Guitarist J. Geils, bassist Danny Klein, and harpist Magic Dick began performing as an acoustic blues trio sometime in the mid-'60s. In 1967, drummer Stephen Jo Bladd and vocalist Peter Wolf joined the group, and the band went electric. Before joining the J. Geils Band, Bladd and Wolf played together in the Boston-based rock revivalist band the Hallucinations. Both musicians shared a love of arcane doo wop, blues, R&B, and rock & roll.

First, that is not martha quinn that is a urban legend. This was filmed at a former school that was also being used as a dance school. That is where most of the girls came from, but not all. Interesting. I read in Wikipedia that the song is based on Peter Wolf’s real life past relationship with a former model named Angel. I wonder why I didn’t figure it out sooner!

A big hit here in Australia and I remember it well. I was in my first year of high school and this was getting a lot of airplay. Good times and great memories, I wish I could go back but sadly those days will never return. RIP John J. Geils and thank you for the wonderful music.

Thanks to The J. Geils Band for such an entertaining Pop Music video from around 1980-81. The women school students doing their dance choreography with vocalist Peter Wolf is really funny, and the final seconds of the cheerleader doing her split legs jump and the other cheerleaders doing their one-by-one cartwheels is so funny.

Why "Centerfold" is borderline stalkerish
The man in the song is looking through some adult magazines, he opens up the centerfold and stares in pure horror as his highschool crush, whom he refers to as his "angel" the one who he saw as a symbol of purity, is now fully displayed in a dirty magazine. The fluffy sweater that he remembers her wearing is now replaced by sexy lingerie.
He remembers how perfect and innocent she was.
He goes back and forth between his (now tarnished) memory, and the harsh reality that lays in front of him. He is completely heartbroken.
He decides to forgive her as he understands "this ain't no never,-never land." Then continues with the idea that once all this has died down he will have a chance to make her his angel again. He will see her with her clothes on in public- the way he believes it should be. Then go some place to "take them off in private" as her body should be his, and his only.
Then of course he ends up buying the magazine.
