Jars Of Clay - Oh My God Lyrics

Oh my God, look around this place
Your fingers reach around the bone
You set the break and set the tone
Flights of grace, and future falls
In present pain
All fools say, "Oh my God"

Oh my God, Why are we so afraid?
We make it worse when we don't bleed
There is no cure for our disease
Turn a phrase, and rise again
Or fake your death and only tell your closest friend
Oh my God.

Oh my God, can I complain?
You take away my firm belief and graft my soul upon your grief
Weddings, boats and alibis
All drift away, and a mother cries

Liars and fools; sons and failures
Thieves will always say
Lost and found; ailing wanderers
Healers always say
Whores and angels; men with problems
Leavers always say
Broken hearted; separated
Orphans always say
War creators; racial haters
Preachers always say
Distant fathers; fallen warriors
Givers always say
Pilgrim saints; lonely widows
Users always say
Fearful mothers; watchful doubters
Saviors always say

Sometimes I cannot forgive
And these days, mercy cuts so deep
If the world was how it should be, maybe I could get some sleep
While I lay, I dream we're better,
Scales were gone and faces light
When we wake, we hate our brother
We still move to hurt each other
Sometimes I can close my eyes,
And all the fear that keeps me silent falls below my heavy breathing,
What makes me so badly bent?
We all have a chance to murder
We all feel the need for wonder
We still want to be reminded that the pain is worth the thunder

Sometimes when I lose my grip, I wonder what to make of heaven
All the times I thought to reach up
All the times I had to give
Babies underneath their beds
Hospitals that cannot treat all the wounds that money causes,
All the comforts of cathedrals
All the cries of thirsty children - this is our inheritance
All the rage of watching mothers - this is our greatest offense

Oh my God
Oh my God
Oh my God

Jars Of Clay Oh My God Comments
  1. .... ....

This song has always been about the writers anger at God, anger at religion, anger at people, anger at the world, and circles back to God....it is alright to be angry at God, He can handle it... Ppl think He wont come back angry, Oh I so disagree...

I've been watching/ listening to this video for years. Probably since it came out in 2007. I have the song on CD, but I just love your video, especially the part with the candle. Just want to tell you how well you made this video!

  21. N.... G....

This poignant song is, and will always be my favorite Jar's song of all time. Tears, chills and all the feels every time I listen to it. Praise God for His forgiveness! <3

  22. B.... H....

Bless you all against the sin of disacknowledgement. If anything we need to do is acknowledge The One True Creator daily. Fulfill His Will, Only. We got this right? =]

  23. M.... P....

This is truly an amazing video you have put together.  Some of my favorite pics from art study here, and the application to the music is profound.  You are really hearing the artist.  I have this song on a playlist and come back to it frequently as it explores all the reasons people use or abuse this phrase, and of course the authors honesty in his own calling out to our Lord in the end.  We find ourselves in here somewhere, and see something bigger.

    M.... P....

You got it, exactly, I think!

  24. J.... H....

As long as you know that there is one God and he is all of our God even if they are not save or believe in him. he still is our God ones that don't believe in him and past will be judge by God our God I understand what you mean but people are saying My God now days like he is your God and i don't want to offend anyone else with there belief. People need to know He is not just your God he is everyone God .. but i like the song

  25. J.... H....

I like your music Jars of Clay but when say oh my God sounds to me its your God. You have to remember even if those out there don't believe He is God to all of us Jesus Christ did not die on the cross because you could go around and say my God so you don't offend others. everyone in the world belongs to God but only ones that truly have faith in Jesus Christ our lord and savior will be saved and believe in his words his teachings. He does want you going around saying he is my God because that is very wrong. You need to tell them he is everyone God Please don't forget that God Bless and Amen

    J.... H....

Oh my god why has thou forsaken me .Oh my god why are you so far off .

    J.... H....

I talked to Dan hassaltein and he said it's about how he uses the phrase, how people and how everyone uses the phrases

    J.... H....

+chrisattigliato1 I like that it's really deep JOC are wanna of my favorites they're lyrics are so deep and visual .The break in this song is so good

    J.... H....

+Jeremy Hable I understand your point, however, don't forget that the basis of faith is the personal relation with God. You can find God's people crying out to God in a personal way all through Bible.

    J.... H....

+Jeremy Hable LOL you really have an ear for music.

  26. V.... A....

sometimes Im wondering about their lyrics.

  27. T.... R....

Love this song. What a powerful video, too. This song makes a strong socio-religious statement in such a painful prayer.  Thanks for uploading.

  28. A.... J....

Nothing like this song when I need a good cry. ;)

  29. F.... ....

I heard that Christians used to fight for better prison conditions, now it seems they leave it to the mega-dude leaders to just hand out their books to nonviolent people locked in cages for having plants.

    F.... ....

Not true from my experience....there are many men and women who invest there time treasure and talents by going to prisons, meeting with inmates personally and in groups, thy also meet with the staff, congressmen and local community leaders regarding many matters.

    F.... ....

FF, Kairos Prison Ministry...look it up. powerful stuff. I've seen with my own eyes the power of the Spirit at work through this ministry...former white supremacists and former black panthers hug in the name of Christ.

  30. v.... ....

Hey guys, if you loved this song try looking up Dustin Smith.
He is a Christian worship songwriter and he is teh worship leader of my church when he's not traveling the world going to other churches.

  31. S.... L....

Not Christian or religious in any way but I do love Jars of Clay songs because they speak to the heart and soul.

    S.... L....

I read that, and I read 1:Cor 9:19-23 as well. But do you still not agree that it is strange to say that the litmus test of true Christianity is "does this person like the same thing, that I, Morris Buel, likes?"

I fear to compare our likes, lest I be eternally condemned. You carry a heavy burden, sir. I would not wish it for myself.

    S.... L....

@awkwardsaw no, the litmus test is the word of God, not me.

    S.... L....

The first problem here is that you are being hyper-legalistic with the passages. Those scriptures are not to literally say that believers and nonbelievers can not like the same things. If this was the case, there would be the logical inconsistency of how conversion would work. unbelievers are said to be wooed by God, being drawn to Him. However, in this state, they are still considered an unbeliever. Rather, the scripture is a general rule. General rules are allowed to be broken and still be considered true. As an example, it is a general rule that a person who is too lazy to get out of bed in the morning to be poorer. Are there exceptions? Absolutely! Are there many exceptions? Absolutely, but nevertheless, the general rule is still true. (Proverbs, for example, is full of general rules.)

Secondly, you bear a logical inconsistency when you set the standard of converting people to be a Christian band and at the same time, denounce the band for being liked by non-Christians. The inconsistency is that people who are going to be converted are always non-Christians. Therefore, there is nothing abnormal that this band has a non-Christian following. You may argue that some of these non-believers who follow the band have been doing so for a long time and may likely never be converted. Which would be true. But the important part is that the band is trying.

Another little point is that a single comment on a large world is not sufficient evidence to claim that the band fails at converting, especially if these unconverted people may one day accept Christ.

Secondly (or thirdly?), you are absolutely right in saying that a band that doesn't bear any fruit has a problem with it. However, there are many other potentials that could get in the way of that besides the band being 'Christian' or not. Perhaps the music doesn't fit the audience. (Like a banjo player in . . . some city that hates banjo players. It doesn't mean the poor banjo player (let's name him Joe!) is a failure at his message.) There can be many factors at work.

I hope this helps clear things up. I wrote this in no anger, and hope it wasn't received that way. Enjoy your day.

    Best Wishes.

    S.... L....

@Elwood M. Buel Hi, there! This is a very belated response, but I would have no idea of how to know where you are in your faith journey as of then or now. This song has much desperate longing in it, but yet it yearns for the right thing - for a God that can fulfill that longing. I pray that all Christians, including you and I and Jars of Clay, can all hold the mystery of Christ's Passion and Resurrection both in our mortal bodies and eternal souls. One thing is for sure; we will all find out one day where we allowed Him to take over and where we only allowed Him to fit in. God have mercy on us all as He always has and will have, unfathomably.

This song makes me cry so much. I love it so much, and honestly i think you really have to go through the stuff in this song to understand it. Otherwise it does sound weird. Idk what the fight was about but this song is very interpretive. However, this song gives me chills and tears every time i listen to it and i cant even play it because its so powerful.

a very powerful message, I was awakened at 2:30 am and took a shower and got ready to work (at home on this laptop) and I was led to this video. I love this band, they always speak to me and I have been crying out for a way to reach the father and son that are in my life. In Jesus' Precious name I petition you Lord. Make your mercy and grace shine upon them. I love them both so much and I know I cannot save them myself. I am broken on my knees...hear my prayer.

religion ruined the best relationship i ever had,,,,just like what u said, we knew what each other was thinking before it was said sometimes..... there was a real connection, it took years to get over the depth of this relationship, the love burned like an addictive drug under my skin. now, i have moved on but know an old guilt based religion ruined things. i am thinking our connection came from our spirits knowing each other from other lives, it explains the instant connection we had

sounds like she may need to to seek him just as much as the rest of us. You should not stop your search because she dumped you .You are called even as she is behod I stand at the door and knock said Jesus you open the door. and the attraction to her you have could very well be Christ Jesus in Her. Dont forsake Him because of how you feel embrace Him ask Him to show Himself to you. pick up a Bible and read. The gospel of John is a good place to start. I'll be praying for you to find the path.

  72. S.... ....

I was listening to another Jars of Clay song, but then I had to click on this one because of the weeping angel. That which holds the image of an angel becomes itself an angel so now I can't blink. O.O

@arkpizarro No atheist believes it's all from random. We understand incredibly little about the universe. When we say "Oh m god", I believe we simply have a feeling of being part of something incredibly big beyond our comprehension. Our feeble minds call this god but I believe the truth must be much more special and extraordinary than we can even begin to imagine. Even if nothing happens when you die (which I don't believe) I would have been proud to be part of something so grand and loving.

  76. T.... ....

Making me cry tears of joy :'')

  77. H.... N....

    Epic. Oh my God.

  78. h.... ....

What's the deal with all these crappy adverts??? It really ruins things when you have a music video on your playlist.

  79. j.... ....

@youlovelost13 I guess my view on Youtube is a source of Information and Entertainment. So when I look at comments I expect those things, not pointless arguments. Don't get me wrong I also found myself in such comments, but I don't continues in such.

I respect your views and points, But I hope Youtubers will also share there knowledge and beliefs without belittling others.

  80. y.... ....

@jacknumber13000 YouTube has a comments section for a reason. It's human nature to argue about things that are important to us. Perhaps no one will have a complete reversal of their position, but people may advance their knowledge and beliefs by noting salient points in the other person's argument. I know it's happened to me on internet forums - maybe even on YouTube. If you're only here for the music, don't scroll past the video. =)

  81. j.... ....

@ShotzMaster117 This conversation that you two have, is also a realm of delusion and stupidity. No matter how much you guy's fight over your beliefs and your rights of Freedom of Speech, this conversation will never go anywhere. No one ever converts over an argument on YouTube(Especially Atheist Vs Christians). All arguments are a waste of time.
-Those who bring attention to themselves online are in a realm of delusion and stupidity.
-So just listen to the music, or your just wasting your time.

  82. o.... ....

@ShotzMaster117 This has become an exercise in futility. I'm really not sure you're going to understand this. My hope is that someday you will reflect on this conversation and think for a moment before your prejudice overtakes you. In that moment I truly hope you will consider that there are other perspectives beyond your own. Other people who have an equal right to believe what they believe. Instead of furthering ignorance and intolerance I hope you come to appreciate the plurality of our world

  83. o.... ....

@ShotzMaster117 Your experience has formed your model of the world, just as someone else's experiences form their equally valid model of the world. You read a book. You formed opinions. You then decided that everyone else who read that book and has a different opinion must be wrong. From the same "evidence" contained within the same text different people created different models, all of which are valid. Evidence in and of itself is neutral, your view is based solely on your interpretation of it.

  84. o.... ....

@ShotzMaster117 I'm not making any claims about god. I am, however, trying to enlighten you. I would like for you to see how narrow, limited, and prejudiced your comments are. I'm trying to educate you on Hawking's model-dependant realism. I am trying to get you to expand your perspective to consider other points of view. I am trying to engage in an honest and philosophical debate about the nature of reality and the role faith and evidence play in that. You, sir or madam, are missing the point.

  85. o.... ....

@ShotzMaster117 Perhaps I haven't represented myself very well. I agree that faith without knowledge to back it up is empty and meaningless. However, some people would argue that they have evidence that god exists, whereas you would interpret that evidence differently. Religious experience is a phenomenon that is thus far largely unexplained. If we apply Hawking's model-dependant realism then both models (god, or no-god) are both equally valid if not equally useful to you as an individual.

  86. o.... ....

@ShotzMaster117 Your message seems very contradictory. You aren't claiming that god doesn't exist, but insisting that it must be proven with evidence that doesn't exist? Also you're faulting me for forcing beliefs I haven't claimed as my own on other people, whilst demanding I agree with you that god doesn't exist. All the while using patronizing and belittling language and calling me a hypocrite and close-minded. Forgive me for saying so, but am I really the hypocrite here?

  87. o.... ....

@ShotzMaster117 Indeed the sun is not the point. It was an analogy. Your interpretation of the supposed "evidence" concludes that god does not exist. However, someone else's equally valid model may determine that god does exist. Both models are valid. By excluding someone else's model because you don't interpret the evidence in the same way is extremely close-minded. You are entitled to your model, but that does not give you license to ignorantly belittle others for their views.

  88. o.... ....

@ShotzMaster117 I'm sorry you misunderstood my intentions. The personal attack is certainly unnecessary. I can assure you that the Bible (capitalized because titles should always be properly capitalized) is not the only book I have read, in fact one of my favourites is The Grand Design. In it, Hawking actually argues that a model in which the sun revolves around the earth is equally valid to one in which the earth revolves around the sun. If you wish to enlighten yourself you may want to read it

  89. o.... ....

@ShotzMaster117 I am both disappointed and saddened by your exceptionally close-minded and narrow view of the issue at hand. To say that all things must be supported by evidence is naive in its simplicity. "Evidence" must always be interpreted. As you ignorantly dismiss those who interpret things differently I would like to remind you that at one point there was substantial "evidence" that the sun revolved around the earth.

  90. D.... R....

@zozefup I think you missed the point of faith. Having faith in a person is not the same as having faith in a thing. faith in your home comes when you buy the home. When you buy it you put your faith in it , that it will support you and your family well, that it will remain firm, and even that it will be worth more in the long run. Having faith in God is not having faith that he exists, but trusting him to guide you, and to show you the right way to go when you are lost.

  91. o.... ....

@youlovelost13 Not to play the romanticist to your rationalist, but to reduce what was once considered mystical to something purely logical is somewhat fallacious. We may have discovered a medical root behind plague, but that isn't to say God had nothing to do with it (whether you think God actually would plague someone is a different matter). To exclude all other possibilities in favour of the scientific answer is to limit your perspective and discount any potential for multiple explanations.

  92. o.... ....

@youlovelost13 Our knowledge base may be growing, but I'm not so certain all signs point to knowledge being finite. I don't claim to be an expert, but, my understanding is that there are infinite possibilities with limited probabilities. This seems to indicate that the potential for new discovery is endless, including the possibility that I've misunderstood some fundamental of string theory :)

  93. y.... ....

@SeleniumAndroid Faith is not the same thing as knowledge. Please familiarise yourself with this important theological and philosophical concept before attempting to continue this discussion.

  94. y.... ....

@oncewasfound All scientific indications suggest that the unknown is finite. The course of human history has been one of collapsing horizons paired with ever-increasing knowledge. That doesn't necessarily mean that faith has no place; I merely object to the conflation of faith with a lack of knowledge, as that doesn't do justice to either faith or knowledge. Seven hundred years ago plagues were ascribed to God's vengeance; we now know this was incorrect. History is replete with such examples.

  95. S.... ....

@zozefup Believing in a creator is not close-minded. Believing that he answered all of life's questions 2000 years ago to a bunch of herders in the desert who then wrote everything down into a book which the creator wants us to see as an instruction manual for life, that's close minded. Believing that he sent his son down to earth that was also himself to die for our sins (a very weird way) and that he sent locusts to egypt and made people kill each other, that's close minded. At least to me.

  96. A.... M....

Why are there so many debates about religion and faith on here? You don't see it on a song about Satan. If you don't like the song, the religion, the message, please don't listen or argue.

  97. o.... ....

The frontier of the unknown is only receding if you believe the unknown to be finite. To believe that mankind may someday know everything (including God) is perhaps to overestimate the ability of man. However, to have faith without knowledge is empty and superficial. Faith cannot be the excuse for ignorance. We might be better served to live within the knowable, and acknowledge what we do not know as the realm of faith, whether that be faith in God or hope in future discovery.

Alright, but how do you know those construction methods were successfully tested? Simple; you trust- you have faith- that the people who tested them knew what they were doing. How do you know the sun won't explode for the next however many billion years? You have faith in the astrophysicist's calculations. And God isn't in the ineffable. He's omnipresent; He's everywhere at once. The universe isn't receding, if our faith in our scientists is not misplaced.
