Janis Joplin - Mary Jane Lyrics

Now when I go to work, I work all day
always tutns out the same
when I bring home my hard-earned pay
I spend my money all on Mary Jane
Mary Jane, Mary Jane Lord my Mary Jane

Oh if a man should look tame now, mean and mature,
they all turns out the same
'Cause they can't do nothing to make a man feel good
like my old Mary Jane
Mary Jane, Mary Jane Lord my Mary Jane

Now I walk in the street now lookin' for a friend
one that can lend me some change
and he never questions my reason why
'cause he too loves Mary Jane
Mary Jane, Mary Jane Lord my Mary Jane

Well I have known women that wanted no man
some that wanted to say
but I never knew what happened in this world
'Till I met up with Mary Jane
Mary Jane, Mary Jane Lord my Mary Jane

Oh when I'm feeling lonesome and I'm feelin' blue
there's only one way to change
Now I walk down the street now lookin' for a man
one that knows my Mary Jane
Mary Jane, Mary Jane it's my Mary Jane

I am interested in what her former unkind classmates would've had to say. How does that saying go? ... "The best revenge is success." But I have no idea why her peers treated her so badly, other than that she was original and different. Kids tend to tease those who are different.

Janis was a caring person who was able to feel the pain in others. She could empathize and bear their burdens. She was liberated to fly free which is a very attractive trait. She was sincere and encouraging to those around her. She didn't strike me as a sad person. But I don't believe she liked being alone.

The only thing I hate was the drugs and alcohol abuse going on. I wish that she could've loved herself enough to treat herself better. Culture shouldn't dictate what people do. And I know that she lacked internal fulfillment because she didn't like the down times, when she wasn't on stage or partying. Being alone.

She was an awesome singer and very passionate. It must've been hard for her parents and I'm sure they had their time with concern and worry. But they knew she was a free butterfly. Maybe a part of them was proud of her, too. Maybe her family secretly lived a bit vicariously through her.

In watching her story, little signs here and there told me that she likely talked to God sometimes. I had her albums when I was a teenager, but I have more of a love for Janis the person, than her talent or success. And I think that's better. She is missed.

"Mary Jane" is a blues song by Janis Joplin.

The song has five verses; the first includes the line "When I bring home my hard-earned pay, I spend my money all on Mary Jane".

A live performance of the song, recorded in San Francisco 1965 with the Dick Oxtot Jazz Band, is on the 1975 compilation album Janis. The song is also included on the 2007 compilation The Very Best Of Janis Joplin.

The song is often incorrectly attributed to Bessie Smith. Wiki

Alexandra, like you have probably read in the commentaries below.
Fire up your google and youtube...search for...Bessie Smith, Billy Holiday, Jelly Roll Morton, Peggy Lee, Lil Hardin Armstrong, anything with Swing, Blues, 20s, 30s in it. You get the idea.
Have fun listening. I envy you for discovering those artists the first time. :)

This was Janis. She covered Bessie Smith in her early years before she hooked up with Big Brother. This was in Frisco in 1963.

  48. c.... ....

Sounds like a "Tom Waits" treatment. That is with accoustic/authentic instrumental backing. Might be a local band in some big city.

  54. r.... c....

    janis ,,,not bessie grow up

  55. l.... ....

On the different albums on which this song is, it's credited as a Janis Joplin song. And Janis didn't have problem with telling when her songs were covers (she did plenty of them). Furthermore, at 0:30 she clearly (or less clearly) says : "Elizabeth Taylor, Marylin Monroe" who had just become famous when she sang the song. Finally, on "Bessie Smith's version" it's clearly not her voice, but Janis.

  56. E.... ....

This IS Janis...don't you folks have ears?

  57. C.... B....

    Why lie about that?

  58. C.... G....

This isn't Janis.. sounds like Bessie.

  59. S.... ....

  70. J.... ....

mary jane is cannabis..its an old blues song from unknown origins but covered by Bessie Smith and many many others. Look under Blues Reefer Songs 1930's-1940's Mary Jane on Youtube. A very old version of this song by Bessie Smith (although incorrectly attributed to Janis, possibly?)

  71. J.... ....

so she played Woodstock as a Junior? FAIL!

  72. j.... g....

were you one of those many 'bully' girls that made her feel so bad because she did not come from a so called family like yours. She made it pretty clear about how she was treated there..she was more than any of you could understand, you are still just as pitiful as she said...

  73. D.... S....

Nah sorry I think this song is about another mary jane ; )

  74. C.... T....

she was not fanous then, she sang in her church choir, I did too....slow dull life back then

  75. C.... T....

    oops i graduated in 1959

  76. B.... S....

    mary jane is marijuana

  77. D.... S....

I love mary jane too.. and this soul lady.. may she be at peace now.

  78. P.... C....

This is her very younger years. The beginning of the beginning down in Port Athur, Texas. she liked to immitate Bessie Smith..

  79. S.... ....

She hadn t her raspy voice yet. And she sure don t sound as good. Wonder what happened for the transformation to happen ? Drugs, Booze, pure sadness from a non readaptation she tryed the same year. Kozmic Blues lyrics could very well be a mesage for her parents...i think especially her father from the way he looks at her in a picture. Ic ould be terrible wrong though.

  80. E.... ....

@minnomouse That sublime dude has a point and She died a year later when she was 27 Sooo im not sure how that worked out

  85. L.... C....

I was incorrect, This is janis with the Oxtot Jazz band , san Francisco 1965. Both of my go to guys said it is her.Live crappy recording, but her nonetheless.

  86. Y.... ....

@blou4now should research first, just sayin'

  87. T.... ....

@blou4now Do let us know. I wasn't sure myself.

  88. L.... C....

Janis Bellowed, she did not whine.

  89. L.... C....

I have seen Janis and have every recording. This does not sound like her, and the piano player is definitely 30s- 40s style walking piano. Nobody i heard in the 60s had this kind of style on piano. And it plain just doesn't sound like her. There is some resemblance in places, But I would swear, unless you were able to document this and who the piano man is,this is not Janis.. I will search tomorrow to try to find out who this is.

  90. J.... J....
