Janis Ian - Present Company Lyrics

Used to drive a pipeline
From here to Blind Man's Bend
Tried and ride the main line
I went there with my friends
I like to be together
I like to be alone
Yes, and what I like best
Is I like it like this
And I stay with you at home

Enjoy the present company
Eat some grits and hominy
Couldn't get much better for me
I enjoy your company... ooh...

Used to drive an ocean liner
Sunk in '52
Off the coast of Indochina
Yes, I sunk there, too

Frost on the jewel glass windows here
Is ringing in the dawn, my dear
Spring is busting out of my ears
I wish that I was home

Enjoy the present company
Eat some grits and hominy
Couldn't get much better for me
I enjoy the company... ooh...

You can wave a banner
I don't mind if you do
I'm running back to Louisiana
I'm gonna drink that mountain dew
Used to be a loner
And I'd run the highway tolls
What I run now is I'm running anyhow
And I stay with you at home

So joy to the present company
Joy to the grits and hominy
And a joy to getting better for me
I enjoy the company... ooh...

Janis Ian Present Company Comments

I’m quite young to be listening to Janis Ian or even know about her but I’ve had a fascination with singer songwriters of the 60s and 70s. I stumbled upon this album on vinyl for less than $2 at my local record shop the other day and couldn’t resist. This is a great album and well worth the $2 I spent. I don’t know why this album isn’t as well known to rock fans. Doesn’t even have its own Wikipedia page. But it sounds like it’s right up there with albums like Blue by Joni Mitchell and Tapestry by Carole King imo. And I love how the tracks flow seamlessly, perfect for road trips and getaways! Great stuff!

Where's the rest of the song? According to my LP, it's 3:02 long.

Great Song. Excellent album. Can't think of any other album where she sounds so happy throughout  and so loose. Under appreciated. Much prefer this to some of her later ones, as undoubtedly good as they are. One of my  favourites for listening to on long trips. Thanks for taking the trouble to post this. The curious are directed to her website where you can hear  samples of all the rest of the tracks.

    How about "He's a Rainbow"?
