Jackie Wilson - My Yiddishe Momme Lyrics

My yiddishe momme I need her more then ever now
My yiddishe momme I'd like to kiss that wrinkled brow
I long to hold her hands once more as in days gone by
And ask her to forgive me for things I did that made her cry

How few were her pleasures, she never cared for fashion's styles
Her jewels and treasures she found them in her baby's smiles
Oh I know that I owe what I am today
To that dear little lady so old and gray
To that wonderful yiddishe momme of mine

At the start of the song I thought he had eaten something that didn't agree with him. It actually put me off. For me he over sings the song. It is uncomfortable listening. Usually I love Jackie Wilson songs. This version is not for my taste at all.

Wow - he knew how to sing this song, that's for sure. Wilson converted to Judaism as an adult - I wonder if he felt his Jewish soul as a young person, or only later in life when he calmed down.

    j.... b....

Indeed, Jackie was a Spiritual Man... his friend Sammy Davis Jr. had a huge
influence on Him, as Sammy too was a Convert... wishing you a good evening..
He sounded rather Cantorial to Me, especially in the very beginning of the song!

    j.... b....

Thanks! You're right, Jackie sounds VERY cantorial! I was trippin' that he sounded like he could step in over at Temple Beth Sholom and no one would suspect he WASN'T a cantor, lol

I had the original LP called "You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet". Lost all my old albums.....so thanks for the post. I'll be including this in my "impressionist" show on June 2 at a (are you ready?) Jewish Synagogue! (In Poway California)

  24. C.... ....

Jackie may not have had a Yiddishe Momme, but Mrs. Wilson had a Jewish son. Jackie was a convert to Judaism. This was from Jackie's tribute to Al Jolson, whom he described as "the greatest entertainer of this or any other era, and the one man I admire most in this business." Originally this was issued on CD as part of a double album, paired strangely with Xmas songs. Today it is available by itself as a CD of 12 Jolson songs.

    C.... ....

CarlDuke a dam Jackie could sing anything!

    C.... ....

THAT TRIBUTE IS ALSO ON THE LP.

  25. D.... L....

Mama... today is twenty five years, how I would love to hold your
hand once more... as in day's gone by... this is for You, 7-28-'12
Rest In Peace, miss and need you every day, my heart aches~ Mx

  26. A.... l....

the Cantorial is amazing...he could sing anything...I heard there were songwriters who used to try to to stump Jackie by writing songs they didn't think he could sing, but he always could....although this is not the ususual fare I'd expect from JW, the more I listen to him, the more I realize there is no usual about Jackie..say it again...so versatile

  27. D.... L....

@coolie60 Thanks for the lovely comment and I must agree, M x

  28. L.... L....

À gréât version ,such à gréât voice even Al Jolson would be pround of him

  31. D.... L....

@ruthy102 Hi, thanks for the nice comment, and I certainly agree-
    take care, Marcie* xxx

  32. M.... ....

@CarlDuke Hi there, yes Jackie had a
truly wonderful Mama, I had the pleasure
of meeting her... they were very close, she
adored him... I can't comment on the rest,
but, yes many have covered this song- I
love this version, and some of the others.
Tom Jones, and Connie Francis are also
great renditions... Best to you, Marcie

  33. C.... ....

Dee, thanks so much for posting this. I was reading something recently that Jackie actually converted to Judaism some time around 1965. So while Jackie did not have a Yiddishe Momme, I guess one could say Mrs. Wilson had a Yiddishe son. I agree that at moments he is quite Cantorial. There are a couple of other fine versions of this song on youtube by Sophie Tucker, Connie Francis and very surprisingly Patti Page.

  34. D.... L....

Thanks for the lovely comment Dear Kay!!!
    Best, Marcie

  35. D.... L....

I agree, a great voice- I just wanted to share this song with the YouTubers, with
JW singing, another side to his many
talented singing styles!! My best to you &
David... Many thanks, Marcie & Dee xxx

  36. D.... ....

Wow - what a voice ! I've never heard this from Jackie - thank you for sharing.
Blessed holidays to you. Hugs.... Toni

  37. D.... L....

Mike, thanks for the nice comment- glad
you like it. Was that YOU I heard, singing
while that fire truck was just coming down
the street... I thought so, but please- they
need you to put out the fire... So do take
care, you have me laughing my *** off and
Dee too. What a great guy- we Luv You!!
    Best , M*
