Jason Isbell - Tour Of Duty Lyrics

I'm arriving on the day's last train.
Stepping on the platform, trying to see you through the rain.
I don't know the ways you've changed since I left,
And I really don't care.
I've done my tour of duty now I'm home and I ain't going anywhere.

I taught myself to tolerate the pain,
All the loneliness and boredom and the work I did in vain.
All the work we did in vain. Now I'm not the same as I was.
I've done my tour of duty now I'll try to do what a civilian does.

I promise not to bore you with my stories.
I promise not to scare you with my tears.
I never would exaggerate the glory.
I'll seem so satisfied here.

I've been eating like I'm out on bail.
Collard greens and chicken wings and oysters by the pail.
Eating oysters by the pail, making up for those lost days.
I've done my tour of duty now I'm going to put you in the family way.

We'll laugh like little children telling secrets.
Probably cry like old women drinking gin,
Because I've done my tour of duty now I'm home
And I ain't leaving here again.

I've done my tour of duty now I'm home and I ain't leaving here again.

BEST SONG I'VE EVER HEARD.... THANK YOU for making this, and I'm THANKFUL to be home. Semper Fi to all my brothers in arms that are home safe and sound. I'm home now, but I lost both hips and my left foot. Thank God for 5 East at Bethesda, MD Hospital, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center... God Bless you all and get home from that damn sand box soon enough.

Thank you so much for your service. That's an incredible sacrifice to make for all of us Americans. Sounds like you went through some intense trauma. Hope you are doing well now.

Thank you so much for posting Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit for us to enjoy. Isbell is a marker along the line of Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan and, yes, Bruce Springsteen.

    Great song, great artist.

Living through the funeral of your friend and singing with protestors outside gives you a insight few people should ever have to see. I was there as a sheriffs protection detail.Jason honored a GREAT young man and many more with this song. He really spoke for his generations America service persons!

The fact that he hasn't been there doesn't bother me. It amazes me. I feel that same shock that I felt when I found out that Johnny Cash had never been to prison. I may not ever understand how a man can write about these type of experiences from the third person, but I can tell you he got it right. The GWOT doesn't have nearly as many songs as some of our previous wars, but this is the truest one...this and EAS song!

Listened to this song over and over before I shipped, and found a lot of inspiration in it. Thanks, sincerely
