Jason Isbell - Songs That She Sang In The Shower Lyrics

On a lark, on a whim
I said “There's two kinds of men in this world and you're neither of them”
And his fist cut the smoke
I had an eighth of a second to wonder if he got the joke
In the car headed home
She asked if I had considered the prospect of living alone

With a steak held to my eye
I had to summon the confidence needed to hear her goodbye
And another brief chapter without any answers blew by

And the songs that she sang in the shower are stuck in my head
Like ‘Bring Out Your Dead,' ‘Breakfast In Bed'
And experience robs me of hope that she'll make it back home
So I'm stuck on my own
I'm stuck on my own

In a room by myself
Looks like I'm here with the guy that I judge worse than anyone else
So I pace, and I pray
And I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day

And the songs that she sang in the shower all ring in my ears
Like ‘Wish You Were Here,” How I wish you were here
And experience robs me of hope that you'll ever return,
So I breathe and I burn
I breathe and I burn

And the church bells are ringing for those who are easy to please
And the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the trees

And the songs that she sang in the shower are stuck in my mind
Like ‘Yesterday's Wine,' Like ‘Yesterday's Wine'
And experience tells me that I'll never hear them again
Without thinking of then, without thinking of then

  3. Gary Dupuis2

First time I heard this song was on public radio late at night and at that time, I was madly in love with someone I couldn't be with. Naturally, it made me think of her and I broke down. Tho I still feel a little sadness whenever I hear this song, I've largely gotten over her and have moved on.

  4. Calvin Lee

Jason and his band are so amazing and so underrated !! They should be top charters everywhere !!!!

Theres 2 kinds of men in this world and youre neither of them

  18. Kem Sorrell

    lovely🌹

  19. ljspaziani

Isbell once said that he and Amanda were watching 'The Theory of Everything' together (Stephen Hawking movie), and he casually said "Hon, would you still have loved me if I only had a couple of years to live when you met me?" and she said "Oh baby, you did only have a couple of years to live when I met you."

Saw them at Red Rocks last summer for the 4th time, if you ever have the chance, do not miss Isbell and the 400 Unit.

    Nicole Lynch

True words were never spoken! And I 110% agree, never miss a chance to see Isbell live.

    Scott Russell

Watching some of the old live videos of the Drive By Truckers I'd say she was right. He'd have been long gone by now. She saved his life, and he's said more than once that he knows it.

    Jennifer Beavers

❤️❤️❤️ this so much I have saw them twice SO SO damn great!!!!!!

    Ivan Bedell

Last summer my wife and I drove from Utah to Vail Colorado to see him there. He was great as usual. We have seen him several times and look forward to seeing Jason and Amanda again.

    J Williams

Thank god for sobriety and Jason Isbell.

I love Jason when I'm sober. But when I'm drunk he"s the greatest there's ever been.

  22. Michelle T

    He's not a songwriter, he's a story teller.

  23. Steve James

    Sound quality sucks.

  24. Patrick Hamrock

On a lark, on a whim
I said “There's two kinds of men in this world and you're neither of them” Some lines in songs you just live, they just get down inside your soul and become part of you. I lived this line 2 years ago, learned it like the hard lesson that it was.

    wncmtngirl

That's the thing about the hard lessons, isn't it? We never forget.

  28. Evan Skinner

It fascinates me that 90 people “disliked” this. 🙄

  29. johnny991965

    Pure quality.....

  32. Michael Garrity

And a great song recorded as the band did their sound checks in one of America's great music venues---The Taft Theater in Cincinnati!! God Jason Isbell is such a great musician and singer songwriter...he just keeps getting better... One of the best things that every happened to Jason---he got his ass booted from the Drive By Truckers---and meeting Amanda Shires--both things got him sober and saved his life to make this incredible music for us all to live by---god we need such wonderful music now more than ever!!!!

  45. Ish81

What does "the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the trees" mean? Such a wonderful song, just don't understand that line!

    Andrew Kling

    CO45422

Everyone wants to be higher up.

    grassflats2

Things always look better on the other side of the fence....but it's still frost, whether on the trees or on the ground.

  46. Dawn Monroe

Two years after our breakup, and 12 years together, I ran into an old mutual friend. He said Johnny told him on night when they were out at a bar, that it used to piss him off when I hummed and sang when I cleaned house and showered. He said he didn't know why it passed him off. He said he guessed I was in a good mood if I could wash dishes and sing. Then he said he noticed I didn't hum or sing towards the end, but he knows why I stopped and still can't figure out why it bothered him. And, he wonders why his new girlfriend doesn't hum or sing at all😕

  47. Chris Carter

You can certainly here the ryan adams influence here.

  48. Robert Null

At the end of the vid... the way the camera pans out to the empty venue and it was emphasized that they played it so well... for themselves. Because it was good.

    Lonnie Bruce

Yeah, that comment made me tear up. Thanks, I mean it.

  56. Brian Odegaard

    So good.

  57. Sonny Young

When Amanda 'tammy wynettes' him and breaks his heart he'll write an album of instant classics and will be the next George Jones.

  58. Ted Mac

    Whoa. That's heavy

  59. Teri Kress

The Taft is an amazing old theater and a fantastic place to see Jason Isbell. Somehow they seem to do each other justice.

I don't go gaga over much . I put this guy up there with the greats , Kris, Dylan , Townes , Waits , and other monster song writers . he has basically written my life story . at least the mistakes . can't wait to hear what's next .

    Thelegendhaha

    Dennis Roglin that’s awesome.

    Honey

I agree! Not many songs move me these days. They’re all trying to reinvent the wheel. But I love this kid! Makes me proud to be Southern.

    Jeremy Reed

    Completely agree!

  62. Sam Thornton

If a woman sings Willie Nelson's Yesterday's wine in the shower...you should marry her and never look back.

  66. brondman18

Hey y'all. I was interested in know what the cost of this video whould be ball park. I really like the aesthetic. I know it's also the artists/song etc, but well done. Love to get a video like this!

    john myers

+brondman18 This was just a sound check. They just decided to record it. I pretty sure that they didn't have to pay anybody to shoot the video.
Are you asking what it would it would cost to get a copy of the video, or what it would cost to shoot the video?

    brondman18

You nailed it.  I should be so lucky to get such a good video for no cost. I like it a lot

  67. EdD5

"And the church bells are ringing for those who are easy to please/
And the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the tree"

A poet who somehow makes a gut punch beautiful.

    Catherine S. Todd

+EdD5 : Beautiful description! You said so much with so few.

    WhiteRussianrock

This song's full of amazing poetry.

    In a room, by myself
Looks like I'm here with the guy that I judge worse than anyone else
So I pace, and I pray
And I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day

I'm not sure that could have been written by someone who wasn't recovering.

    Themistocles

"What is a poet? An unhappy person who conceals profound anguish in his heart but whose lips are so formed that as sighs and cries pass over them they sound like beautiful music." Soren Kierkegaard

    John Kase

Thanks man, thats gonna get me through today . . .

    George Hubbert

I have these lyrics tattooed on my arm....

  68. Jared Cox

This song is brilliant... I picture Isbell writing this song while in rehab and thinking about if Amanda Shires would still be waiting for him on the outside, but from his experience expecting that she would not still be there.

The lyrics are just spectacular from the opening about there are two types of men in this world and you are neither of them (basically calling the other dude a pussy and then getting punched for it)  then moving into his girl leaving him and having to "summon the confidence needed to hear her goodbye".

Leading to "another brief chapter without any answers moving by."   (how many of us have been there, wondering what happened? was it me? was it her? does it matter?  and realizing just another brief chapter without answers had moved by....)

And we all know once you've lost her.... she's gone... it's just the way it works out with the ones worth keeping... "and experience robs me of hope that you'll ever call home, so I'm stuck on my own, I'm stuck on my own."

Then the rehab lines...  "Looks like I'm here with a guy I judge worse than anyone else/ So I pace/ and I pray/ and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day"

"And the churchbells are ringing for those that are easy to please"   I won't share my thoughts on this one.. but it's a GREAT line...

And experience tells me that I'll never hear them again, without thinking of them...

ahhhh the song is just so poetic like most of isbell's songs you don't wanna ruin it by trying to explain it. lol

    Catherine S. Todd

+Jared Cox : what a beautiful interpretation of this song. Knocked my socks off, your comment and the lyrics and song. Explaining it didn't "ruin it" at all. Helped a lot of people understand it, I'm sure.

"Looks like I'm here with a guy I judge worse than anyone else/ So I pace/ and I pray/ and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day"

    Jason Wachenschwanz

Jared Cox love your review man.

  69. vee j bee.

One of my favorites by Isbell. I feel the lyrics "and the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the trees". I know what they mean and it is true. We all want to be "up there".

  70. hemlockt suckaz

I'm pretty sure that @JimboHart is the first bass player that I've seen to lay an SVT cabinet on its side.

  71. Matthew Murillo

    Can't talk......brain thought!!!

    Annette Grasso

    Exactly!

  72. Zachary Steffes

"Looks like I'm here with a guy I judge worse than anyone else/ So I pace/ and I pray/ and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day"

Can't even begin to count how many times I listened to this during the first year of my own sobriety. For that, I have Isbell's words to thank.

    vee j bee.

@Zachary Steffes my son is in recovery, 4 years and I listen to these lyrics and imagine what he feels everyday. But I am not an addict, I still feel the words in my soul. I guess they speak to my own demons.

  77. Patrick Strain

Was that a Summer Song (Joe Satriani) lick in the beginning?

    missmymountain

Indeed.  On a flat top too.

Patrick Strain You know he's a great guitar player when he goofs off by playing Satch !!!

    He's just amazing.

  81. go1095go1095

This is a sound check....a freaking sound check and he sings better then most artists on a good night with everything set up properly!

    Steven Eastwood

Speaking of sound checks. When they played here in Lagrange Ga 2 years ago. He played his entire set list for his sound check. He stayed until 3 in the morning playing and fell in stories.

  82. Eric Olson

Such a great talent! Truly unique!

  83. Rob Luskey

A fantastic song from a brilliant album.

  84. Phillip Cray

It was a station out of Cincinnati that introduced me to the music of Jason Isbell, thanks WNKU

    Jay Elliott

    Man I miss WNKU.

  85. John McAleer

Boss just turned me on to this group.  Diggin it, the guitar in this in this song sounds very close to the Pink Floyd song Poles Apart off the Division Bell album.

    mothertheresalovesan

You mean you listen to this because "the man" does?

    John McAleer

Well my boss is a man, but if this song would have sucked I would have told him I thought so.

    Hughie Gibson

Your boss has fantastic taste in music

    John McAleer

    @Hughie Gibson That he does.

    Sean Heissinger

His lead player is so good. Always makes me think of Gilmour in the fact that every single note that he plays has purpose. No filler ever.

  86. Gordon Harvey

    The new Dylan!!!

    Doug Bennett

    So  very true.

    Todd Malmberg

I liken him to John Prine.

  87. James Noland

    very cool

  88. Charlie Johnson

    Incredible song.

  89. Calvin Lee

This guy is amazing !!!!! I just stumbled upon his music last night and I haven't found a single song I don't like yet.

    Paula Justice

I heard Jason for the 1st time 7 years ago at Knuckleheads in Kansas City .. captivated instantly! I had just lost my closest & dearest friend .. my brother .. in a car accident, and subsequently my 30 yr marriage .. and his words soothed while also allowing me to let it all out. Love him as much today as then! :)

    Jeff Kearne

So happy that you found him. He is amazing as a performer AND as a writer.

    8ackbiter

I first encountered him as a solo artist in Nashville in 2015. My wife is a huge country music fan (I'm not) and dragged me around the Hall of Fame, which I loved. In one part there is an Americana section, and there was a small exhibit saying how Jason Isbell had picked up Song of the Year for Come Pick Me Up. It also mentioned his time with the Drive By Truckers, whose music I was familiar with. That night I looked him up on YouTube and was blown away. This song was the second one of his I played. Two months later he brought him band over to the UK and I dragged my wife along. She was blown away by his performance. He's been back to the UK since and we saw him/ them again in another memorable show. Hopefully they'll be back again soon to tour the new album.
