Janis Ian - Galveston Lyrics

Galveston
I'm so afraid to die
When the people all around me
Can't remember where they found me
And I'm telling you
I know it's a lie

All of the people smile at me
All of the people
Sing you a song
Guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes

Never been one for hanging around
With the same old crowd
I'll sing you my songs
Kid, they're all I can do
They're all that's allowed

Galveston
I'm so ashamed to die
When the people who surround me
Keep on thinking that they've found me
And I'm telling you
I think I know why

All of the people cheer for me
All of the people
Ring in the New Year
Ring out the old year misery

Never been one for hanging around
With the same old crowd
I'll sing you my songs
Kid, they're all I can do
They're all that's allowed

Saw Janis at Savannah Folk Festival circa 2005. You can say lotsa things about her--great songwriter...terrific singer...brave spirit...etc. But I wonder how many appreciate the fact that she's a FRIGGIN' OUTSTANDING GUITARIST. Listen to the intricate fingerwork, and the variety of sounds she makes while she sings. And notably..you cannot hear the style of any other artist in her work. That's all her! Kudos, Janis...love yer work.

Once a phenom ALWAYS a phenom.

I know "Society's Child" was banned from a lot of radio stations, as well as "At Seventeen". I'm glad we've moved on from that nonsense, but it still exists, unfortunately. I guess you "can't fix stupid".

Amazing. Except for the white hair and a couple pounds (like all of us), this woman looks and sounds the same as she did at 25. She's the same cool, funky, talented poet with a guitar. Lucky us.

Beautiful rendition of "Seventeen" at about 49:00. She sings her songs as well as she ever did...a true rarity among accomplished singers...

What an amazing voice she has. It has not aged since I first started listening to her in the 70’s; clear as a bell. Janis Ian, your great talent is uniquely yours, and your unique voice is up there with the Barbras and the Celines and the Whitneys, et al.

Thank you, Janis. You are such a joy, a pleasure, a gift. Your melodies and lyrics lift me up. For over 40 years. From your heart to mine and back again. Sing on.....

Just a woman,a guitar,a piano and 50 years of experience and insight. Wonderful songs, expertly delivered with a talent, poise and a humbleness rarely seen nowadays. I have been thoroughly entertained and strangely, more educated. Jesse is one of my favourite songs ever.

  30. R.... ....

    A amazing gem!

  31. D.... T....

it's funny - her voice while not exceptional is a voice that cuts through the mix in a way that sells - like the bottom isn't necessary alot of times. at times she reminds me of jane olivor in her affected regionalism and way of pronunciation.

    D.... T....

It's amazing how her voice has hardly lost any of its strengths over the decades. Maybe a little bit thinner, a little less warm and round, but overall still great and at full range. The high notes she still reaches are amazing. I'm quite a fan of Joni Mitchell but it is a shame how she has totally ruined her voice with her relentless smoking. Compared to this, Janis Ian's performance here leaves me stunned.

Bernhard Krickl I agree with everything you said except to my ear her voice has not aged discernibly over the decades. The only thing I notice is she seems to be slowing the tempo these days, which I think brings a certain maturity to the songs. Long time fan here.

    D.... T....

    Great voice love her singing
