Jars Of Clay - Good Monsters Lyrics

All the good monsters open their eyes
To see the wasteland where the home fires rise
And the people shouting, "Why, why, why"

Do you know what you are?
Do you know what you are?

All the giants wake from their sleep
And roll outside of safety's keep
And the pain makes them feel so alive

Do you know what you are; do you know what you are?
We are bored of all the things we know
Do you know what you are; do you know what you are?

Not all monsters are bad
But the ones who are good
Never do what they could, never do what they could

All the good monsters rattle their chains
And dance around the open flames
They make a lot of empty noise

While all of the bright eyes turn away
As if there wasn't anything to say
About the justice and the mystery

Do you know what you are?
Do you know what you are?
We are bored of all the things that we know
And we are forms of everything we love, we love..

If good won't show its ugly face,
Evil won't you take your place?
Nothing ever changes, nothing ever changes
By itself

We are bored of all the things that we know
Do you know what you are?
Because we are so in love with ourselves

We are forms of all the things we love.

  2. T D

A real serious song totally nailing it with fun irony subltle tones of Beatlemania and underlying plight of a Christian walk in a modern sinful world! well done J.O.C much respect and here in 2019 this is my 12 year olds favorite song at the moment................... awesomeness! God bless you all for making such great music to deal with the pitfalls of life- Uplifting and humbling at the same time! Aloha

  11. Julie Allen

    so cute

  12. ZOE

According to Dan Haseltine "this song is based of an Edmund Burke quote where he says, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." And it's basically recognizing that when we're able to really be comfortable with who we are, what we are, that's when we can humbly enter into the suffering in the relationship with somebody else without kind of having this sense of being better than they are" (End of quote). ...So i want to be a good monster, imperfect but saved, and i don´t want to just make an " Empty Noise" i just want my life counts

    T D

    Amen and well said

  13. Abigail C. Terrell

  17. Prepare4HisComing

I am not denouncing my brothers. I only suggest that they examine themselves to see that they are in the faith. I also suggest that they make sure they are staying close to Christ.

The part about hell was for the unbelievers to help them realize that they need saved.

    Dundarius Redripulin

Prepare4HisComing the band said before that they are not strictly a Christian rock band and that sometimes they want to break into the rock genre

  18. Prepare4HisComing

I come one more time. The darkness you've felt from time to time is the enemy and agreements you've made with him through believing his lies. The goodness you sense is not goodness unless the "good ones" are acknowledging that Jesus Christ came to earth. He was begotten of a virgin. He ministered on the earth and healed the sick, cleansed the filthy, and delivered the demonized. He then lay down His life for all humankind to save anyone willing to receive the free gift He gives. We know the seed fell on good soil if we love Him back and desire to please Him, desiring to do His will. We may make mistakes but we try at least, and in our heart we care to try. The commandments are all important, but the greatest of these is love for God 1st, and secondly love for others as yourself. Jesus loves His as Himself. Are you willing to be His?

He saw you on the cross and every sin (mistake) you'd ever make. He loved you regardless of how horribly He suffered for your sins. He forgave you. Are you willing to love Him back and receive Him. Make HIm the Lord of your life today. For all eternity you'll be happier than words can describe that you did so!!!

  19. Prepare4HisComing

Hello to the members of Jars of Clay. Have you gone mad? Oh foolish Jars of Clay who has bewitched you? Would you so easily give up on your Lord?!

He is good and there's nothing boring about Him. If sin hadn't entered the world through the freedom He gave humankind there would've never been a serious thought entering His mind. He'd have been having a fun and joyous time for all time.

Go back to Him! Those who are His will heed. Otherwise, He will remove the taste of Him He gave you that you so easily forgot.

Turn and don't perish. Taste and see the Lord is good and anything but boring. No man (or woman) is good. All good things come from above. Often those who do many good things and sin little in the world's eyes will then justify themselves, taking pride in themselves for this goodness. They won't turn and praise God. They then have no true love so will perish in their pride. Some have so much worldly wealth, so many blessings, so much notarity with humankind, they fill up on that instead of acknowledging their need to Christ to save them. They never praise God for their blessings so they perish.

It is not His will that any should perish, but He allows you freedom. Death is in one hand, life in the other. Chose Life, Chose Christ above all else and live.

Hell is hell for a reason. You see apart from God, apart from His presence there is nothing good. He will not having communion with evil for there is nothing dark at all in Him.

You have heard the truth. The wise will heed it.

I Could Be Sleeping Right Now

*Ahem* Let me provide my interpretation.
"The pain makes them so alive" - Pain from persecution, does the Bible not tell us to rejoice in our sufferings, and our trials should send us running back to Him.
"Do you know what you are? Do you know what you are?" I know what I am, I am a child of God, do you know what that makes me? Blessed.
"All the good monsters rattle their chains, and dance around the open flame" even if we are imprisoned like Paul was, we can still dance, sing, and give glory to God in the midst of our trial, dancing around the fire that God puts in our hearts.
The truly wise would consider their words carefully before denouncing their brothers in faith on an open forum on the internet. You have heard the truth, so for God's sake delete the comment.

    thelastpersonalive

Yet they act way Christ like they you.

  20. jesusdefeateddeath

Oh my God...Rick from the Walking Dead playing guitar @ 1:06

  21. PAULINO SILVA - GP

Minha banda preferida é Jars Of Clay Jesus em breve vem espero ver todos vcs no céu.

  22. timcourage

what is this crap, the thing I liked about them was the use of strings and their own sound from the beginning, this is stupid

    timcourage

    @Camodor
You're on the money, and not having that weird of a day I hope.  If there is no heart, soul and mind engaged in the voice of one who is living lifting and resonating praise and honor then by definition there is no worship happening.  A recording is inanimate.  I can also not say weather the songs intent was worship either, just not convinced.  Seems uninspired to me.

I Could Be Sleeping Right Now

Hmm, well, I consider this song worship because it provides a frame for me to give praise to God, since I can listen to this song and worship God, it seems to me like the song is a recording of worship, which in fact makes it a "Joyful Noise." So I guess worship could be interpreted different ways. If I wouldn't be overstepping by sharing an analogy: It could be compared to cheering on a sports team while watching the game on your television, you're still cheering on your team even though you're not in person. Thank you for having a polite discussion about this, I enjoyed getting to hear the perspective of a fellow believer. It was definitely an illuminating experience for me. : )

    FloridaIndependent

@timcourage Well, it's just their greatest album ever. One's continuing battle in life is captured in every song of the album.

    timcourage

    @FloridaIndependent
My criticism is about a departure from a unique musical style that will not necessarily mean that the narrative or lyrical meaning is different as a whole, just that this departure most definitely weakens the impact of that narrative and message because the history of the groups sound seems to have been mostly abandoned instead of refined.

    T D

@FloridaIndependent yep truth! still very relevant today in a mad mad world full of monsters - good and bad...

  23. EiferBrennan

Not a bad song, but I never understood why they changed their image so drastically.

    Neil Steinwand

@EiferBrennan The band was coming out of a dark time of their lives and Dan wanted to stress the difference between the outside and the inner turmoil.  The black and white coloring and the heavier tone of music reflect that turmoil.

  24. Brian Mason

    Jars...repent!

    Astronomy79

Exactly! Dan needs to stop supporting gay marriage.

  25. Fernando Henrique

Is it just me or the lead singer looks like Snape? hahaha

    Great song!

    Your Dignity

I promise it's not you, look at the Mv for "work". About 80% of the comments are some variants of that

  26. LSweet2007

A sorry attempt to sound like The Killers.

    MrAwesomeMatty

LSweet2007 Even though they might not even be trying to do that on purpose.

    Bobby Marko

JOC was established 8 years before the Killers and this song came out in 2006 so it may the other way around!

  27. kizamui

  36. Elena Martinez

this is a great song. I haven't heard it in a long time. what an amazing day I have had.

  37. Patricia Ferreira

For me it is the group that most love to hear the songs...

    T D

Their music is healing and helps bring me back to center of being a broken sinner saved by grace alone

  38. Kevin and Lori Floyd

I think He wants it all: honesty, angst and even cheese. :)

  39. DaveThe SodaGuy

this song represents how dangerously comfortable with our situation us christians are.
while society keeps blaming christianity on everything bad than happens to the world, we keep quiet and allow anti-religious people to keep ruining our name.

The bible said we would be persecuted by an anti-christian society. It's time for us good christians to stop allowing such injustices to happen. We need to defend ourselves from the people who want to destroy christianity in our society.

    kevin willems

That, is not what it's about.

    Kendra T

@kevin willems I honestly thought it was about "church people" who make a lot of noise but don't actually do any good for the world.

    thelastpersonalive

No this song is about people who claimed to be Christian but spread hatred and bigotry. Like people who are homophobic

  40. Caroline Kahrs

Like really Vevo? You are going to give me some ad...outrageous

  54. CaptainTimber

    I had a little heart attack when he opened his eyes. XD;;

  55. ProNubieForce5

Jars of Clay's songs are like poetry, there is more to the song than just the words. To understand where they are coming from, you must understand what they mean by the words they say.

    T D

    Broken and saved!

  56. icatchlife

    @TheBopha20
That's SUCH A TRUE interpretation of them. I've always loved their truthfulness and fearlessness to touch on things that normal Christians feel. Like doubt, worry, fear, depression, EVERYTHING that a normal human feels from time to time. Sometimes I can't get into Christian radio because it's all cheesy music when this is music I can sing to Christ so he understands exactly how I feel at times. And I think that's what he wants.....

  57. Andrew Wagner

Jars rocked it in the all white room that was just awesome!!!!!!!

    T D

sgt. pepper eat your heart out!

  58. Maggie Alonzo

    this is a nice song

  59. savannah ok

The jars are "thinkers" who follow Jesus. I've been a fan for like 15 years and I enjoy their profound perspective on christianity and what it is to be human having a personal relationship with the Almighty God. I call them thinkers because they seem to be able to express aspects of our relationship with God that many christians just don't seem to touch on...many christians just understand the cookie cutter facts without the heart.

    T D

they are brave in their lyrics and music and incredibly catchy hooks! spirit led touches my soul

  60. animewisher

@annfla10 make-up, pretty easy to do, but creepy effect

  61. Ann Hernz

did u notice there eyes they look so weird

  62. Two-lane Shenanigans

I love Jars. They're such dorks.

  63. sativacyborg_420

man,its more like theyre, a rock band that happens to consist of christians

  64. kevin johnson

Secular, a little bit, are groups like Jars of Clay but these kind of Christian bands I'd get young people to gravitate towards more so than, say, Lady Gaga or... That's if I had such a power and not to judge Jars of Clay, or Lady Gaga, or anyone, or anything...

  65. devon jerothe

    i love jars of clay
