James Brown - Prisoner Of Love Lyrics

Alone from night to night you'll find me
Too weak to break the chains that bind me
I need no shackles to remind me
I'm just a prisoner
Don't let me be a prisoner

For one command I stand and wait now
From one who's master of my fate now
I can't escape for it's too late now
I'm just a prisoner
Don't let me be a prisoner

What's the good of my caring
If someone is sharing those arms
But not with me?
Although she has another
I can't have another for I'm not free

She's in my dreams awake or sleeping
Upon my knees to her I'm creeping
My very life, my life, is in her keeping
I'm just a prisoner
Don't let me be a prisoner
(Prisoner of love)
You made me a prisoner
(Prisoner of love)
And you made me love you
(Prisoner of love)
Take those shackles of love and go away
(Prisoner of love)
'Cause I love you so much more
(Prisoner of love)
You you you...

  37. L.... J....

I could hear this song over and over again.

    L.... J....

This is a lot mellower than James Brown usually is. I love his rendition of this traditional love song

  38. L.... J....

    I love this song Awsome.

  39. L.... W....

In '63 James Brown had it all: the voice, the material, the dramatic delivery, legendary gigs at the Apollo. These early songs are his very best. Love this one!

    L.... W....

    Absolutely..

  40. C.... S....

My boyfriend,Clarence, introduced me to James Brown when he came out of the military in 1963. I loved the song, Try Me, but had never seen the artist. So one night he took me to the municipal auditorium in New Orleans to see him. We never missed another show when he came to town. If I'm not mistaken I think it was $3.00 to get in.

    C.... S....

Very nice 👍🏼 listen to “Your Love Was For Me” James Brown. This song is what Soul/Funk is.

  41. G.... S....

"heroic" singing, masterpiece orchestration. Rest in Peace Mr James Brown 'til the Resurrection

    G.... S....

You stated something deeply beautiful and so true. James Brown is singing in a heroic style. It is indeed exalted vocalizations he gives us, and the choir behind him is so gently and beautiful. James Brown was a Taurus and the throat is their the part of the body they are most powerful with, and it holds true with this magnificent singer of ballads. Yes, what you state about the orchestration is also true. The strings sound magical and almost coming at the listener from another dimension. The engineers who put this all together were among the finest, the entirety of this recording is mixed so beautifully. JB exalts the listener, he gave us so much. I remember hearing this recording as a kid. I will always remember this American genius of song. I love you so much, James Brown. Love you so much.

  42. Z.... F....

    huge killer

  43. C.... B....

I'm in my early 20's & I'm listening to this. Good music!

  44. k.... k....

  45. G.... M....

Prisoner of Love II song on a book called songbook I created if you look at some of the sites that has songs like The Average White Band you read more or less the whole story but I'm also listening to the songs while recreating the memory

  46. H.... S....

This was my favorite style of singing from James Brown. Try Me, Please Please Please,, Prisoner Of Love, This is A Man's World were just great music. Brings back memories of a time when people cared for one another. Your neighborhood was really a village.

  47. O.... J....

    M.... J....

This is my favorite version of his prisoner of love so beautiful I just love this sitting back and hearing it and also when you see him and you see and with the Flames they were just as exuberant and just as flamboyant as him and they were true professions you had to see him and believe him he was all that they'll never be another one like you God bless you James Brown be with your God

    M.... J....

    You know it

  50. J.... M....

When we went to the 1810 we have WVFW in Brentwood we would always request this song for one of our slow songs usually change run the voice isn't the same as some of the other songs he's really romantic on this one

    J.... M....

It took me a while to transition to strings after being groomed on Try Me, Night Train, Good Good Lovin'.....but I graduated.

  51. A.... N....

  74. Q.... ....

I love this sad song! Who made this first, Perry Como? James took it over the R&b line

    Q.... ....

Glad you enjoyed it. It was quite popular in the Sixties. I believe it goes way back to like the Thirties.

    Q.... ....

It was co-written and first recorded by singer-bandleader Russ Columbo in 1931.  It hit the top 10 on Billboard first by Billy Eckstine in 1945 (#10) and then by Perry Como (#1) and the Ink Spots (#9) both in 1946, before becoming James Brown's first pop top 20 hit in 1963.

    Q.... ....

+QuentinQuatermass I was totally turned off by the strings in '63. What do eighteen year olds know?

  77. H.... M....

James was one of the few artists who sounded better in person. His live performances of this classic are even better.

  78. P.... B....

    G.... C....

srercrcr yeah im 35 years old and im a big James Brown Fan there will be another one quite like him

  80. T.... Z....

He and Bobby Bird have taken a rather trite and sappy-soapy Russ Columbo lyric and melody and made it meaningful, believable, heart-breaking, and absolutely electrifying.

    T.... Z....

+Theodore Zuckerman Well, the song can't be THAT bad - was also a hit for Billy Eckstine and Perry Como. Eckstine is probably how JB knew the song.

  81. H.... K....

I wonder what Russ Columbo would think of this...

  82. G.... P....

This is my favorite #1 song oldie but goodie song!!!!

    G.... P....

This has always been my favorite oldie but goodie song.

    G.... P....

This is one of those twilight hour last dance songs of all times. I grew up in all the sixties, every one tried to imitate this song.

  83. B.... ....

Just before the "Funk",there was this style of singing James Brown was known for. R.I.P.Soul Brother # 1

    B.... ....

@Theodore Zuckerman,I'm a big James brown fan and work out in a James Brown Shirt, I agree with you Mr. Theodore, 100%. The James Brown story is Great and sad at the same time, can that be possible?

    B.... ....

I also agree concerning the Apollo album. I played it all the time. I enjoyed him more back then. I just couldn't get used to the "funk". However he was a performer. Soul Brother#1.. Yes

    B.... ....

    The Godfather of soul..YES!

    B.... ....

Yup. I love the old stuff in the beginning.

    B.... ....

    Dont like the funk.

  84. v.... ....

So many people have recorded this standard...hear several versions at http://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/272253.html

    v.... ....

@vp81955 I can't find an awful lot of versions. The ones I do find are all pretty dull, and much like Russ Columbo's original. Nothing that I've heard yet compares to any of James Brown's versions. Nothing. No-one else sounds like they mean it. they are just singing the words. Even Lena Horne. JB sounds like he means it. Like he has been seriously affected this way.

    v.... ....

@Theodore Zuckerman This was his first release of it, followed by at least one more a few years later (not as good, more frilly). thx

    v.... ....

it don't matter , because James Brown sang it the very best

    v.... ....

    It DOESN'T matter.  To you.

  86. F.... B....

My wife and I back in the early '60's swayed to this great James Brown song many a times, Ah, the memories!!

    F.... B....

How sweet , and those days are gone I mean they don't exist in this generation anymore, it's nothing but cuzzing rap now a days...

    F.... B....

I agree with you, Gina,....Those days may be gone, but our music keeps our memories alive.

    F.... B....

If I could jump into a time machine set for this era, ....I go and never come back.
