Jackson Browne - My Opening Farewell Lyrics
A lady stands before an open window
Staring so far away
She can almost feel the southern wind blow
Almost touching her restless day
Sad smile her apology
Sad eyes reaching to the door
Daylight loses to another evening
And still she spares me the word goodbye
And sits alone beside me fighting her feelings
Struggles to speak but in the end can only cry
Suddenly its so hard to find
The sound of the words to speak her troubled mind
There's a train everyday leaving either way
There's a world, you know
There's a way to go
And you'll soon be gone - that's just as well
This is my opening farewell
A child's drawings left there on the table
And a woman's silk lying on the floor
And I would keep them here if I were able
Lock her safe behind this open door
But suddenly it's so clear to me
That I'd asked her to see what she may never see
And now my kind words find their way back to me
There's a train everyday leaving either way
There's a world, you know
You got a way's to go
And I'll soon believe - it's just as well
This is my opening farewell

Jackson Browne My Opening Farewell Comments
Best poet ever 🌹
Sad but beautiful
Most of the time when you hear this phrase “ My opening . . . . “ , it means “ My opening remarks” , as in something that is ahead in the very near future as you are reading something or hearing it in a speech for you to understand. But in this case, Jackson brilliantly turns to the word " farewell” as in “goodbye”, not as something looking forward, but nevertheless something positive. “This is my opening farewell."
One of the most poignant songs ever about leaving a loving relationship but for the end, and how it could be a positive in the end. Very wise for such a young man. “ There’s a train everyday / leaving either way / There’s a World You Know / There’s a way to go “.
Excellent discript.
@eastcane Thank you. Every line in this song is a gem, as in almost all of Jackson Browne’s early songs. As an example in this song :
"Daylight loses to another evening
and still she spares me the words goodbye”.
And one of my favorites in this song is :
“There’s a train every day / leaving either way / There’s a world you know / There’s a way to go."
Heartbreaking but optimistic.
Heartbreaking
Great song writer and singer!
Man is his voice so sexy! The way it breaks here and there as he's singing some poignant lyric. I get the chills!
+ Mel Bee. An example is at around 3:57 : “And I’ll soon believe it’s just as well."
