmart, and at the time they were just really gearing up for our big Grocery push in the company building Super-centers everywhere just about..lol. Anyhow I ended up living in Florence Al, .. for a kid from South Florida it was a bit of cultural shock at first.. but now?. No where else I would rather be.. love this state and some of the nicest people you will ever meet.. if you had told me then that I’d come to love this place so much I would spend the rest of my life here I’d of said YOU must of been dropped on your head as a child,or eaten lead paint growing up..... guess you would have been right..

    r.... ....

It's a damn fine place to raise a family.

  7. P.... C....

    Great song

  8. M.... L....

Was born in the Muscle Shoals area, my daughter was born in Tupelo as we lived there for 10 yrs. So this tune rings sweet for me.

  9. K.... A....

What a bittersweet, awesome song. This song came to me at the perfect time of my life, I was getting out of a shitty relationship and realizing life went on, could even be BETTER. He never lived up to my memory... x

  14. J.... M....

100% legal to drink wine in a plastic cup in Mississippi. Just don’t get over .08...

  15. C.... K....

I wish he would play Tupelo and on the last "There's a girl down there" flow seamlessly into "She's as sweet as Tupelo honey..." (By Van Morrison) and play that out to a solo for everyone in the band and come back in at the last "there ain't no one from here that will follow me there..." and make it 12 minutes mashup of greatness.  And it's not like he's never covered Van before...

    C.... K....

@blamb25 , definitely rich in music history. Birthplace and childhood home of Elvis.

    C.... K....

I like the way you think.

    C.... K....

He had played in tupelo. Blue canoe

  16. P.... M....

23 people as of this writing appear to have their ears up their asses.

    P.... M....

Philip Mole 177 now I guess they don’t appreciate music ..

  17. K.... ....

Tupelo, Vampires, Something to Love: three songs I gotta play every day!

  18. J.... ....

I'm late to the party but grateful I got here

    J.... ....

    Welcome

    J.... ....

Go back in his catalog & listen to his stuff w the Drive By Truckers. You're welcome

  19. d.... ....

Has an Eagles sound to it to me

    d.... ....

Never made the association, but damn if you're not right. I was  a huge Eagles fan in the '70s, not for the hits, but for the low-key B-siders that had this same vibe.

    d.... ....

Chord and melody-wise, it's the "there ain't no one from here" that lines up with "there ain't no way" (to hide your lyin' eyes).
I heard the same thing! (A different key but same chord shapes.)

    d.... ....

    @R Davis ..that Am
Set right up just like Glen Frye!!!

    d.... ....

I agree with the Eagles sound.......but....... On some of his songs I also hear a bit of Jackson Brown.

  21. G.... T....

Is this a great country/Americana song or what?????? Hell, i'm reaching for a drink as i'm singing along................what do you think!

    G.... T....

He is ok thats about it. Dudes from down the road i know who he is.

    G.... T....

@Samuel Walkingstick john is from down the road or Jason if we where to ask Jason who is better at it all Jason would say john moreland

    G.... T....

@Saint Jeffrey Gunnells what makes you think that lol? What song are you referring to that is so much better than evan felker or boland? He opens for them not the other way around. And what do you mean "better at it all"?? He isn't groundbreaking. He is good but he cant write like felker or boland.

    G.... T....

@Saint Jeffrey Gunnells are you a musician? What better at it all are you talking about? You must like to argue. But yeah they are in town a lot. I used to watch the troubadours when they were bouncing around playing these hole in the wall bars. They write about the place i am from...Cherokee county. I know who they all are and moreland is good but not the talent that the others are.

    G.... T....

@Saint Jeffrey Gunnells also it different strokes for different folks. I like the way he moreland picks but im a musician. But it takes a lot of practice to do what he is doing. He is a good picker and his vocals are mediocre. Well most of these red dirt bands are around town quite a bit when they are just starting out. Im from tahlequah and they have a festival that the best red dirt bands go to every year its called medicine stone and if you like red dirt you should check it out. Its a small town and i grew up on that river.

  22. M.... B....

So good. Very refreshing to hear some real country/americana

  23. D.... M....

    CHINGA, Me gusta tupelo

  24. S.... S....

    Excellent. Just great music.

  25. t.... ....

The only song that could make me want to google map Tupelo

    t.... ....

@Justin Ross, come on down, all are welcome!

    t.... ....

@Tupelo Honey I live in Tupelo, I mean its better than other places in Mississippi. But its still in Mississippi.

    t.... ....

@Lunelope Hardy , so do I. I've traveled the world, but Mississippi is still home. Even with all her faults she's been mighty good to me.

    t.... ....

Lunelope Hardy I think everyone hates the area they grow up in, I live in New Ulm, Minnesota it’s a love hate relationship with 6 feet of snow on the ground, and no sight of spring ever coming, negative temperatures yet and dreams of a place like where you live..

    t.... ....

Lunelope Hardy It's the center of the universe. My mom always told me that growing up. Heh he.

  26. C.... ....

Have the whole album on Vinyl! His music couldn't get better!

  27. N.... ....

    2 people cannot hear

  28. v.... j....

so far, right after if we were vampires, this one, tupelo, is my favorite song off this new album. cant wait to hear him perform it live. i think its going to be one of my top favs. right after, cigerettes and wine, streetlights, children of children and traveling alone.

    v.... j....

vj bart tupelo, hurricanes and hand grenades two best songs ever 💪😎

  29. J.... R....

This is the best song on the album

    J.... R....

I will give you that none of them can, have, or will touch Jason as a solo artist but saying that he was the best this, that, and the third during his time in DBT is a bit overstated.

    J.... R....

I can't figure out the 7 assholes who give it a thumbs down

    J.... R....

I always thought that DBT had 3 solid songwriters that made great albums together but i could hardly make it through a show... i'd of rather seen them play acoustic in concert... but their shows make for great driving music, they were just always so loud live for me to enjoy...

    J.... R....

Ed Wood I guess they were drunk and missed the thumbs up. Cause there is 14 now

    J.... R....

    agree 100%

  30. j.... c....
