Jam, The - Liza Radley Lyrics
Liza Radley - see the girl with long hair
See her creeping across summer lawns at midnight
And all the people in the town where we live
Say "she's not quite right"
She don't fit in with a small town
They just can't understand why she doesn't say much
But in her darkend room it's for their lives only
She cries
Liza Radley - see her jump through loneliness
Liza Radley - take me when you go
And as the people pass by - their heads in the air
Haunting with their noise - she recalls a lonely sigh
She knows their dream of life, they won't ever find
Liza Radley - I pledge myself to you alone
She'd kiss my face and say "Love means nothing at all"
She'd kiss my face and say "Life means nothing at all"

Jam, The Liza Radley Comments
The best part of Start! was the b-side.
2020 still listening to the jam.
I think we've all known a Liza Radley at one time or another.
I lov you Liza ;-)
Just never gets old. Brilliant
To me, this song is nearly perfect, but the "Taxman" bassline always irked me a bit...
This track haunts me so much, having listened to it for the first time in decades. I'm reminded of my youth and the special place Paul Weller and The Jam had in my mind at the time. Such a gifted poet and songwriter, I was lucky enough to meet one night at Portsmouth Guildhall.
Adam, had pretty much the same reaction! I was 9 years old in 1977, the year I was introduced to The Jam by my older brother & instantly fell in love with the music. Don't laugh, but I remember him & I jumping up & down, playing pretend guitars with tennis rackets to 'This Is The Modern World' LP. Unfortunately, I never got to meet them (I hear Bruce Foxton is a particularly nice bloke. A very underrated bass player too! Listen to his work on 'Down in a Tube station at Midnight', for example). Anyway, rambling. The Jam were sublime. A very special part of my youth too, mate! I haven't heard this track in decades. It's still brilliant. Best wishes.
Love Liza Radley, reminds me of my late best friend Nick Franks!
Classic, either a or b sides, just brilliant music.
The Jam part of my adolescence, and now I’m 52 I’m so thankful that they where part of my life 👍👍👍👍👍
Everything Weller does is pure gold.
hello doom patrol fans!
Up the junction great film even better song..!!!
and weller could put this on a b-side
The best B side ever written most bands would give their right arms for a song as good as this.Another underplayed piece of brilliance from the best band in the world.
The jam should reunite and tour, man that would be amazing
Favorite jam song
The Jam's b-sides were better than pretty much everyone else's a-sides tbh.
Certainly better than Jam 'a' sides. They could have done with a decent vocalist as well, but this is a great song
Classic
Awesome.
Brilliant, and underrated song.
Love this
Timeless music. The Jam were the absolute best
Weller is a genius
Liza Radley, I pledge myself to you alone
She'd kiss my face and say, "love means nothing at all."
She'd kiss my face and say, "life means nothing at all."
in case nobody gets it its about mental illness very perceptive of weller considering how 30 years we get it well i hope we do
Is There Any BAD Jam Songs? You'd Have To Be Jackod To Think Any Were. Style Council And Solo Career, Also. It's ALL A+. Paul Weller And Every Member Of All Groups, You're All GENIUSES.
Tony Lowry News of the World, Don’t Tell Them You’re Sane and for selfish reasons Precious.
deep sorry for the passing of your brother.
love this tune and the group, still miss them after all these years.
reminds me of my school, Drayton Manor High, 1979-83
my last class was 5b1.
Underestimated song,it's one of there best, buetifull.
Superb Song, Amazing Band.
She kissed my face and said life means nothing at all
this song has nothing to do with mods or anything like that,my 1st wife lived on albert drive in woking her dad auditioned for the jam at school he still has the original flyer from their first gig, believe it or not woking was a small town in the late 70s not taken over by immigrants, its about a girl from school who was shy and was picked on just shows you weller had a heart
That is so nice to know! It's a beautiful song, can't believe it's a b-side
The best B side ever!
Great! Although I prefer the demo version on Extras.
Up the junction .... Who would think some one from there would like some one from there ... Love story

Grant Barclay Message you tonight.
RIP Dude we salute you xx
Great song choice, and rip
Great film footage, compliments a great PW song
Met a 'Lisa Radley' once - could not get her to fall in love with me - pity
Great Song. So Brilliant. A Masterpiece Of A Track Made By Total Geniuses.
I remember buying this on the Absolute beginners'EP IN 1981. i was fortunate to live in Boston, where there were record stores that had great music that wasn't played on commercial American radio.
Classic Weller. Great video you put together there.
denniswaterman looked very uneasy on that scooter
Timeless classic..X :)
Fuck off any Tories watching this...
tory here lol
im no tory, but voted tory in election, just like paul weller i became disillusioned with politicians with a facade of socialism while feathering btheirvown caps, free enterprise for all, you reap what you sow
Being a mod meant being affluent and bettering yourself, that wasn't the mantra any labour government ever fostered!!!! Long live free enterprise
Fine film.
bass line , from the tax man.
nope, you're thinking of the A side 'Start'
yep . i beg your pudding
Which was an obvious rip off of Taxman so Oliver was absolutely correct. Love Liza Radley though; one of my absolute favourite Jam tracks.
The A side (Start) was also a rip off, of the Beatles.
tax man bass line from stax soul music in the 60s
is that dennis waterman
oliver o neill yes definitely 1968 !!!!!!!!!
Yes, Up The Junction. Adrienne Poster and a young Maureen Lipman. One of the best films ever. I'm sure Up The Junction by Squeeze was about this. Nell Dunn wrote the original book, a collection of short stories. Liza Ridley goes very well with this film, as does Waterloo Sunset.
Sorry, Radley.
This movie has nothing to do with the song the movie was made in 1968 and is called Up the junction, about a upper glass girl who meet a working class boy starring Dennis Waterman and also Maureen Lipman...
Weller's homage to the beatles Eleanor rigby. great tune!
It always reminded more of the Who's 'Maryanne with the shaky hand'. But yes, the names are similar.
Maureen Lipman, near the beginning
Also, Susan George at 0.12.
Pure class...raw, real, MOD!
still a Weller classic, timeless
I Think Quad was modelled on this concept
*Fantastic*
It was the B side of Start in 1980....
Excellent song. This is first time I heard it.We in America missed out on so much great music, especially from THE JAM.
my song!!!!!
Splendid...bring the Pinot Noir
AWESOME............MOD,ON
Three words Brilliant!
Ha ! You canb't count Mate - I make that two words.
Cat Deeley
Up the Junction
I recognise this video, it took me hours to edit. A credit would have been nice! Wonderful, See Saw. MikeeMod
I love this song so much. I also really enjoyed the comments below. Made me lol!
WOW that is all x
Great piece, footage goes well with a rare outing of a Weller classic.Would pay loads to them live again.
Paul Weller is a legend. Britains premier pop/rock poet and song writer.
Weller = Genius!
what film is this?
Up The Junction
Still sounds as fresh as the first day i heard it as a 13 year old lad !
Quality :)
Top job...
To the girl with long hair that I never got the chance to love X (M)
greetings from sydney. fine take on a classic b side mixed beautifully with up the junction nice one mate
Poetry and song, lyrics and emotion, aggression and compassion x
That was very enjoyable.
Better ask Paul eh !?.........but i doubt the ethereal !
great upload i remember seeing this film years ago could'nt remember it's name thanks again
I listened to this a thousand times as a fifteen year old girl, alone, in Cornwall; 31 years ago. The Jam and Paul Weller at their best, matching my teenage angst, loneliness and anger. Second of course was Eton Rifles.
This song just goes to show what a truely great band the jam were. and how diverse weller's influences were at the time. nice syd barrett type whimsical number.
great vid for great song weldone
love the film its a classic and like the video it takes you back to when Britain had factories and a working class life
!968 when this film came out i was a child, My life started a year later 1969 A 12 yo Skin
@1559godhead Ah yes, you romantic. Lost in reverie for 'things past', she is vision-like to me also.
Another for you... almost a full chapter of childhood musings, then "and all that from a cup of tea"! Resist temptation to throw book at wall and plough on.
Excellent piece, very evocative. This is certainly how I'd always pictured Liza Radley.
I reckon this song is about the 'LIz' character played by Julie Christie in Billy LIar. If any of you ever meet PW, would you mind aksing him and getting back to me on the subject. Thanks cats!
A comment above from Weller's old school mate says it's about a shy girl in class who was picked on.
What a great version - where is this from? Think I must be used to the version from Extras, which I guess is a demo.
Weller walks on water.
well done nice work
paul weller what a talent !!!
thanx 4 posting
Well done!
@Oxmix64 film from 1968, i believe it influenced Squeeze' songwriting duo.
Great song and the movie clip has got my interest. I have not seen or heard of this movie. Is it somehow connected with the song Up the Junction by Squeeze?
classic- maureen lipman is superb ********
