Janet got down for sure, but musically it is just a James Brown oriented groove (Sampled from "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nuthin") that was very popular in the golden age of Hip Hop (which this song came out during) and which Jam and Lewis crafted to have some of the appeal of Teddy Riley's New Jack Swing. I think the key is at that particular time she was the Queen of the Funky uptempo music, whereas Whitney was doing either ballads or lighter, poppier dance tunes. But this type of sound would be the thing the next few years, even as far as when TLC came out, that mixture of Funk, R&B and Hip Hop, that would put R&B in a different bag as well.
