Jack Off Jill - Strawberry Gashes Lyrics

Turn her over
A candle is lit, I see through her
Blow it out and save all her ashes for me

Curse me sold her
The poison that runs it's course through her
Pale white skin with strawberry gashes all over all over

Watch me fault her
You're living like a disaster
She said kill me faster
with strawberry gashes all over

Called her over
and asked her if she was improving
She said "feels fine" it's wonderful wonderful here

Hex me told her
I dreamt of a devil that knew her
Pale white skin with strawberry gashes all over all over

Watch me fault her
You're living like a disaster
She said kill me faster
with strawberry gashes all over

I lay quiet
waiting for her voice to say
"Some things you lose and some things you just give away"

Scold me failed her
If only I'd held on tighter to her
Pale white skin that twisted and withered away from me away from me

Watch me lose her
It's almost like losing myself
Give her my soul
and let them take somebody else get away from me

Watch me fault her
You're living like a disaster
She said kill me faster
with strawberry gashes all over all over me

This song will always hold a perversely special place in my heart. I know given my profile picture I look like the last person who would listen to this, but please listen to my story.

Back in 2004 as a 16 year old sophomore in high school, my jeans were black, my belt was black and studded, and my shirt was the cover of Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. My black Invader Zim sweatband covered my wrists from my parents and the rest of the world.

I was dating a girl who dressed like a gothic Lolita and I'd always hear her singing this song. I never heard the song itself, just her voice. She personified the lyrics, having pale white skin (I'm a sucker for Irish girls) and strawberry gashes all over. I'll never forget one deep one she explained as "my skin opened up like a zipper". When she broke up with me in December of that year, I did what any impulsive and impetuous teenager would do and swallowed 400 aspirin in an attempt to kill myself.

I was removed from high school, and she and I didn't see each other again. For years I kept trying to muster up the courage to listen to this song and I just couldn't. I'd nearly get physically sick whenever I'd try, my heart rate would jack through the roof and I'd start to panic. Some time around 2007, I felt enough time had passed and got to hear it for the first time. The scars on my wrists from high school had faded, and I had packed away the gothic attire, but boy I could practically smell the old high school when I heard it!

(Little did I know, from 2008 to 2012 I'd do another 180 and become a complete and total stoner to the extreme before finally going back to school in 2012 and just receiving my finance degree this past May, but that's a tale for another time.) That girl found me on Facebook some time in 2011 and we dated again from 2011 to 2014. While she left me again and I'm man enough to admit I was absolutely shattered, I learned from my past. I've chosen to abstain from dating since, but every time I hear this song it takes me back to 2004. I smile remembering the people we both used to be and am amazed that a preppy finance peacock came out of all that. I haven't spoken to her since she left me, but I'd wish her well.

To those who struggle with self-harm, I promise you it gets better. I used to cut myself, the girl I dated in high school used to cut herself. There was something about 2004 where the gothic subculture and self-harm just swept through high schools. What you're going through isn't new, but it is new to you. I hope you can hold on, because as a 30 year old man, I can say that life will blossom for you in ways you never imagined. Those strawberry gashes will turn to faint white lines of a former life and you'll be a happy and well-adjusted adult. I know I am.

If you're interested in hearing my story out loud, you can go find Wiretap S9E25, "It's All Been Done". She and I are featured back when we were in a relationship talking about our time in high school.

  19. Emily Stephens

I've known this song for years, and loved it for reasons I never knew...
Now as a 29 year old mom/ step mom with a daughter who cuts it means sooooooo much more. It's like I'm hearing it for the first time...

"Poison that runs it's course through her"

  45. pniesandfenb

Listen all you retards in the cement section, you do realise that this can be interpreted In two different ways? one being about drugs and overdosing and the other about cutting. In the dictionary, Strawberry gashes refers to both needle marks and cuts so, yeah.

  46. Big Ronnie

A brilliant song about addiction and suicide.

    I lay quiet
waiting for her voice to say
"Some things you lose and some things you just give away"

    Pure poetry

  47. BBdoes things

if you go on urban dictionary it says "strawberry gashes means cutting thats why its used in jack off jills song strawberry gashes "

  48. FinnStewart

why can't this just be about both self harm and heroin? someone can suffer with both addictions at the same time y'know.

  49. saint james

this song is whatever you want it to be about, which is the greatest thing about music. just enjoy it.

  50. alisande

  60. Salem Bitch

Yep, still makes me bawl in tears.

  61. Drakila 94

I know "strawberry gashes" can refer to the red marks you get when you use needles. But it can also refer to the wounds when you cut your wrists. I'm not sure which one it's refering to.

    Meow

Drakila 94 Self-inflected wounds. Not needles.

    Amerikajin91

pretty sure its Heroin "sold her the poison that runs its course through her"

    Dark Fire

It is both. "Sold her to the poison that runs its course through her" is Heroin, "called her over and asked if she was improving" meant the suicide and depression the girl was going through; to see if she was mentally better. "Strawberry Gashes" meant the cuts all over her body. And it is also possible that she was cutting herself to make her suicide quicker since Heroin can take a while to kill you fully IF you were taking small-medium amounts. Cutting yourself can kill you, even if you cut a little bit. So if you mix up a mentally unstable girl with drugs and self harm problems, you got a 100% death rate. Uneven mental state + cutting = 20% death rate. Unstable mental state + drugs = 80% death rate. Cutting + drugs = 85% death rate. So if you mix up all three, death is going to happen, period. You can avoid 2 with help, and you can treat the mental state, but there is no perfect cure for all 3. However, you can help everyone you know or dont know that has to face any/all of these.

    Neko Wafers

Your reply is fucking awesome. With everyone, it's always one or the other, but you proved it to be *both*

When I first listened to the song, I actually thought it was about.. Mutilation, murder, and torture.. And I was honestly a little surprised to find out it was about heroin.. But also a bit disappointed.. But with everyone in the comments, people say it either suicide, or drugs.. But I realy like your theory better.. Like, yeah, it does make a really damn good murder song, but it's also a pretty deep song that talks about suicide and drugs..

Thinking about the song in both ways just makes it an amazing song.. Like, how often does a song have more than *three* alternative stories/theories to it?

    Twilight Reaper

@Neko Wafers No?? Strawberry gash is literally a term for where you've shot up drugs. The little pin prick spot is a "strawberry gash"
Its literally been stated she wrote this about her friend who ODed on heroin and how she feels responsible

  62. Ana Carolina Serrao

This song makes me cry inside and glad to feel sad. 😟

+Jayden Hannah as a user i can tell you that alot of heroin addicts use candles to cook their dope because it saves on lighter fluid you would be surprised how fast you go through a lighter esp if there is several ppl in the house cooking dope with the same lighter

  80. Laila & Gigi

yall fighting about what this song is about can stop now. songs dont have a solid meaning (unless the artists state otherwise) and thats what songs are about. many people can interpret songs in different ways and mold it to what it means to them.

Like listening to this all I can picture is a girl lying in fetus position on the floor crying, with blades, needles, and pill bottles around her.

    manga4774

    whoa me too

    Austin Smith

Certified Pancake Dealer Please do not assume a woman resting in the vicinity of pill bottles and blades while crying means anything is wrong. It is perfectly possible she slipped and fell at a walgreens and knocked over some pill bottles and razor blades and was crying over falling.

    rotten doll

I did a drawing of that inspired by the song
