Jason Isbell - Flying Over Water Lyrics
From the sky, we look so organized and brave
Walls that make up barricades and graves
Daddy's little empire, built by hands and built by slaves
From the sky, we look so organized and brave
Drunken tears and tugging at your skirt
If only you could tell me then, what part of you got hurt
In the heat, I saw you rising from the dirt
Take my hand baby, we're over land
I know flying over water makes you cry
Where's that liquor cart, maybe we shouldn't start
But I can't for the life of me say why
From the sky the highway's straight as it could be
And still, somehow, those ditches took the better part of me
From the sky, the highway's straight as it could be
Take my hand baby, we're over land
I know flying over water makes you cry
Been in the sky so long, seems like the long way home
But I can't for the life of me say why
Do we leave our love behind?
Would we leave our love behind?
Did we leave our love behind?
Would we leave our love behind?
Take my hand baby, we're over land
I know flying over water makes you cry
Been in the sky so long, seems like the long way home
But I can't for the life of me say why
Did we leave our love behind?
Did we leave our love behind?

Jason Isbell Flying Over Water Comments
This song is about Jason comforting and calming a lady in his life. It’s so soothing.
Comforting to know I’m not the only one who is scared of flying over water. Absolutely does my head in. Where’s that liquor cart ? 🙁
Name someone better than this guy... I'll wait
Like it
Still loving this song, this guy.
I bet he also has a real affinity for Townes. As in Townes Van Zandt..& if you're unaware of who he was I strongly urge you to find out. Jason's way up near.
Christian Walz just have to hope he never becomes as self destructive as Townes.
Slim Jim Great point. Though I do have a sort of rare recording called "Last Rights" where Townes is being interviewed in between each showcased song he shared about how at that point he had gained a much better handle on his unrelenting depression of which he was arguably held hostage by, & had been within years of solid redemption. From that I gathered & guessed he had been strictly sober (nevermind the coffee & smokes) for at least 5 years.
Townes basically died from DT. So he never kicked it sadly
Definitely in the same league as Bruce and Bob. Really glad he's sobered up, I want this guy to be around for a long long time.
Dude! Do NOT change! This is fantastic stuff...your progression has been wonderful to listen to! Thank you for being so talented. - SWW
Amazing Singer/Songwriter/Musician !
Best songwriter / musician ever. Rivals Springsteen or Dylan in my opinion.
@officialcrabsomatic What do you think of the newest album?
yes he is. too political but great
@marcustongue123
Something More Than Free is very good. However I just like the overall theme of Southwestern more. There's more pain, heartache, recovery, sadness in it. It's amazing songwriting - both albums.
+officialcrabsomatic When people ask what his music is like I like to say imagine if Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, and Duane Allman had a kid! :)
"from the sky we look so organized and brave, walls that make up barricades and graves"
where's that liquor cart?
So damn good!
How more people haven't liked or viewed this is amazing.
Brilliant.
