Jam, The - Away From The Numbers Lyrics

Things are getting just too cozy for me
And I see people as they see me
Gonna break away and gain control
You free your mind
You free your soul
I was the type who knocked at old men
(history's easy)
Who together at tables sit and drink beer
(somewhere is really)
Then I saw that I was really the same
So this link's breaking away from the chain
Away from the numbers
Away from the numbers
Is where I'm gonna be
Away from the numbers
Away from the numbers
Is where I am free
I was sick and tired of my little niche
Well gonna break away and find where life is
And all those fools I thought were my friends
(coaching is easy)
They now stare at me and don't see a thing
(reality's so hard)
Till their life is over and they start to moan
How they never had the chance to make good
Away from the numbers
Away from the numbers
Is where I'm gonna be
Away from the numbers
(away from the numbers)
Away from the numbers
Is where I am free
Is where I am free
Is where I'm gonna be
Is reality
Reality's so hard, reality's so hard...

Jam, The Away From The Numbers Comments
  1. G.... W....

Early jam when they had so:much energy

  2. J.... P....

I’m here ... still away from the numbers although I do like numbers just not groups of people and reality is still hard

  3. R.... G....

Was a punker in the late 70’s and early 80’s...this is the ONLY band from that time I still listen to all the time. They’re one of the best bands from any time period though aren’t they? Used to drive around in my old Datsun 510 and blast ‘em every fucking day.

  4. J.... K....

Away from the Numbers inspired my Modernist outlook in my youth...

  5. s.... ....

    brilliant

  6. j.... ....

Classic. One of their very best

  7. M.... 6....

To all you young kids out there this is the standard you need to start at to be true legends like these. Weller was only 17 when he wrote this .

  8. p.... ....

Gutted when Weller disbanded The Jam-They could have gone on for years like The Who and The Kinks did-They could have been anything they wanted to be but selfish Weller left Bruce and Rick in the shit and millions of adoring fans to work with untalented people and then make very boring stuff like Long Hot Summer and many other yawwwwwn type rubbish songs like that-he even greased his hair back giving all his fans the 2 fingers-then later he realised what a twat he had been and re styled his hair in the Mod style -the style he still has to this day. Sorry Mr Weller but you just very average now when you could have been a world star. You could have done what Townsend did and got into films and opera type albums-very sad ending to a once God like group. Long Live The Jam !!

    p.... ....

    Shut up you pathetic nonce.

The Who have sold their soul and still touring without the loon and Ox .... yawn!

By the way Weller is entitled to do what he wants with his own life rather than pander to butt hurt fan boys like yourself.Oh, and if you hadn't noticed, he is still a massive star and sells out gigs all over the world.

  9. R.... C....

    I’m a boy/I can see for miles!!

  10. m.... h....

    God this takes me back!

  11. A.... K....

"What d'ya think about the Jam ? "
    *"The who ?"*
    -- John Lydon

    A.... K....

"What d'ya think about Lydon ?"
    Sell out snidey cunt!

  16. H.... B....

"You free your mind, you free your soul" - that was then, today it's all focus on victimhood. Wake up yer mobile gazing Facebook addicted fuck heads! Go your own way...

  17. n.... ....

Bought this album when I was 15 and visited London for the first time. Long time ago. I was blown away!!

  18. M.... ....

Did buy this at the time in my local Woolworth. Loved (and still do) all the punk new wave bands from this era. Punk (New Wave) (hate labels) becoming tuneful is fine by.

  19. C.... M....

Thunder, Beethoven, romanticism, and a rollicking Fuck YOU. Brilliant.

  20. s.... b....

    in the crowd? anybody ?

  21. C.... M....

I remember being a kid on a plane in the fucking bathroom flying somewhere. There were no fucking iPods. I had this tune in my brain while I looked at my 19 year old self in the mirror...lyrics memorized , riffs ....and I swore I wouldn't become what I hated in adults. WELL, reality is so hard...but I've done ok. God bless Paul Weller, the Jam, and all of you who I don't know, but love for even being here. Take care.

  22. j.... .....

the jam give me style and confidence

  23. D.... G....

SEEN THEM LIVE AT DEESIDE WALES AS A 13 YEAR OLD KID AND STILL LIVIN THE DREAM NEAR 40 YEARS ON.FUCKIN AWSOME MAN.

Great song, as evidenced by 0 dislikes despite the sound quality!

  28. T.... S....

Jolin, QUE BOBO.

    C.... M....

    C.... M....

    C.... M....

im 50 now bro. an 80's Mod and still scooting and still one of Us. your part of something bigger, don't ever forget that, we are brothers.

  32. S.... L....

heard this the first time in 1986 and shifted....the Jam were singular. Raw.

  33. R.... H....

Not a bad composition for an 18 year old kid. We missed them in the USA for the most part back in the day.

    R.... H....

+Robert Harkins he was 18? Wow.

This is probably my favorite jam song.

They came to a little club outside of St. Louis but I missed it. Didnt have trasnport and no one who did have transport liked punk and would take me.

    R.... H....

+Emmett McAuliffe They were in Boston once. We were in Springfield, the other side of the state. That was a long way away then. The word didn't get around well then either. By the time you found out about something, it had often gone by. I was introduced to them, and others, by a friend who I worked with at Riverside Park. They were the perfect tonic for the same old same old. I couldn't stop listening to them.

  34. t.... b....

very white london  tune, in a good way

    t.... b....

this was always my fav Jam track - still sounds great to this day

    t.... b....

    They're not from London .

  35. d.... ....

    fucking ace!

  36. s.... ....

That book Thick As Thieves that came out last year is all you need to know about what The Jam mean to people and their importance - if you ain't got it, you're missing out.

  37. N.... L....

nah, still good stuff about, if that's what you want?

    yt waterworld dead

just coz nobody watches it, doesn't mean it's crap

  38. J.... B....

I'm 15. I was born into the wrong generation.

  39. i.... m....

Will Paul be there i don't think so or i would be The Jam i wouldn't waste my time with this old shite..... GARBAGE !!!

  40. A.... ....

FROM THE JAM are playing the full ALL MOD CONS album in it's entirety on Friday 01 November at Clapham Grand to make it's 35th Anniversary. tickets from agmp.co.uk

  41. i.... m....

Load of shite From The Jam my ass !!

    i.... m....

ian melia u are shyte gay boy

    i.... m....

    i.... m....

Looks like a right yellow skinny puny cunt

  42. b.... ....

    great tune love it

  43. S.... T....

    0 dislikes...fucking beautiful.

  44. p.... T....

Yeah, but he's a guitar player and so he's nicked it from Townsend..Good company to keep!

  45. M.... E....

    *off beat

  46. M.... E....

It's really not. The whole guitar-hit-on-the-o-beat thing comes naturally when you do the maximum R&B thing. It comes via the horn section of Soul tracks

  47. A.... ....

FROM THE JAM are playing the whole IN THE CITY live at Koko in London this October to mark it's 35th Anniversary.

  48. N.... T....

Great song, really reminds me of freshman year in high school. But it's tough to listen to it and not have the Batman theme start in right after it!

  49. b.... ....

shame there's no bands around nowadays that even come close to the classics, clash, the jam and pistols and that.

  50. L.... G....

Top stuff. The Jam always delivered.

  51. N.... ....

Townsend influence in there alright. Had the first three albums and singles up to that point then never bought anything after that. Strangely enough I have a mate who has everything from All Mod Cons onwards and can take or leave the first two albums. However I was always happy for the Jam to sit alongside the Clash, Sex Pistols and the Buzzcocks, whereas my mate went out, bought a Lambretta and embraced the whole Scooter scene.

  52. S.... R....

love this song. loving reading the comments. what a great band. great to see you peeps discovering one of my fave bands of all time

  53. k.... n....

    Away From The Numbersって当時、評論家から一番評価されていた曲らしい。JAMの中で一番好きな曲。

  54. R.... S....

Excellent! I walked three miles to buy this album when I was 16 ...

  55. f.... f....

Majestic. Weller Larkin the widest prairies have electric fences

  56. j.... s....

The riff is unapologetically Townsend....but what a great great song

  60. j.... l....

    For Lana top Jam fan..k.t.f....x

  61. S.... L....

Listen to this song and compare it to "Won't You Let Me" by The Viletones. Eerily similar...both came out in '77, not sure on the exact dates to know which came out first. But DAMN are they nearly identical.

  62. s.... h....

    great song

  63. T.... ....

Look this up: Viletones -- Won't You Let Me. The similarity between the 2 songs is eerie.

  64. O.... ....

I forgot how much i loved this song. Shame on me.

  65. M.... A....

I think we all can relate to this song I know i can.

  66. B.... J....

I bought this the day it came out in the USA..way down south in Ga. I formed a band after hearing it...I still love it..it changed my life...I still record and perform music cause of the enery on this record....Hell, Yeah!...This is my favorite song...and true today ..reality so hard...

  67. G.... P....

Would you rather that those born to wealth have it all rather than earn it? I understand working class to be just that – work hard, do better in life for your family and the community.
Most people I see calling themselves “Working Class” are fat-arses too unimaginative to shift from the couch and do a bit of graft, claiming the right to inherit state houses from their mums. State houses - paid for by the workers through taxes. They have kept their principles and gotten away from the numbers!

  68. G.... P....

Most people I see calling themselves “Working Class” are fat-arses too unimaginative to shift from the burgers and couch and do a bit of graft, claiming the right to inherit state houses from their mums. State houses, mind you, paid for by the workers through employment taxes.

  69. w.... ....

@thekosmos7 OK, fair point, maybe I didn't get my point across as intended. Weller certainly forgot his roots . Ironic really after Eton Rifles, both him and Foxton send their kids to private schools and to really rub salt in the wounds Foxtons lad actually went to Eton.
I believe thats probably the biggest differance between southerners and northerners in England. The southerners don't have a problem sweeping their past under the carpet, northerners are more loyal to their roots I think?

  70. t.... ....

@walshy2866 Sorry mate, but don't think Weller fits into middle class bracket in the slightest..his dad was a cab-driver and builder, very working-class..Yes, Woking (Weller's hometown) is home counties, but lots of working class people live there. Not trying to defend Weller at all cos I've met him couple of times and he was a moody git..dissappointing after years of idolising him..Never meet your heroes!

  71. J.... H....

just got this album yesyterday :)

  72. w.... ....

Classic track, possibily my favourite Jam track. Do like "To Be Someone" though

Weller was good and at such a young age, but he was not all his image portrayed, as a working class hero fighting the system of the late 70's.
He was from a middle class Home Counties family.

Bruce Foxton was always my prefered member of the band, very under-rated and still going strong.

  73. s.... ....

Theres so much much more to The Jam than Eton Rifles , Going undergroound and all the hits, In The City and Modern World are fucking brilliant albums

  74. j.... ....

@darksideofchris keep trying she will come around mate!

  75. j.... ....

Possibly one of the best songs ever written ! thanks for the post!

  76. G.... B....

Awesome tune.. just as good as ever.. and never will change..! ;)

  77. C.... E....

    yeah love The Jam

  78. P.... ....

    One of their best numbers!

  79. p.... ....

this is the song to be played at my funeral ... Ill still be kickin mind!

  80. 6.... ....

    @prunch72 Amen !!!

  81. B.... J....

I was in college when this came out and was the first person in my town to buy it and play it...I played The Jam 24/7 every freaking day! I loved and lived this music..Everyone i played it for bought it and anything The Jam put out...Considering this was in the southern USA ..was awesome....

  82. e.... ....

reality is so hard... the jam 4ever

  83. V.... R....

No tribute, or covers, or half a..... band can ever re-create this, a moment in time still relevent. I missed the hay day of The Jam by a few years but i had older brothers who meticulously collected Jam releases and press cuttings. What a song writer and lyricists! How old was Weller when he wrote this, 18? I remember school lunch hour driving back on my Vespa, change books and stick a few Jam singles on the turntable just to keep the fire burning, we did'nt just listen to it, we lived it!

  84. t.... ....

    Great song!

  85. G.... ....

just as fresh now as it was 32 years ago.....superb

  86. R.... ....

"then I found that I was really the same,
so this link's breaking away from the chain!!"
    KILLLLLER lyrics! Mod as F*ck!!

  87. N.... R....

I can still remember the day this album came out! God! I wish music was still that important to me!

  88. 1.... ....

This song is a flat-out masterpiece.

  89. L.... R....

The jam pretty much kick all ass.

  90. S.... ....

Sounds like Weller wanting to escape the drearyness of everyday life and get out there.

    Great tune.
