Jackson Browne - The Painter Lyrics
We see him dancing in the morning
Stars depart the yawning sky
He'll take the hour that is passing
And leave it in his lover's eye
And if you want he'll make it seem
A mystic sea
We hear him laughing in the shadows
As he smuggles in the sand
He's found another kind of color
In the magic he has donned
And if you want he'll take the time
To ask the sun and moon to rhyme
And then combine
He draws no lines between what he's imagining

Jackson Browne The Painter Comments
This is us.
Same Mike.
I remember this song from when I was a teenager, but when I heard this song on the radio recently, this song brought tears to my eyes, because the words describe my life and struggles today! Especially, "Caught between the longing for Love and the legal tender"
It was time to revisit Jackson and his creativity...what a fkn talent...so many stories to tell!
Hard to believe that he wrote this when he was 27. There is a lifetime of wisdom and pathos in it👍
What a voice!
One of Andy's favorite shirts was a Jackson Browne shirt he got at a concert. Thanks, Jackson.
This song still gives me chills.
Is there a better version of this song anywhere? Love this!
red headed lady reaching for an apple. left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot
A left hander must be good!!!!,
I didn't realize Vonda Shepard sang with Jackson until I heard this great song. As soon as I heard the wail after the 3rd verse, I knew the voice. He always gets amazing backup singers and musicians!
I'm crazy about this song and all of JB's songs have this precious quality. <3
Love this man! xx
Is that Joni Mitchell?
Whole Lotta Rosie will always be his best song even though he didn't sing it.
'm gonna be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender
Where the ads take aim and lay their claim
To the heart and the soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy
Musicians tried to warn us through their music! Look at us now 40 years later!
4:35 "Say a prayer 4 the Pretender, who started out so young & strong only to surrender"
PURE POETRY - the longer you live - the more meaningful that line! LOL
How I wish they still made great songs like this.
BUILD THE WALL!
Save the gaolle basin and the great barrier reef get on world to stop adani
Get over Jackson and save the the great barrier reef stop adani
He's right. 63 years feels like the wink of an eye. A few more won't change that.
Listen all you wishers for tomorrow. This balladeer has got it right. I love listening to the perfect match of music and lyrics. Sweet and meaningful. I could stay all night and listen.
I have been listening to this song for so long, was never going to be the pretender, but here I am at 56 thinking I might be the pretender!!
Hmmm? I though this song was written and performed by a guy named Clayton J. Browne....No, I'm sure of it...
My beautiful husband introduced me to Jackson Browne in 1979

I saw Jackson Browne at the Kravis Center in WPB FL in April 2019. Can’t stop listening to him. So talented and handsome. Loving the lyrics. Thank you.
Lessons learned throughout life: bad (even very bad) people can bring art and beauty into our lives.
What happened to great songs??
So many memories. I was 16 and in love. My husband worked grave yard so I would stay up all night and draw and do artwork at the kitchen table. I always listened to Jackson Browne while I did my drawings, he or James Taylor. I found I did my best stuff listening to Browne. I stayed up all night waiting for my husband to come so we could then sleep together and be on the same routine/pattern. He died 3 years ago, we were together 41 years. He took me to my first concert, and it was Jackson Browne at Freeborn Hall at UC Davis. Thanks Jackson Browne for being there at the best time in my life.
Your comment brought a tear to my eye. I too lost my first wife a couple years ago and we listen to Jackson Browne for years! Have since remarried but still that song carved a place in my heart that no one else could fill. Stay safe and God bless

...."...and the ships, bearing their dreams, sail out of sight..."....
..Oh, Jackson !!!... (poet much ?)...
Probably the greatest American singer/songwriter of the 1970’s.
Yeaaa...
In answering the question of who The Pretender is, Browne said - "...it's not me exactly, although sometimes people applaud for me at that moment in the song as if I am, but in truth there is a bit of The Pretender in me, but it's anybody that's sort of lost sight of some of their dreams...and is going through the motions and trying to make a stab at a certain way of life that he sees other people succeeding at. So maybe it's a lot of people of a certain generation who sort of embraced a very material lifestyle in place of dreams that they had that sort of disintegrated at some point."
Hey dude, been lissnin2ya 4 over40yrs.Thank u ,your music kept me in touch with gravity a few times [email protected]

A poet and performer. Words and melody are more powerful together than by themselves. Each of us together can be, too.

This is my favorite! What an inspiration of reflection.
As relevant today as it was 40+ years ago.
