Jason Isbell - Codeine Lyrics

If there's one thing I can't stand
It's this bar and this cover band
Trying to fake their way through 'Castles Made of Sand'.
That's one thing I can't stand.

If there's one thing I can't take
It's the sound that a woman makes
About five seconds after her heart begins to break.
That's one thing I can't take.

She should be home by now but she ain't.
I should've gone by now but I cain't.
One of my friends has taken her in and given her codeine.
One of my friends has taken her in and given her codeine.

Them eyes was big as stars
When I saw you behind the bar.
I guess that's the way to keep on smilin' where you are.
But girl them eyes was big as stars.

It sounds funny when you say my name.
It's like you're chewing on a foreign thing
And you won't get to sleep 'till dawn if it don't rain.
It sounds so funny when you say my name.

You oughta come home tonight but you won't.
I wish we knew how to fight but we don't.
One of your friends has taken you in and given you codeine.
One of your friends has taken you in and given you codeine.

Darlin' I'm not one to judge
But if I was then I'd say you don't look so good.
Got no answers of my own
But with you gone, this place looks bigger than it should.

If there's two things that I hate
It's having to cook and trying to date.
Busting ass all day to play 'hurry up and wait.
That's a few things that I hate.

If I call when I ain't drunk
This old boat'll still be sunk
'Cause one of my friends has taken her in and given her codeine.
One of my friends has taken her in and given her codeine.

One of my friends has taken her in and given her codeine.
One of my friends has taken her in and given her codeine.

Jason Isbell Codeine Comments

Sounding great as the song. Local Chitown friend Jared Rabin can sound like this with his band. Maybe a couple of mine if I ever play or record with a band again. A good excuse passed out on codeine.

  2. B.... C....

"It sounds so funny when you say my name" pretty much sums it up for me. Thanks Jason

  3. K.... W....

First intro to the drive by truckers came in 2002 by Mark Lyvers on WUSC-FM 90.5. Since then he, Mark aka UNCLE GRAHAM, left us for heaven and we think of him when Jason sings. This guy keeps it about as real as possible. This isn't reject rock as is so called county music is today. I'm going to enjoy it while it last because when I'm gone it'll just keep playing on! Peace Out!

  4. B.... K....

    My favorite song

  5. J.... A....

He is being so blunt. He cant stand his own band. Such brutal honesty only found in southern country music.

  6. p.... ....

If theres one thing stand is the SHITE they play on the radio these days.

  7. S.... S....

  12. M.... G....

This is now one of Jason's earlier songs---before he did Southeastern and he has gone on this tremendous trajectory with Something More Than Free and Nashville Sound have continued. Now looking forward to what comes next from Jason and Company. This is one of my faves of the earlier songs. Good stuff----glad he will still do it at shows from time to time now....

  13. H.... W....

Godam Lyrical Genius. Way to underrated for way to long

  14. J.... M....

  16. D.... C....

nice to see someone prove John Moreland wrong when he said that "Nobody Gives a Damn About Songs Anymore" (which is a great song, by the way).

  17. G.... M....

When John Prine gave you awesome reviews, gave you an ear shot... OMG! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your style, talents and unique lyrics...

  20. D.... G....

I love this song so much! The lyrics and music are perfect together. It's on repeat for me :)

  25. M.... C....

His voice sounds a little like Steve Forbert but with that country twang!!!

  26. C.... B....

Like your music, should have kept your mouth shut in the Vanity Fair article!

    C.... B....

Maybe you ought to either expand on that idjitry or keep your trap shut.

  27. D.... S....

He takes a piece of every style of music and puts it all in one in his own way. My favourite artist by far. And there are a lot. Way to go Jason. Keep it coming

  28. C.... S....

If you like this, listen to the KEXP performance!!

  29. W.... W....

Isbell and this band are the shit, I'm so glad he got it all together and kicking ass there are many talented artist from his part of the country I'm glad he made it.

  30. L.... S....

I could listen to this song all day. Amazing talent. Love. Love. Love.

  31. d.... w....

sounds like "wagon wheel" to me....

  32. R.... E....

    Killa track

  33. M.... L....

This is a beautiful song 😘😘😘

  34. T.... ....

It's just my opinion, but...i found these lyrics very unpleasant and uninspiring! And the rymes...oh, like they're written by 10 years old with naughty mind and untalanted head! It's an offence for the good drug "Codeine" itself! ;)) 1000 times more i prefer the song with the same name ("Codeine"), but by Trampled by Turtles!! Now, that's a great song!!! But, that's just me. No offend to anybody! Greetings from Bulgaria! :)

    T.... ....

The lyrics are perfect. Thanks 400 Unit

    T.... ....

Psyromantic TwinPeaks maybe it's the language barrier/culture? The beauty of his lyrics are that they are so simple, but speak volumes. The little part "that's the way you keep on smiling where you are" has shades of southern Baptist songs that you don't get if you don't know the South.

    T.... ....

TwinPeaks At Winter cool opinion my man- music is subjective :^)

    T.... ....

    _"Margaret Hess"_
Nah, your typical dumbass who can't tell the difference between "using big words" and "saying something meaningful." Saying profoud things, simply is an art, and why Hemingway > Faulkner.

    T.... ....

Im glad your not responsible for what we listen to or read, you would think among your manners the ability to SYFM and keep your hateful oppinions based on lack of quality of life ( Your own im refeing to ) and keep them to yourself. My guess it struck a chord that made YOU not so flattering to yourself, vanity is not lacking from your first impression on me. Go figure, like anyone here GAFF about what you think?

  35. M.... K....

Wow a song that says something! No wonder it's not on the radio ...

    M.... K....

depends on where you live I guess. I first heard this on the radio

    M.... K....

Check out "Birmingham Mountain Radio" (online) Sundays from 10am - 2pm (CST) and you'll heard great music like Jason. The show is "Reg's Coffee House and has been running for ~19 years. From 8am - 10am is "Black Jacket Radio" also. At 7pm Sundays is local Alabama music. I think you'll love all three programs

    M.... K....

has anyone heard ryan bingham on the radio? anywhere?

    M.... K....

Radio? What is this word "radio"?

    M.... K....

The song is on Sirius Outlaw country station a classic

  36. W.... z....

    amazing, hands down.

I've been there too brother. It ain't worth it. Stay strong man

  41. j.... m....

It may be a similar time as wagon wheel but no one owns timing ya know.Just downloaded this album.

    j.... m....

I love Old Crow, but I like Isbell more, and Isbell doesn't rip off people. And dont download the album, download ALL of his albums or better yet, be like me and get them on vinyl. You will thank me later.

    j.... m....

    of course vinyl is better!

    j.... m....

It's a "style" that doesn't really belong to either artists mentioned here. Just be happy it was wrestled to popularity? I am.

  42. w.... h....

49 days since my club has heard wagon wheel....keep it straight Jason.

  43. S.... R....

Real country music is dead. Real country musicians don't put gell in their fucking hair

    S.... R....

+Shane Robinson Wow, what an insightful comment!

    S.... R....

+David Millard I just can't the CRAP that's coming out Nashville these days but hey I know a lot of MS Delta blues musicians and they say over seas they get more respect over there then in the states. Yall respect great music.

    S.... R....

+Karol Nawrocki hey if you like Rascal Flatts and that garbage then by all means enjoy. WOW

    S.... R....

Good thing he isn't country, then.

    S.... R....

I actually like Johnny Cash I was just using that as an analogy... Albeit bad. I was prob drunk when i wrote comment above but I think Jason Isbell is great has sold a lot of albums singing about real life. Sorry if i have offended I think he's great.

  44. D.... R....

I'm an old bastard , I just got into this guy . I'm as blown away as the first time I heard Springsteen . do not ever call him country . too good for that bubblegum crap label

    D.... R....

I posted some unreleased demos on my youtube page. I would suggest checking those out as well, especially Smoke & Cinders. Guy is an amazing artist. Glad you finally got on board.

    D.... R....

I know this reply is from 2 years ago but if you love the music of Bruce Springsteen and Jason Isbell you owe it to yourself to check out John Moreland, absolutely incredible singer/songwriter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cniD94MqoCg

    D.... R....

    BubblegumShallow absolutely.

    D.... R....

He's giving the country music industry the finger while showing them how it's done.

    D.... R....

Dennis Roglin. I'm a geezer myself. I'm a big John Prine fan.I just saw this guy on Austin City Limits the other night. He blew me away with white mans world. On my faves list now.

  45. C.... W....

How anyone could dislike this is beside me

    C.... W....

I could argue in favor of either like or dislike. I like the song, I dislike the reality behind it.

  46. s.... s....

    Jason is so Perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    s.... s....

@sandra sword Just saw him live tonight and he played this. He put on one of the best shows I've ever seen.

    s.... s....

    I am jellous !!!!!!!

  47. R.... T....

    Muito bom este álbum.

  48. J.... ....

My favorite song off of this brilliant album.

  49. J.... W....

i'm so glad we have a genre called "americana" to classify this so it doesn't have to go in the same category as Luke Bryan and Miranda buttfucking Lambert

    J.... W....

    Except he hates America

    J.... W....

Luke Bryan is not country, but Miranda is. Plus go listen to her album: The Weight of These Wings. That's a traditional country album. I think Jason falls somewhere between Americana, Traditional/Outlaw Country, and Bluegrass, but not country pop.

    J.... W....

    Agree on Luke Bryan
    Disagree on Miranda

    J.... W....

A lot of positive responses here to "buttfucking." Guess I'm in the right place

  50. p.... e....

    Brilliant song
Love Jason's writing - he gets better and better
    Cool

  51. D.... S....

one of the best songs to come along in a long time ....
    best american song writer today

  52. T.... H....

You oughta come home tonight but you won't.
I wish we knew how to fight but we don't.

  53. M.... ....

What an excellent song! Much better than the crap you hear on country radio!

  54. I.... ....

... because Dylan never "ripped off" anyone. Excellent observation.

  55. j.... ....

one thing I cant stand, is people that rip off Dylan, or O.C.M.S, claim it as their own, then bitch about other peoples music. Other than that, this rip off of "wagon wheel" isnt bad

    j.... ....

    You're a dumbass

  56. o.... ....

Im from NZ and have known and been a fan of Ryan Adams for yeeeaaars I'll admit I didn't know Jason Isbell until I saw him open for Ryan Adams but a lot of people seemed to know him from drive by truckers. Ryan Adams has come to NZ heaps and the last two shows he played here sold out so obviously us kiwis know he is alive

  57. T.... B....

He seems to do this all the time! Whenever I look at his shows, they are all in tiny places. So jealous!

  58. o.... ....

I was lucky enough to discover Jason Isbell when he open for Ryan Adams in a little town in New Zealand, to be honnest wasn't expecting much from a for me an unknown opener in fact I was just gona wait at the bar until he had finished but so glad I ended up discovering such an awesome performer

    o.... ....

My uncle (California expat living in NZ for last 30+ years) drove a few hours to see Moby Grape back in the '60s. Cops were hassling folks in the parking lot so they went in early and saw an unknown opener by the name of Jimi Hendrix.

  59. B.... P....

I'm feeling this living this real life no holds barred!

  60. W.... B....

dbt's still pretty good, but they seriously lost something when he left them. all 3 of isbell's albums have been good, and each one is better than the last. keep at it son.

  61. M.... ....

yeah... where's the station? Ive never heard anyone but DBT fans mention Jason Isbell....

  62. b.... e....

check out the bottle rockets 1000$ car

  63. T.... M....

I hope none of my friends ever take her in and give her codeine, she's allergic, she'll die...

  64. J.... C....

With "Sirens Of The Ditch" and " Here We Rest", Jason just may be the greatest contemporary songwriter on the planet!

  65. s.... ....

Has everyone written a song about codeine? Maybe I'll give it a try since I do the dance every day.

  66. J.... P....

    @timbrooks64 Me Too. Awesome Music

  67. T.... B....

I did the same thing after watching Lettermen. Wow what a great band and a very relaxed yet extremly powerful performance.

  68. l.... ....

I heard them for the first time on Letterman last night, Novemeber 4, 2011. I watch Letterman on my DVR and usually hit STOP/Erase as soon as the musical number starts. But these guys grabbed my attention and I listened to the whole song and then REWINDed and listened to it several more times.

  69. d.... ....

ya'll be jealous, cause I'm going to Jason and Mcmurtry, go figure...

    d.... ....

I saw Jason with Richard Thompson opening for him. I win.

  70. J.... C....

I hear a lot of Graham Parsons in him, he's one of the new greats. DBT can't have 'em all.

  71. j.... ....

i loved him in the truckers, i actually started crying the first time i heard "outfit". being a southern man that song just hit me in the soul. i love him on his own, it just gives me more music that is worth listening too!!!!!

  72. W.... B....

@nsofast He's a pretty big ole boy. They feed 'em good in north Alabama.

  73. l.... ....

    @nsofast Where is the station?

  74. A.... C....

    Excellent. Isn't it?

  75. j.... o....

he's onto something. This stuff is great!

  76. J.... M....

this has to be the best song i've heard in a long time!

  77. f.... ....

I can hear his buddy JTE's influence rubbing off here.

  78. c.... ....

Thank you Jason. Highlight of my day this album coming out. There isn't a singer/songwriter you can name ever that Jason can't stand shoulder to shoulder with. Brilliant soul.

  79. S.... F....

Great fucking song really dig it. Thank you.

  80. D.... S....

sounds so funny when you say my name

  81. b.... ....

    this is a great tune

  82. a.... ....

Sounds great....well worth the wait I'm sure....See ya at the Earl

  83. l.... ....

This will be out on vinyl, too. The vinyl package includes a bonus 7-inch with two unreleased songs.

  84. m.... ....

    LOVE IT!

  85. s.... ....

    Great song.

  86. R.... E....

Nice old timey arangement. Looking forward to the album. Come to Minneapolis soon.
