James Brown - Just Won't Do Right Lyrics

Since you've been gone
I drink & gamble every night
You just won't do right

Tell me...
Am I the one

Tell me...
Am I the one

Tell me, tell me, am I the one
Since you've been gone I've been all alone
Waiting and watching for you
My heart is trying slowly bye and bye
Still, still for you

Since you've been gone
I drink & gamble every night
You just won't do right

This isn't Doo wop, this is Soul.

    T.... ....

    Doo Wop.

    T.... ....

It's actually BOTH. Doo Wop AND Soul are both derived from R&B...just like Rock and Roll was. This is R&B.

JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES
I hear THE FLAMES singing on this track, don't you ? (Their NAME is also on the RECORD LABEL.)

  13. I.... S....

Lyrics are right to the point. I neither drink nor gamble but still can't do right

  14. G.... W....

This song here features the original Flames. Along with Brown & Bobby Byrd are Sylvester Keels, Johnny Terry, Nafloyd Scott, Nashpendel Knox & Fred Pulliam. Sadly they have all passed away.

    G.... W....

    yeah sad indeed

    G.... W....

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame only inducted the longest-serving Flames members: JOHNNY TERRY, BOBBY BYRD, BOBBY BENNETT, and "BABY LLOYD" STALLWORTH. The Hall of Fame President/CEO Terry Stewart stated that the Flames were one of SIX groups that SHOULD HAVE been inducted with their original lead singers...and that they SHOULD have been inducted with JAMES BROWN back in 1986.

  18. M.... K....

On the album Soul on Top, the lyrics are "Since you've been gone, I cry in the chapel every night."  Interesting!

    M.... K....

    God doesn't like gambling

    M.... K....

Antti Lappalainen or drinking... but that's why we're not gods, just human beings who actually get to enjoy life... for now

Yes, Martta, I have that version too. James & The Flames recorded this song at least three times. The FIRST version said, "I drink and GAMBLE every night". So did the SECOND version. The LAST version had the lyric change to : "I sit in the CHAPEL every night" .

Here are the lyrics for anyone that's interested:
    Since you've been gone
I drink and gamble every night
Girl, I drink and gamble every night
    Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh
    Just won't do right

Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me
    Am I the one?
Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me
    Am I the one?
Tell me, tell me, am I the one?

    Since you've been gone
    I've been all alone
Waitin' and watchin' for you, oh
My heart is cryin', slowly I'm dyin'
    Still I'm feelin' for you
    (Still, still, still you, baby)

Oh, I drink and gamble every night
    Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh
    Just won't do right
    Too-dup, woo-ooh, why

This was the first song I ever played on stage with a band.  They called the chord progression a Vamp back then - C - E minor (or A minor) - F - and G.  Almost all Do-wop was that vamp, in the same manner as a 1-4-5 blues progression, which just left out the minor chord and changed the time.  I was under 18 so the bar owner had me sit on a chair next to the piano and I was scared out of my mind.  That was in White Plains, New York in 1958 - a great moment in time for me.
