J. Geils Band, The - Flamethrower Lyrics

All day long she holds it back
Back with all her might
She carries a burnin' torch inside
She holds it firm and tight
She punches out the clock
While it keeps punchin' out her life
She's a flamethrower, red-hot glower
Flamethrower at night

The things she wears to work
They hang off her kinda loose
Her blouse don't fit, the pants ain't right
She ain't no front page news
But when her work is done
And the daytime turns to night
The headlines flash in neon
That the girl has taken flight

Chairman of the board
Won't look her in the eye
The fire of her vision
His money just can't buy
Silently she waits
Silently she contemplates
She can make 'em tremble
You know the reason why

She's a flame - flamethrower
She's a flamethrower at night
She's a flame - a red-hot glower
She's a flamethrower at night

You might think you're burnin'
All your candles at both ends
Maybe you should go to church
To make up some amends
But if you think you're fireproof
So cool and much too much
Don't dare go near my baby
'Cause she'll melt you with her touch

I forget the darkness
I forget the pain
When she's movin' through my heart
And when she's pumpin' through my veins
She's the part inside me
I never can control
And she's the only reason
I know I've got a soul

She's a flame - flamethrower
She's a flamethrower at night
She's a flame - a red-hot glower
She's a flamethrower at night

I had this album...yes, album (vinyl) when I was 11 or 12 years old. Centerfold and Freeze Frame were the two big hits, but I always loved this song. I've never seen an original video for it. This video is from "Come Back" off the Love Stinks album, obviously without all the other footage dubbed in, but is still pretty damn good

  35. E.... N....

Christopher Miller I knew my Detroit people would be in the house. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 #thescene

Nowadays it would be considered "cultural appropriation." :/

    D.... 7....

Yeah.. Black Radio played songs by J. Giels Band, YES!, The Romantics and Hall and Oates in this era.

Also during this era MTV initially considered Michael Jackson "Thriller" too urban. Also the Black Rock Band Living Colour got odd looks from so-called Rock Fans claiming they were Culture Vultures.

Really... Black Folks invented Rock Music so it's hard to steal from yourself.

Just food for thought when attempting to understand America.

    D.... 7....

  38. M.... F....

Hate to say it,but thought this was by The Barkays or Cameo or Lakeside or Confunksion or any 80s black R&B group..Blue eyed soul, from fuckin Boston too..nice😎✌️

    M.... F....

When they gigged in the Motor City, they were called Detroit's favorite party band.
Like Kiss and Aerosmith, they East Coast paid homage to the Big "D"!

  39. J.... P....

Thanks Freaks and Geeks for helping me remember this song!

    J.... P....

Wasn't that such a great show!!
I'm watching it now in fact lol! That scene Sam did to this song was the best!! What's even funnier...
I was 9 when this came out, and the kid who played Sam wasn't even born when this came out lol!

  40. B.... ....

80's when musicians actually played instruments instead of computer enhanced dreck

    J.... H....

Irony. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Electrifying_Mojo played for J. Geils on this track. He helped define techno as a sound, meaning this song is on the turning point between rock and "new wave"/everything that came after.
Trying to hold on to a specific sound of the past is pointless, as the people responsible for it will move on to other things, or die. Even the technology used to create it eventually becomes impossible to find, and can only be emulated or sampled - by computers.
Genres do experience revivals, though... so if you can get past the subconscious fear of aging that may be the real reason behind your distaste of new genres that don't use analog instruments, maybe you'd be able to enjoy something new for a change?

    J.... H....

Joseph Hickman AMEN!!! NOTHING FAKE ABOUT IT

    J.... H....

    @Wolfin
I have often said this about music... The actual "sound" of analog instruments (played in real time) has become dated. Due to the inconsistency in the rhythms and the overall "sound" of for example electric bass...along with the appreciation of the years and years of practice it takes a human to get to certain levels of musicianship is just no longer appreciated or sought after.
There are definitely new songs that are not played with instruments that sound good, ...when those songs are played "live" with instruments though, is there a "loss" of the newer art due to it being performed on outdated equipment, analog instruments and by musicians?
If not, why aren't there more people using analog instruments to record?

Are analog instruments actually a "technology" that is becoming hard to find or is the art and discipline of "playing" music with "musicians" is just no longer appreciated?
If the overall goal is the song itself and what sounds good, new technology does have the advantage. ..and contrary to popular belief, programming synths and drum machines is NOT something that "anybody" can do. There is a talent and skill that is developed over time as well.

I just never thought of the 'idea' of playing an analog instrument being a "technology' in and of itself. Acoustic Drums vs Electronic Drums....You still have to hit them with sticks and the same rudiments you learn for the acoustic set are pretty much the same as what you would use with the electronics.
Drum Programming with a drum machine or drum software though does not require the level of physical skills in order to produce a nice sounding drumbeat. You still need a working knowledge of rhythms to do programming...so again, it is an art.
Most people don't play Harpsichords any longer but the keyboard of a harpsichord is is exactly the same as a piano, organ, etc.. The same basic skills of "keyboarding" are still needed.
Programming software to play a sample of a harpischord is NOT something that you need the same skillset as a pianist or any other analog keyboardist. You need a skillset but not that same.

There is a definite lack of appreciation for music made with machines from older people.

    J.... H....

Professional musician here. The 80s are when "computer enhanced dreck" was invented.
THIS SONG that we're commenting on even has computers and synthesizers all over it. Lmfaoooooo

"Ahhh.. the early 1860s - when America was actually peaceful."
"Remember the good old 1940s - when Europeans were living in harmony with each other?"
"I sure miss the late 20s and early 30s - when the stock market was booming and everyone had stable employment."
"Why can't we go back to the early 1900s -when blacks were treated as equals?"

    J.... H....

Blame the education system for getting rid of music programs and musicians for not reaching back/out.
