Jackson Browne - The Fairest Of The Seasons Lyrics

Now that it's time
Now that the hour hand has landed at the end
Now that it's real
Now that the dreams have given all they had to lend
I want to know
Do I stay or do I go
And maybe try another time
And do I really have a hand in my forgetting

Now that I've tried
Now that I've finally found that this is not the way
Now that I turn
Now that I feel it's time to spend the night away
I want to know
Do I stay or do I go
And maybe finally split the rind
And do I really understand the undernetting

Yes and the morning has me looking in your eyes and seeing mine
Warning me to read the signs carefully

Now that it's love
Now that the candle's falling smaller in my mind
Now that it's here
Now that I'm almost not so very far behind
I want to know
Do I stay or do I go
And maybe fall another side
And do I really have a sound that I can ride on

Now that I can
Now that it's easy ever easy all around
Now that I'm near
Now that I'm falling to the sunlights and to song
I want to know
Do I stay or do I go
And do I have to do just one
And can I choose again if I should lose the reason

Yes and the morning has me looking in your eyes and seeing mine
Warning me to read the signs oh carefully

Now that I smile
Now that I'm laughing even deeper in the side
Now that I see
Now that I finally found the one thing I denied
I want to know
Do I stay or do I go
And it is finally I decide
That I'll be leaving in the fairest of the seasons

Jackson Browne The Fairest Of The Seasons Comments

God this is a an awful. Nico did it best despite the song being written by Jackson Browne

    J.... R....

+Joe Rodriguez. A friend and upper classmate named Gregg Copeland wrote the lyrics and Jackson put it to music. What you are hearing is an early Nina Demo from 1967 at age 18 - 19 , while Jackson was still learning to sing. Jackson had a writers contract at age 16 . The purpose of the demos was to put it out there to introduce singers and producers to his songs . Jackson started out as a writer only , with his songs being recorded by many different artists at the time. There is another set of demos by Criterion. If you search YT for "The Fairest of the Seasons " , you will find many beautiful versions. Try these : Trespassers William , Laurena Segura , Pau de Mat , and Roy Hamanato to name a few.

Jackson wrote this during the period where he idolized Tim Buckley - and I really do think he's trying to sound like him here... not entirely successfully of course :D

@Stargazer Interesting you say this because the source I quoted from explicitly refers to Jackson as being 16. I'm not sure why they would have made him younger than he really was. But I looked it up and the Velvets didn't even exist when he was 16, so... :D I just don't get why they would have shaved 2 years off his age. But yes, thank you for the information.

@Mark T I have an idea about how this kind of disinformation happens. First let me say that I have checked several sources , just to be sure. The Velvet Underground formed in 1964, the same year that Jackson Browne at age 16 wrote “These Days”, but he did not team up with Nico till 1967 when he was 18. I have seen that some people erroneously think that because Jackson wrote “These Days” when he was 16 and Nico recorded it on Chelsea Girl with him playing guitar (1967) that he was 16 when he was with her - - - and that he wrote it for her, which is just not true. He didn’t know her till 2 1/2 years later. Chelsea Girl also included two other early songs by Jackson ; this one “The Fairest of the Seasons’ and “Somewhere There’s a Feather”. I have seen it several times that Jackson wrote “These Days” for Nico when he would have been 16 and did not know her. Also. I might add that I have read many things everywhere and anywhere that are not true or at the very least questionable.

@Stargazer You raise a good point. And sometimes, the subject of the speculation doesn't help matters themselves - for example, Nico listed her birth year and ethnicity wildly differently depending on who was asking (the earliest and latest dates I saw were 8 years apart)...

    M.... T....

@Mark T Very funny. And by the way , I just realized after reviewing other comments, that some of the disinformation that I mentioned is on this very sight , which I tried to correct a long time ago. I think i’ve worn this subject out or it’s worn me out. Good to know you. Stargazer.

@Stargazer You too :) Thank you for helping clear things up for everyone.

+guilherme b. Words by Gregg Copland. Music by Jackson Browne. Sung by a very young Jackson Browne. There are several other really interesting versions on YT. Gregg Copeland was the high school poet laureate and an inspiration to Jackson at the time. You know, reading over the lyrics, I see some resemblance to " Late for the Sky ", in terms of the meaning.

  4. S.... ....

Ivana. There is some information that needs to be corrected here. Jackson Browne wrote this song somewhere between the ages 15 and 17 with a high school classmate named Greg Copeland. Greg was possibly 2 years older and possibly out of school. This was long before he met Nico in New York City. Also, "These Days" was written while in high school at age 16, not age 18 with Nico. Jackson actually had a publishing contract around age 16 and many people recorded his songs . It was many years later by his own choice that he had a recording contract

    S.... ....

    You are correct

    S.... ....

+ Penny Miller. Thank you for your confirmation. When I see information that is so far " off the tracks", I feel the need to correct it.

    S.... ....

Stargazer thanks for sharing your knowledge! I just wanted to share this beautiful version in YouTube, it was a shame that most people didn't know it. Anyway, «off the track» always seems to be the road I tend to take! 🤗

    S.... ....

@Ivana Gamarnik . Thanks for sharing. This song is truly lovely and I hope people will seek out all the other beautiful versions on Youtube. But for you, probably no one would know it, unless they are into Jackson’s demos. Thanks.

  5. R.... ....

    from the Banana LP

    R.... ....

Raymantico wrong. It’s from Nico’s debut album

  6. H.... L....

Hi, can you tell me from what album is this from? Chers. o/

    H.... L....

The "Nina Music Demos" from 1967

  7. D.... L....

Royal Tenenbaums brought me here. I was already a fan of Jackson's. I was front row at his solo show at Interlochen several years ago...

  8. j.... c....

I'm actually fairly new to the internetz...I've been wondering about his version of this for some time. Thanks for posting it. Great song.

    j.... c....

+ john cutler. A few years late , but here goes. Jackson Browne’s high school friend Gregg Copeland wrote this song and Jackson wrote the music . He only recorded it on a demo to introduce it to other artists and producers . Jackson had a writers contract at 16 and several artists have recorded this song . Youtube it and you will find several beautiful versions by other artists . Hope this helps if not too late.

  9. G.... C....

Good rendition, but Jackson Browne? Doesn't sound like him - more like Nico with a cold.

    G.... C....

ha! lovely nico always sounded like with a cold. it's actually browne singing, he wrote that song for her together with "these days" when they were dating :)

    G.... C....

+H. Sapiens Sapiens It's definitely Browne... from a collection of demos—which includes a guitar version of Birds of St. Marks—that have been floating around for years.

    G.... C....

    +czarkhasm
I agree it definitely is Browne, I forgot to delete my comment when I realized it was indeed Jackson haha

    G.... C....

@Ivana Gamarnik. Not true . Read other comments.
