Jan & Dean - Eve Of Destruction Lyrics

The eastern world it is exploding
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill but not for votin'
You don't believe in war but what's that gun you're totin'?
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'

But you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say
Can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today?
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy, it's bound to scare you boy

And you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Yeah my blood's so mad feels like coagulating
I'm sitting here just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth it knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'

And you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for four days in space
But when you return it's the same old place
The pounding of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead but don't leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace

And tell me
Over and over and over and over again my friend
You don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction
Mmm, no, no, you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Jan & Dean Eve Of Destruction Comments
  1. C.... E....

War is an ill thing, as I surely know, but it would be an ill world for weaponless dreamers if evil men were not now and then slain -Rudyard Kipling

  2. D.... S....

    Jan and Dean!
Just go surfing -- you''ll feel fine again.

  3. H.... H....

I wonder how the audience would have reacted if Jan and Dean had performed this at one of their shows.

  4. r.... b....

This is not Jan and Dean. It's Barry McGuire.

    r.... b....

This is Jan and Dean's version. Not as good as Barry McGuire's version. Both use the same backing track musicians.

    r.... b....

    You're absolutely wrong.

  5. B.... K....

This tune was brought to the Byrds in 1965, but they turned it down. It then went to Turtles and Jan & Dean. Barry took influence from the way Jan sang the tune, and the rest is history.

  6. T.... M....

Lol it sounds like Little Jerry & The Monotones from Sesame Street!

  7. M.... L....

Voces mao sabe nada de passado

  8. B.... K....

This is actually Barry McGuire singing it instead of Jan Berry.

    B.... K....

    Brett Koeshall no

  9. N.... R....

This is the first time that I have heard this version. There's the McGuire version, of course. I think I have also heard one by Turtles.

I presume that Jan Berry is on lead voice. Is Dean Torrence on this one? If so, what instrument(s) is he playing?

  10. j.... ....

A poor choice for the boys to record.

  11. T.... A....

Okay, I'll listen to his version. Thanks for the heads-up.

  12. T.... A....

This sounds like the exact same backing track of the McGuire version. Sorry, but Barry McGuire is the only one who could sing this and be taken seriously. He OWNS this!

    T.... A....

I agree same backing track.......the Wrecking Crew.

    T.... A....

    You're wrong bub.

  13. J.... S....

@Maryw7 true maybe the beach boys

    J.... S....

Yeah this is pretty damn good

  14. j.... ....

This is really uncharacteristic for them, with the Dylanesque harmonica. I would not have know it was them from listening to it.

    j.... ....

1965 was the dividing line between early 1960s American pop music and mid-to-late 1960s changes brought by folk music, Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Burdon & The Animals, and the rest of the British Invasion stars.

    j.... ....

And they used the same backing track as Barry McGuire's original version.

  15. M.... ....

Absolutely my favorite version of this song.....who could possibly do this as good as Jan?

  16. T.... J....

    Destruct...shuunn? Poor second, I'm afraid.

  17. D.... F....

he does sound like he doesn't like the song.

  18. D.... F....

HI Wib. I'm disappointed that Jan had low regard fro the counter culture and the anti-war movt. How do you knwo that?

  19. n.... ....

@wjb4341 Notice, too, the rather pointed substitution of "Watts, California" for "Selma, Alabama" in the lyrics.

  20. c.... ....

    What a great version.

  21. b.... ....

This cover d oesnt work for me... Barry Mcguire is a tough act to follow. To much of a Mike Love thing going on here.... Even with the little up date like 8 in space and Watts Cal.....

  22. K.... ....

I've never heard this before. The only version I've heard is by Barry McGuire.

    K.... ....

    Turtles did it also
