Jason Isbell - Cumberland Gap Lyrics

There's an answer here, if I look hard enough
There's a reason why I always reach for the harder stuff
It wasn't my daddy's way
He was down in the mines all day
I know he wanted more than mouths to feed and bills to pay

Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole
Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole

I ain't cut out for war, unless I know what I'm fighting for
And there's nothing here but churches, bars, and grocery stores
Ain't much money in the old-time mandolin
So I cash my check and I drink 'til I'm on my ass again

Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole
Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole
Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole

Remember when we could see the mountain's peak?
The sparkle off the amphibole?
Like a giant golden eagle's beak
Now they say no one wants the coal

I thought about moving away
But what would my mama say?
I'm all that she has left and I'm with her every day
As soon as the sun goes down
I find my way to the Mustang Lounge
And if you don't sit facing the window
You could be in any town

Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole
Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole
Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole
Maybe the Cumberland Gap just swallows you whole

The drums on the recording really roped me in that speed, that was never replicated. Really made the song.

This crosses well into Springsteen territory for greatness. When you write songs from the perspective of the common people at a point in time you're documenting history. This is the stuff epic songs are made of... Listen to the lyrics! This is for every Blue colar worker in small town America who didn't get out before the great escape to the big cities.

I ain’t cut out for war, unless I know what I’m fighting for. American brave young folk are being sold on fighting Iran, so Trump can avoid answering for some of the crimes he committed. My wish for those young soldiers is they have the wisdom to realize sometimes refusing to fight requires more bravery than fighting.

    This man is IT.....notice

  5. A.... K....

He made look up what amphibole is, and now knowing that makes the song even better

  6. J.... H....

Flatt and Scruggs did it a lot better

  7. J.... S....

It doesn't get better than him at this time, his lyrics and guitar is just insane...….plus he has his wife as a killer violinist! What?! Such a killer combo

So jason isbell said " Jesus would not have voted for Donald Trump" SO jason do you really think you speak for Jesus?

    M.... N....

He does as much as any of us who see Trump for what he is...the Anti-Christ.

    M.... N....

Jesus wouldn't put faith in any man.

    M.... N....

Read the New Testament - do YOU think Jesus would like Trump?

    M.... N....

Honestly I couldn’t care less about Jesus. What I can say is no sane person would vote for Trump.

This is great, and Jason is one of my favorite artists. And while his sad songs are fantastic, I do wish he’d write more rockers like this and Super 8.

Who is heading to the Mustang Lounge right about now?

  11. B.... O....

I'm from Cumberland Gap TN and I can tell you this song tells the truth. This area is crap and it traps most everyone that is born here.

    Hey Remo,
I listened to Jason daily for about 6 months, yet I was blown away each of 2 times seeing Jason & band LIVE.

    R.... ....

When will he be at the Ryman, again?

    R.... ....

In my opinion, the 2nd best concert venue in the world, 2nd only to the Royal Albert Hall!!
