Jan & Dean - You Really Know How To Hurt A Guy Lyrics
We've been goin' steady now for such a long time
And up until now, everything was just fine
You say you still love me but it's not the same
It so plain to see that you're playin' a game
You really know how to make me cry
You really know how to hurt a guy
But what a mean way to say goodbye
Every time you hurt me, it seems like you planned it (it seems like you planned it)
I've talked to your friends but they don't understand it (they don't understand it)
Where did we lose it? What did I do wrong?
We can't break it up now, it's lasted so long
You really know how to hurt a guy
You really know how to hurt a guy
But what a mean way to say goodbye
If you'd look at me, you'd see tears in my eyes
When we're together and you're lookin' at other guys (at other guys)
The ones that you like are really not your kind
I know their type and what's on their minds
You really know how to hurt a guy
You really know how to make me cry
You really know how to hurt a guy
But what a mean way to say goodbye
You really know how to hurt a guy
You really know how to make me cry
You really know how to hurt a guy
But what a mean way to say goodbye
You really know how to hurt a guy
You really know how to make me cry
You really know how to hurt a guy
But what a mean way to say goodbye

Great song and the photos are great must have been great early 1960s west coast California
Alwayd been one of my all time faves!
Title same as one by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, not the same song other
wise...
has anyone else noticed the end of this song, the sound and the notes are almost exactly like the song You've Lost That Loving Feeling
does anyone know why Dean hated this song?
It was probably to "sappy" for him
the first time I heard this song was on an old episode of Riptide
I dont understand why Dean didnt like it---its a beautiful song.
wondered the same thing
"This is rock'n'roll"! Actually this was one of the better songs of the area (1960-62)
I'm going to fucking puke.
I hope it's very painful.
I met Jan and Dean years ago, after a show in 1980 or so here in the NYC area. The book, "When we get to surf city" by Bob Greene does a nice job of describing life on the road for J and Dean during the years after the 1966 crash.
I met them(+ Bob Greene)many times in the 80's. Best times I ever had. Thank you guys!
I'll never forget this tune y r k h t h a g. Gail singer
Man do I remember these songs, I"ve always loved there MUSIC nothing like them they well always be one of the best sufer singers origenals LOVE THEM!!!!
@saguaroboy This was produced by Jan Berry. Snuff Garret only produced the song Tennessee by Jan & Dean.
Nice compilation, Buddy. How did you get all those pics? I know that they're from The Berry Family Collection, did you have to get permission to post them from The Berry Family? What's actor Glenn Ford doing at the piano with Jan Berry at like 2:50, dude? Did you put those pics together in a slide show & then film it using a video camera while "You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy" played in the background from your radio? I have a classic heroic quality so I'm not up todate w/ this technology. thx
Where can i buy al there records
maybe amazon or e bay
@spacepatrolman I'm hip.
I know this is an old post, but I agree--Little Old Lady and Deadman's Curve/The New Girl in School were probably their best albums!
Thanks to Rick Nelson69! I appreciate the heads up. Happy new year, Spacepatrolman!
Jan did in fact often give Dean a hard time and invariably let him know who was the "boss". Kind of ironic that in later years, Dean really had compassion for Jan and agreed to tour with him. Then again, Dean needed to tour .. he did it to make a living
Dean didn't have to tour as he had a very successful graphics business. He did it out of love for the music and for Jan.
I think Gary Lewis and the playboys had this out later and it sounded much better. But I loved Jan and Dean.
This was probably a hit because of the lyrics, they are very sweet and sad, and show a guy's sensitive side, which is nice I think.
I think the Little Old Lady album was Jan's best work as a producer.Great album!!
i have never heard those songs before... but i do have a few other jan and dean songs that i could put on
Buddy, since you are a big Jan & Dean fan I was wondering if you've ever heard "Easy As 1,2,3" or "When It's Over" from "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" CD. These are great tracks that are as goo dif not better than their hit singles. They would also be great for posting!
This isn't a bad record. I mean, it's pretty good, and I don't mind hearing it. However, of all the slow songs and love ballads that Jan & Dean did as albums tracks and b-sides, I think most of them were significantly better than this song. It's ironic that this was the only slow song to ever become a hit for Jan & Dean.
It's true that Dean did not like this song -- and he is right in that it is not at all up to Jan & Dean usually first-rate standards. That's also why Dean consistantly left it off later compilation albums that he picked the tracks for ("Gotta Take That One Last Ride," etc.) Dean had a good ear for what would work. He's the one who talked Liberty into issuing "Popsicle," a track intended simply as album filler, as a single after Jan's accident. It became one of Jan & Dean's best 45s.
thanks 4 the info very interesting
well, co written by b-boy collaborator roger christian and probably produced by snuff garrett (gary lewis et al) cool song
this has got to have a brian wilson connection- i'll check it out and get back!
